I've heard that the carcasses of the SP8000 and the SP9000 are the same. The difference (they say) is that the SP9000's tread is designed more for wet traction, less for dry. The S.F. Bay Area does not get the amount of rain that Seattle gets (for example), but when it rains, I've had no traction problems with the SP8000s. Around here, I couldn't justify the extra expense of the 9000s. Then again, my commute doesn't involve runs to 130 MPH or four wheel drifts... Just my .02 cents. The methodology to determine UTQG treadwear grades are specified in federal law. There is some leeway for statistical manipulation. A company can apply different confidence levels to its own products, and of course, different companies apply different confidence levels in general. Treadwear grades are comparable between different brands and within a brand with a comparable but not necessarily good level of confidence. In addition to the statistical variation, some tires wear well in the test but poorly in the conditions in which you drive. The opposite is also true. The standard wear test is low severity and indexed so that 100 is 30,000 miles. High severity use will make a large difference in actual wear, and will reverse the order of test performance. A standard all season tire may wear slowly driving straight down the highway, but will quickly wear to the chords when driven hard. An ultra high performance tire may wear relatively quickly driving down the highway but stand up well to track use. Have a few more questions... After avoiding near certain engine destruction by replacing a self destructing timing belt that made itself aparent by being too loud, I find that the new belt has made the engine so much quieter that there are new sounds I get to wonder about. Specifically, my engine has a slight knock at idle. Not loud, just loud enough that you can hear it outside, but it does seem to be transmited through the body (then again, the power antenna in operation is about the same volume level or louder than this knock, also transmited through the body). There is no knock off idle and the engine pulls strong all the way through it's range. Bottom end? Top end? I don't know... The engine has nearly 200kmi on it, so perhaps this is normal. The idle is a bit rough too. Steady but rough. The idle got rougher when I put the Bosch platinums in. Perhaps I should get rid of them and get the propper copper plugs in there. When I first put 15 inchers on my E30, I bought D40M2s. They were much better than the stock 195/65 size that came on the car, and I liked them a lot. When those wore out, I moved upscale to the SP8000s (same size as the D40s), and the improvement was again dramatic.
