Can someone give me a reason (beyond the 282hp vs 225 hp) why the 4.4 X5
is worth about $10,000 more?

I don't know whether I can do that, but I can give you five great reasons
why the 3.0 is a great choice: it's called a BMW manual transmission.

Gruppe,

After some spirited driving this morning on the way to work (read - this MB was riding
my tail) I smell the distinct odor of coolant coming from somewhere. I opened the hood
and checked if there are any tell tale leaks and everything looked good in there. But
in the passenger compartment you can definitely smell it. In my previous cars, this
usually would tell me that there is a leak in the heater core hoses. Any ideas?

I haven't worked on an M3, but if you are willing to do some work on your
car, a radiator is a pretty minor task. I did my radiator, hoses, belts,
thermostat, and water pump in an afternoon last spring.

As far as thermostat and belts - yes, I'd replace them As long as you have
things apart, I don't see much point in putting the old parts back on.

All:

Just got an ugly call from my wife. The radiator on our (new to us) 1995 M3
just broke it's top neck off, spewing antifreeze everywhere. Luckily she
was a few hundred yards from work so she pulled in and parked the car. I am
assuming that the plastic water pump gave up (no records of it being
replaced) and this the weakest link (apparently the top radiator neck in
this case) to fail. Does this sound right? Now the big question: what all
do I need to replace? Can the radiator be repaired or is this a terminal
event? I'm assuming new water pump, hoses, and repair/replace radiator.
How about thermostat? Should I do the belts while I am in there? Anything
else? Finally, is there any reason I cannot or would not want to do these
repairs myself? I get one free tow and figured I'd have the car dragged
home. I'd hate to have to pay to take it to a mechanic later...

On a related note, the BMW dealer/mechanic records I got with the car are
pretty useless. It states "Inspection II" and lists a charge, but does not
tell me what has been done. The car has 72k miles and all service is up to
date. Can I assume the belts were replaced or is this not a regular service
interval item?

Thank you all for your help. I'm going to try and order parts before
everyone heads out for beer, BBQ, and fireworks.

Kevin

This is caused by AOL. How? AOL has recently started rejecting some of the
mail from lists that sort by domain name. They have declared this an
"anti-spam' measure, but spam doesn't work like a mailing list and this
won't help one bit. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason as to who gets the
mail and who doesn't. Mike Donohue, the UUC Digest Administrator, is
working on a way to "fool" AOL into receiving mail that it damn well should
 receive. >>
Well, guess what?Yahoo does the same thing but they call it "Spamguard".

I stopped receiving the Digest too. So, I un*scribed and s*bscribed again. I
didn't have to fool AOL. I had to fool the UUC Server and it wasn't very hard
to do so.

Do it all.

Both of these components are known failure items and one probably does not
cause the other to fail, but I suppose it is possible. In my case the water
pump went (violently), and then a year later the radiator neck broke. If you
have the original pump, it will fail, it's just a matter of when. You know
that a something has a high failure rate when you call the dealer parts guy
and he chuckles as he tells you he has *lots* of that $375 radiator in
stock...sigh

When you have the water pump out, replace the accessory belts, thermostat,
and thermostat housing. You should be ok for another 5 or 6 years :-)

Good luck!

As someone who loves BMW's (and has owned the following: E28, E24, 2 E36
M3's and an MZ3 as well as an E46 2.5, I can say that neither the new M3 nor
the Z06 'vette could take my Boxster S from me despite the results of the
objective tests. In the subjective tests, I was skeptical before turning to
the dark side, but from a purist point of view IMHO nothing compares to the
Porsche. I am somewhat whimsical, but if I decide to keep this car past its
warranty, I will drop the new 3.6 320HP engine from an '02 911 in the car
and that will surely make a car one could truly fall in love with.

Sorry if this is a repeat, but I never received a copy from the list.

I jam having w/ my '86 325e. When i turn the steering wheel, it feels as if
the power steering is not functioning correctly and when i release the wheel
to let it return to the center, it returns only partially on it's own and
the last 1/2 turn has to be done physically. It hasn't done that before and
just showed up in the last day or so. I checked the power steering fluid
and it's full. Any thoughts on what it could be? Thanks

The car: '87 328iS (custom 2.8i M20 - ETA block, 325i head, Motronic 1.3).
The symptoms: Random rough-running and stalling accompanied by the
temperature gauge bouncing around and pegging itself on the hot side.
Items checked/replaced: Coolant temperature sensor; plugs (checked),
ignition wires (replaced); fuel delivery system.

I'm 4 hours away and cannot get to the car to look at it myself. I've
witnessed it do this and there is no pattern to the symptoms. Any help is
appreciated - we're stumped.

Subject: [uuc] <E30> Half shaft separation

All,

A curious thing happened to me last night. Driving down the road, I
heard a loud "clunk", followed by the sound of something dragging
underneath my car. I pulled off to the side of the road, but didn't
initially find anything dragging.

Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the driver's side half shaft had
completely separated from the differential output flange. All of the
bolts appeared to be there (and they were, as I discovered today).

Now, the weird thing is that everything was in good condition. The
bolts hadn't sheared at all, nor did anything look amiss. I bolted it
all up today, and it seems to be in good working order.

Does anyone have any theories as to why this happened? I replaced my
diff. about a year ago, but I torqued all the bolts to spec (Geoff
Patterson can back me up on this, right, Geoff?). Additionally, the
passenger side half shaft is as snug as ever.

The closest I can come to figuring it, there was some sort of strange
vibration that caused all the bolts to slowly back out. But whence came
this vibration?

I'll entertain any theories y'all might have, realistic or otherwise...
:-)
