So far it's been 23 days since my road debris incident. The person I spoke with at BMW NA Customer Relations has been monumentally unimpressive so far. Any ideas on how to get my dealer this part so they can fix my car and give it back to me? Any names of helpful or senior people in the BMWNA Customer Relations organization? I'd kind of like to increase the enjoyment/frustration ratio of the car from it's current ratio of 4 hours: 23 days. There was this railroad diagonal crossing where I used to live. Speed was good. 30 or 40 maybe. Up & over, the right wheels wouldn't even touch the tracks. The landing zone was declined, so landings were silky smooth. :) I'm sure it felt more exciting that it actually looked though. A friend once told me the story of a sharp hilltop in his town that the kids would use for fun. Someone had an old van with just one seat, the driver's. He and 3 or 4 of his friends decided to go for a jump one night because it sounded like a good time. 3 or 4 kids were just sitting on the floor of this van. Maybe they figured it would be like a ride on the vomit comet, who knows? Up the hill they went, just as fast as the van could get going. They hit the top, and in zero-G panic, the driver hit the brakes good & hard. When the tires grabbed pavement again a half second later, pointed downhill, the passengers all arrived at the front of the van with no delay. I got to thinking about this more after I hit send, and am thinking that it might be good to check this. I never see the warning light though. Some tranny lubricants (i.e MTL) will cause the transmission to be surprisingly noisy (at idle, in neutral, clutch pedal released). My former M20 made a similar knocking noise at idle when the clutch was out and the trans was in neutral. I could hear it really well when waiting in a fast-food drive-thru as the sound would reflect off the building. It was traced to the transmission and I was told "most E30s did that." Eliminate this as the source before you spend money looking in the engine.
