Try magnesium. Titanium is surprisingly more dense than aluminum, but not as
dense as iron.

Element Atomic # Atomic Mass density(gm/cc)
Magnesium 12 24.305 1.74
Aluminum 13 26.9815 2.7
Titanium 22 47.9 4.54
Iron 26 55.847 7.87

In actual practice, engine parts are made of alloys to gain strength and
other desirable properties.

Group,
Just got off the phone with my friend Mike, and he's considering a 1992
325iC with 30k miles (first BMW for him!).
VIN# WBABB131XNEC05445. (Carfax info -- privately?)
I've checked KBB, and it's priced OK if nothing is too wrong with it. He
knows the basics for checking out a used car. I'm giving him
www.NeilWerke.com for some E30 tips. (I know I've seen a few threads along
these lines here.) I also wondered if there's any (E30) experienced folks
in the vicinity of Holland, MI who might be willing to look at it with him.
(Not a southern car, but also not a Detroit car -- Motor City/Road Salt
Capital of the midwest...)
TIA.

Subject: [uuc] <OT> Moving to Houston

Group,

My boss is trying to talk me into heading west down I-10 and taking a job at
the corporate HQ in Houston. One of the many issues I'm dealing with is that
the only parts of Houston I am familiar with are off the roads between the
airport, hotel, and office. I'd appreciate hearing off-line from any of our
Houston list members about what to look for when moving to town, especially
information about schools (I'll have a first-grader coming with me) and
neighborhoods. Knowing when and where the local BMW CCA group meets will be
good too!

Thanks,

Why not simply use a Helicoil in the transmission plug hole? It's cheap,
simple, and you end up with a stronger thread than the original. If they're
good enough to use on a spark plug hole, they're sure good enough for a
drain plug.

That's a much more reasonable solution than replacing the whole
transmission, even though you've later posted that your insurance company is
willing to spring for that.

the issue is that the structure of the tire that makes it able to run flat makes
it hard to detect a tire losing pressure in normal driving because there is
little difference in the way it feels to the driver. the sidewall is too stiff
& does not flex the way that a normal tire would when it's low on pressure. the
same thing is true to some degree with very low profile tires as well
apparently.

people who are in tune with their cars would be more likely to notice the change
in handling behavior with an under-inflated tire, but like everything else the
systems have to be designed for the lowest common denominator.

Total for a detachable with wiring looks like ~$1,250.00, save $400
for the 'fixed' one (I assume the ball stays in place - any Euro
UUC member confirm this?)

I heard that rumor too... about 4 years ago, 3 years ago, 2 years ago, last
year...

Always question the source of the rumor.

Valentine is not a company to float "rumors" and a recent call to them
revealed no new model coming out.

In terms of "new model", why? They update the V1 as necessary (and provide
an update service for older models) and it is already the best unit at any
price, and Mike Valentine appears committed to keeping it that way.

What would you change, size? Sure, if you wanted less effectiveness... but
the unit is already on par with most competing units' sizes. I had a
super-tiny Uniden a couple of years ago, the thing was useless compared to
the larger one it replaced.

My part was for the E34, but pricing seems in line with the E39. I believe
the E34 comes only in detachable form from BMW. For the E34, detachable
means the whole little gooseneck comes off and a cover plate snaps on making
the hitch nearly invisible when not in use.

I tend to agree, Don. Some tubing and some flat plate and your done.

I have an AOL account at home and you're exactly right. I had to
re-s*bscribe and now I get a message here or there (I received the
x-brace one this morning) but that was it nothing else. Tons of spam
still comes through, why do they keep trying to get me out of debt, and
some cute girl keeps sending me 'Hi' and 'it's me' messages. ;-)

Stupid AOL, stupid me for having AOL.
