Another customer comes in and asks for an airbag - the counter guy tells the customer that they aren't allowed by law to sell salvaged airbags and proceeded to sell the guy a new one. Don't know if they really can't sell salvaged airbags, or if this was a clever sales ploy. The place is pretty reputable and has always treated me fairly, so I tend to think that this wasn't a sleazy ploy and that the guy was telling the truth. Anyway, maybe someone in the biz could let us know.... I've a 96 328 ic, with a 3.23 LSD diff. from an M3, as well as 235 40 17 wheels, and aftermarket rear rotors and pads. Lately, and quite intermittently, yet ALWAYS from a standing stop, I've seen the traction control kick on, and felt what I believe are the brakes and ASC+T whole shebang actually kick in, even though the road is smooth and dry. The first time this happened, I was dropping my wife off at a clinic, and she looked under the car, so convinced we both were that something was caught underneath, offering resistance and a weird drone. In further step offs from a standing start, I've noticed the warning triangle with the exclamation point flash on and off, but no OBC warning came on..also, it is flashing with an even rhythm, not like when on uneven or icy/snowy turf underfoot, where it flashes variably as the ASC+T presumably & normally has kicked in and out as conditions warranted. My assumption is, in this case, to take it to Foreign Motors West in Natick Ma (across the street, basically, and great for in warranty work but bye bye costs beyond such..IMNSHO), since they have the million dollar computer to do diagnosics...am I wrong to assume that this fault will be traceable by the BMW diagnostic computer? If it is not likely to be a computer trackable electronic code, I'd rather take it to Jim Albright's Mighty Alewife Motors in Cambridge, since he is knowledgeable, way cheaper, and the local Roundel/BMWCCA tech rep-but he doesn't have the computer, much less much high tech equipment, or room, in his shop. My first salient question, assuming I go to a warranty/BMW auth. dealer, is..are they likely to give me a lot of malarky about the M3 diff being responsible..it is a year or so old, and I've had no trouble to date, but I realize it is not really compatible with the M3's intended ASC+T setup, which is somewhat different. Is it possible a failing diff could trigger the ASC+T, thus my problem is mechanically conspired, rather than electronic? My second question, also murky, is that I replaced my rear rotors and pads with aftermarket parts through a really shitty Shell dealer..I mean, these guys pulled off the emergency brake clip trying to remove the old rotors..I drove to Phila, and visited 3 dealerships before they pulled the brake parts apart and found the emergency brake pin spinning around the hub, making violin noises and snapping sounds all the way to Upper Darby! So, uh, is it possible my brakes, being aftermarket, are somehow clamping down, or otherwise causing some resistance which, in turn causing the OBC to sense uneven conditions, and activate accelleration retard and brake controls? Jeez, The Devil's in My Car (Fred Schnieder)! Final query of dealership hassle likliehood--the tires...since they're 235 40 17's, is it possible my OBC is sensing anything to do with these larger wheels, etc. I sincerely doubt it, since all of the faulty ASC+T activations have occurred at 5-10mph max, always from a standing start, and quite intermittently.. So, if I need a new ASC+T chip or computer, any ideas how much it might cost? I have BMW extended warranty, but I guess I'd like some economic measure of how much resistance-and possible excuses-I might hear from my dealer about its replacement, vis a vis my car's modifications. I was just currious if anyone else had done such a fix and how you went about it. Are there any alternative sources for the BMW seat cover? Can black vinyl really be dyed blue? I know I could buy a set of seat covers but, IMHO, they never seem to look "right" no matter how good they fit. The cats are illegal to sell used. I think "safety devices" might be legal but an individual business might choose not to expose itself to ridiculous $ liability risk from the insane "strict liability" standards that have evolved in the US out of case law over the last 50 years. Find it and pull it. If the cold air continues to blow, it is probably a stuck compressor clutch. If the A/C disengages without the relay, the problem is in the circuit that turns on the A/C, like a switch or the relay.
