"The Department of Transportation requires each manufacturer to grade its
tires under the Uniform Tire Quality Grade (UTQG) labeling system and
establish ratings for treadwear, traction, and temperature resistance. These
tests are conducted independently by each manufacturer following government
guidelines to assign values that represent a comparison between the tested
tire and a control tire. While traction and temperature resistance ratings
are specific performance levels, the treadwear ratings are assigned by the
manufacturers following field testing and are most accurate when comparing
tires of the same brand."

No, Manchester, N.H. is not the only place this could occur.
Man purchases stolen red BMW. Man gets drunk. Man's key won't open red
BMW. Man tries to break into red BMW with brick. Police inform man that he
is trying to get into the wrong red BMW. Man is arrested for receiving
stolen property (red BMW #1), and for criminal mischief (red BMW #2). Doh!

Subject: [uuc] stupid E39 question

Hey Guys

Sometime back I posted the following question, and got no responses -- I
assumed because it was just too moronic. But today I learned that the post
bounced because I (stupidly) posted in HTML. Perhaps this time someone will
take pity.

So...
In order to put my E39 M5 on jack stands, where are the safe jacking points?
I'd like to put the stands at the standard jacking points at the 4
corners, and to do this it would be convenient to lift one side of the car at
a time, placing the jack near the center of the rocker panel on each side.
The
cradle on my 2.25 ton Norco floor jack is 5.5" square (and I'm planning to
get a piece of dense neoprene or rubber to cover the top of the cradle). If
there is a standard jacking point near the center of each side it isn't
obvious to me.

Suggestions?

Subject: [uuc] Loser pay all...

eric asks:
My big, unobtainium question is how much lower this cost would be if we
instituted a frivolous lawsuit
"loser pays", decided by judge(s), system?

Last I heard, one or more German states had a system which requires each
party to a lawsuit to tender a settlement offer into court. Either party
may accept the other side's offer up to the day of trial. HOWEVER, if
the case goes to trial and the winning party fails to beat their own
offer by a certain percentage(25% I believe) they have to pay all the
costs and fees of the opposing party. That system makes sense to me.
Judges already have the authority to assess fees and costs if they
determine that an action is frivolous; it's called Rule 11. The problem
is, most judges don't utilize it nearly enough(if at all). Unlike yours
truly, who has even whacked a small claims court plaintiff with a Rule
11 sanction...

Hey Bula, I went to Berkeley!

Anyhow, I hear the 730's get a lot noiser as they wear on, anybody care to
comment?

A hearty second for the Bridgestone RE 730s. I have about 10,000 miles on
mine--all street driving, including several long, high speed trips and lots
of mountain driving--and they are great handlers and just a bit noisier than
the SP8000s and AVS Is I ran before. Wear is significantly better. Mine look
about 1/3d worn after 10,000 mi.

Subject: [uuc] <E30 speedo>

Hi all,

I've been reading all the stories about repairing the E30 speedo, and have
applied some of them to no avail.

First, the symptoms:

While driving the speedo needle will suddenly drop off the correct reading,
and sort of waver at about half the correct speed. If I tap the speedo face
with my finger, sometimes it fixes it, sometimes not.
While this is happening, the odometer doesn't register any miles, which
throws my fuel consumption calc off.

Now, what I've tried:

1. Pulled the instrument binnacle and tightened the earth nuts.
2. Pulled the instrument binnacle (again) and cleaned all the speedo
connections.
3. Cleaned the connections on the diff sensor
4. Pulled the instrument binnacle (again) and had it checked by a speedo
repair shop
5. Pulled the instrument binnacle (again) and reflowed the solder joints

All of these made no difference whatsoever

6. Replaced the diff sensor

This worked for about 3 weeks, now it's just as bad as before

Where do I go from here:

I read somthing about one of you guys identifying the actual signal and
tracing the fault. What was that?
Which are the speedo signal wires?
Any suggestions?

Eric,

As already established by a couple of previous posts, things have been way too civil
around here lately <yawn>! Too much "content" and certainly no stories about UUC
groupies or references to plastic Jesi (that's pleural for Jesus, in case you
language Nazis were wondering). To stir things up, maybe somebody around here can
change their "handle" to something that references political partisanship in a
derogatory fashion........or, better yet, somebody can slander Rob, accusing him of
not following through on some promised UUC product or somethin' - hey, wait a second,
when the hell is that UUC front strut tower brace going to be available anyway?

If you manually switch it off does the problem go away? ABS+T works from
ABS sensor inputs. A bad one, or bad toothed ring, might input a false
message.
