Since I've been off the list for a while, has anyone recently advertised an E28 535i in the general vicinity of Cape Cod? Ideally, it'd be something with a good engine (and all associated systems), five speed transmission (with somewhat recently replaced clutch), good body, and screw the rest of it, because I have all that stuff to swap in. I can swap in my good seats, radio, limited slip differential, front and rear suspension, euro lighting and wiring, taillight lenses, carpeting even... blah blah blah. I realized that I had not explained the situation completely when I posted last night. the car was a '87 325iS, then the drivetrain was swapped from a '96 M3. the interior is from a E30 M3. the eated seat center console from the donor M3 must not have been available to Dwight when he built the car or perhaps he didn't want to wire them up. as far as anyone can tell they are heated seats - IIRC Carlos recognized the wire pattern from his car. as I don't think they had occupant sensing for any reason in these cars what else could they be ?? The problem is when I'm driving at high speed, and I take my foot off the excelerator while the aircondition is on, it seems to go off, and then comes right back on again. Also if it is on, and I have to hit my brake, it does the same thing, goes off and then returns on again. Does anyone know what this could be? My '85 535i (with transplanted '88 power seats, a direct plug-in) had it, I know because it went bad... started bonging at me whenever I was seated until I unplugged the sensor plugged into the seat. I have a 95 M3 engine in an 84 318 body. The 318 did not come with cruise control that year and E36 M3 hardware is hellishly expensive. So I have been looking at aftermarket kits. Rostra looks like the only manufacturer selling these in the US. I have not been able to find any of their products on the shelf in N cali. They use Audiovox as one distributor. Generally Audiovox is best avoided, but their $90 cruise control kit seems pretty clever and well made. It is vacuum driven and it has inputs for engine RPM, brake action and engine speed. It disengages if its off button is depressed, the brakes are applied, or the clutch is depressed. I think RPM measurement is used to detect clutch depression. I think I can fit the control unit in the engine compartment, but I wonder where I can pick up a steady vacuum source. The manual says that I must connect the tach input to the - coil lead. This of course is not possible so I will have to adapt the engine speed signal coming from the E36 M3 DME. If I can't make that work, I suppose I could buy an official BMW clutch pedal switch and put it in series with the brake application detection signal. Comments appreciated.
