SA also adds things like fire retardant inner linings etc... more important
in a track car.

Another thing to consider is weight... not much sure if it adds up in an
auto-x, but from my road-racing days, a lighter helmet is a really good
thing. "Cheaper" helmets are usually heavier. You should also look at the
ventilation. On a hot day, a well ventilated helmet makes a big difference.

But honestly different brands fit differently... you have to try a few on
and see what feels right.

Yup... a good quote from the site's FAQ

What are the differences between the SA and M standards?
SA Standard was designed for auto racing while M Standard was for
motorcycling and other motorsports. There are three major differences
between them:
1. SA standard requires flammability test while the M standard does not;
2. SA standard allows narrower visual field than M standard (Some SA helmets
may not be street legal);
3. SA standard has rollbar impact test while M standard does not.
The "narrower visual field" is important in an open wheel car, but not if
you are in anything with a windshield.

Ben,

Personally I think this is just another example of legislative bloat...... but

if they're going to do it I hope the legislation or planned legislation will
include other potential run flat "systems" such as the bands that keep a
flattend tire from rolling off the rim and not just some monitoring systems as
possible solutions.... Michelin????

Subject: Re: [uuc] radar detectors

If you are into gadgets, and are not looking to spend $450 on the V1, PNI
makes a pretty neat radar/laser detector with all the bells and whistles
(anti VG2 etc...), plus it has a full digital compass readout (cardinal
points [NW, S, SE etc.] and numeric). I had been trying to get the compass
mirror for the euro-E36 M3 sold by BMW Individual but have been
unsuccessful -- so this detector with built in compass fits the bill, and
has proven to be quite good as a radar detector (as sensitive as anything
I've owned from passport/escort anyway).

http://www.pnicorp.com/pni-products-list.html

They have another model that has both a compass & altimeter built in, but I
hear the altimeter uses a barametric pressure based altitude sensor that
could easily get thrown out of whack by simply opening the window, or
driving through rapidly changing weather.

At any rate, I got mine for $150 and hard wired it into my E36 M3 off the
map light, the same place most uuc'ers wire their V1's.

This is no V1, but is fine for my purposes (a good detector is just one of
several tools you need to prevent speeding tickets, the number one being
common sense, followed by visual cues, etc...)

Have fun out there.

The integrated systems will use the same receiver as the remote lock
control. The systems that rely on the ABS sensors can only discriminate a
nearly flat tire.

Run flat tires will get inflation monitors first because a flat is not
obvious to the driver.

A V8 Z3 (or was it a V12) has already been built,
albeit by one of the German specialists, possibly
Hamann. I remember one reviewer said it handled
dreadfully, but who cared when it went that fast in a
straight line. The aluminium V8, though shorter and
not a lot heavier than the Motorsport iron block 6 all
up, was plainly not intended for that bodyshell and
the installation resulted in a strange handling
imbalance. (Alpina's V8 3 series largely escaped this
criticism, however.) Shoehorning big, heavy engines
into small bodies will always come at the price of
handling delicacy, and BMW will doubtless have a
problem with that. Roll on titanium engine blocks.

E30 M3s resurrectionists (of which I am one) will be
glad to hear that BMW has confirmed a "hot four"
Valvetronic version with ~200 bhp. But I believe the
Valvetronic engines are limited somewhat in revs by
the throttle replacement mechanism, which probably
means no 8000+ rpm antics. And to cope with the extra
weight and the inevitable balance shafts, I wouldn't
be surprised to see a capacity of 2.3 or even 2.4
litres.

Subject: [uuc] <MT TV> Z06 vs M3 vs Boxster S

Any of you guys with Speedvision catch this show??

They put a Corvette Z06 against a Boxster S and an E46 M3 through a few
tests. From what I can remember, 0-60, 0-100, 0-100-0, 60-0 & 100-0,
600 ft slalom, road course lap time. I don't know what road course
that was, looked like Cali? I'm taking a big guess and saying Streets
of Willow. Someone know for sure?

Anyhow the Corvette pretty much won every category, it beat the M3 by
about 5ft in the 60-0, about 20ft in the 100-0, about 2 seconds in the
0-100, tied the M3 at about 68mph thru the slalom and was 1 second
faster than the M3 around the road course (59.50 vs 1:00.50). Or
something close to that. The Boxster S was behind both the M3 & Vette
in almost every category I didn't catch the 0-60 which is perhaps where
it didn't loose.

Nevertheless they declared the M3 the unanimous winner in this
"performance" test, although the Vette won 5 categories and tied in 1.
Must be that the M3 has that back seat huh? ;-) or else GM interior
styling. <jk> Yes the same company that brought you the Ass-tec brings
you that Z06, sheesh.

Might explain the imbalance. The good engineers were staying up late to
work on the Z06, the AssTek engineers were arguing "Darlington vs.
Talladega" over donuts.
