Jose, I believe the sport seats were an option in the Euro 323i. A GGC member friend has an '85 gray market (privately imported) 4 door 323i with the sport seats (at a time when BMW NA gave us all kinds of silly reasons why you could not put sport seats in a 4 door E30). I've seen the sport seats in other gray market E30 323i's, but I've also seen a couple of 323i's without the sport seats. Depending on my availability to make time to get it back together. Rebuilt engine, head, all new seals top and bottom, clutch, short shift, master, and slave cylinders, hoses, ignition, brakes. and lots of misc stuff. Calf car(read only 3 small non critical rust spots), with extensive P.O. records, gone through by Bavarian Machine Specialties in Houston last Oct.(before driving to chicago) Have the list of fixes. Almost all done. Interior exellent, custom seat, Malaga (dark maroon) and tan. OH! and new rubber too. Any interested parties please contact me! The top mechanism on both sides ate up some of the space that would have been available in a tin top model. The E30, like most BMW models, was introduced in Europe a year before it was brought to the U.S. I know of at least one 1984 E30 318i with a production date of June 1983. Normally (as if anything is normal any more), a given MY production starts in September of the prior year, although there are exceptions to this "rule". This makes buying parts difficult for cars made in the transition years. I can't address any of the heated seat questions. None of the 5 BMWs I've owned had them. The instant after failure, a tremendous load is suddenly applied to the next bolt, shearing it. This continues around the wheel. Given that you could probably drive quite a few miles safely on two bolts, this mode of failure seems to make sense. It would seem less likely for all the bolts to fail at once. This raises two questions. What causes the first bolt to fail? A defective bolt does not seem likely. Presumably the bolt has been stressed too many times and has finally reached the end of its useful life. We can also infer that the other bolts are probably close to the end of their life, since they have all seen the same loads. This suggests that bolts need to be replaced occasionally, as now suggested by Club Racing. Any other thoughts on the failure of that first bolt? Second, within reason, does it really matter how many bolts you have? Whether you have four, five, or six bolts, the sudden tremendous load caused by the first bolt failure is still going to shear off the rest of the bolts one by one around the wheel. Obviously at some number the load per bolt drops to a low enough level for one failure to be irrelevant. But is that number six or twenty-six? It seems the real difference between having four bolts and five is simply how often you need to replace your bolts. And for those of you who tout studs as being safer, how often do you replace your studs? They are no less prone to this type of failure. I would like to do an informal study on bolt failures. If you are aware of a situation where lug bolts have failed, please e-mail me privately with the basic details. I need to know how many bolts the car was using, and some kind of identifying information (car, driver, location, date, etc.) so that I do not count any incidents twice. Also, I am not interested in cases where the bolts came loose, that is a different scenario. I wil report back to the digest with a summary. I wanted to followup my own thread with a summary post: I made a $13k offer on the white E30 M3 with motorsport stripes last week based upon great feedback here to which the owner balked and said there was no way he would get rid of it for under $15k. I thanked him politely and hung up, and was bummed that it didn't sound like it would happen. Friday night I received a call back where he offered to split the difference with me at $14k and I accepted. I picked it up last night and drove it around a bit... it's a great car. The stripes are even growing on me slightly although if I ever find myself with a spare 3k, I might have it repainted. I wanted to say thanks to everyone on the list... I have to swap out the pads and rotors to pass tech and if anyone sees me Friday at Buttonwillow for the Central Chapters lapping day, feel free to come up and say Hi. I have a feeling it'll be hard to miss me. Germany? Canada? Are you sure you are talking about the true Recaro-style sport seats? Between my brother and I we own four sets and none are heated. I've seen dozens of others and don't recall seeing heat controls. I guess what really surprises me is that the '88 iX's, which all came loaded and were obviously designed for winter use, do not have seat heaters. If BMW was going to install them anywhere, this would have been a no brainer location. Of course, the iX was not particularly successful in the US and even BMW does not do the obvious sometimes.
