In finer divisions of time, a BMW is either the old model or the new one, or it is built in a given year, built in given year or late in a given year (i.e. before the summer shutdown or after), built in a particular month and year, or built in a particular week and year. The last is important because most cars are built to order. German customers like to plan and German dealerships carry very little new car inventory. Perhaps the delay you are seeing in the U.S. is the time it takes BMW NA to fill and empty their dealerships' much larger and widespread inventory. Replacing early model parts with late model parts is generally a good thing, especially if the late parts are from a heavier car. Bushing stiffness and part strength is often better. As for aluminum vs. steel, the aluminum parts are a little bit lighter. There is a general trend towards more and more aluminum suspension parts. Each new model has more. OEM cost and replacement part cost are two different things. Last I checked, aluminum arms are twice the cost of steel ones. Considering that only 1/3 of the weight of a control arm is unsprung, and the weight savings of only a few lbs., I would not pay dearly for aluminum over steel. My experience with these was that the foam isn't easily "filled". I bought an extra set of top and bottom foam from the dealer and spread it around the four seats I had reupholstered. The areas you describe are reinforced internally with a fibre gauze type material because of the extra wear they encounter.
