This was happening to my E36 M3 - the speedo would drop off the correct
reading, waver at some point, drop to zero, come back, etc. On the advice
of a bunch of UUC'ers, I was just about to change the sensor in the diff,
when the diff just died. Explanation was that as the diff goes bad, metal
particles stick to the speed sensor. So, you may want to check your diff
fluid to see if there are any pieces of metal floating around....

All this talk about jack stands and where to place
your jack reminds me of a story.

I was over at my mothers house a little over a year
ago when I looked out the window to see the neighbor
across the street using the scissor jack from the
trunk to lower his car down onto - get this - Milk
Crates! to do some engine work from underneath. This
guy has 3 kids but no brain (apparently)as he was
about to leave them without a father. I ran over
there an stopped him, then brought over a hydraulic
jack and jack stands to hold the car off his head. My
mom made me help him with the rest of the repair
because she didn't want to see him go away in an
ambulance for any reason. Who knows what he could
have done with a wrench.

I think you would have to use something extremly stiff to effectively
spread the load. A wood member will just deflect and the vast majority of
the load would still be in the small area of the jack pad.

I have always jacked up cars by the front or rear, not by the sides
(assuming I am using a floor jack). For the front, I position the jack pad
under the subframe, and at the rear under the diff. If you are trying to
get the car up onto jackstands, w/ working room under, the induced angles
you put the car into are less because the wheelbase is longer than the
track. Of course, many cars are too low in front to get a floorjack under,
so I have some little homemade 4" high ramps I drive the car onto to gain
clearance. O.K. - now my questions are 1) Is this method of jacking OK? and
2) Once the car (E36) is up, what are the preferred points to place the
jackstands?

On another subject - I still have the following E36 stuff for sale. All
prices are as listed or best offer.

Complete suspension - Fully assembled front strut units, F & R sway bars,
Rear shocks, Rear springs - All for $100

Cat - back exhaust system - $100

Alloy wheels (bottle cap type) with brand new Dunlop Sport 5000 205/60/15
tires, mounted & balanced - $250. The tires alone are more than this from
Tire Rack.

AM/FM/Cassette unit - Working fine when removed - $50

Shift Lever - For DIY short shift? - $10

I did that before! Then again, it was a VW beetle, so that really doesn't
count. If it fell on me I would have just bench pressed it off of me ;)

Wehave an 88 325iC with a 5 speed and 115k miles. The shifter is
getting rather sloppy and I am looking for advice on exactly how to fix
it up. Should I just rebuild it with OE parts or use a kit of some
kind. The car is used mostly for casual driving, ie. no real need for
'high' performance. Comments welcome.

Replying to the list b/c I'm sure there are more than a few wondering what's
up.

This is a transcript from an old video game called Zero Wing.

This little bit has had much more than it's 15 minutes of fame, but
continues to circulate.

On the V8 cars look for a serrated-dome-shaped protrusion (projecting
downward) stamped into the front crossmember behind the engine sump, it
should be visible aft of the belly pan (the M5 belly pan extends all the
way to the transmission tailshaft housing, but has a hole in it allowing
the jacking point to stick through...)

A short 2x4 in the saddle of the jack does just fine for me.

Subject: [uuc] Peculiar speedo behavior

My GF has an Infiniti I30 (her next car will be a BMW) with an
interesting intermittent speedo problem. Maybe someone here
can point me in the right direction.

For several months the speedo would occasionally stick at 0 until
the speed exceeded 40mph. It would then suddenly jump to the
correct reading and would continue working normally as long as the
car was being driven. It didn't happen 100% of the time, but I
did observe it myself once or twice.

Recently the threshold speed has increased to ~60, and the frequency
of this weirdness has also increased. Needless to say, it's now
becoming pretty useless for city driving.

Ideas, anyone?

Rebuilding will certainly be less expensive than a short-shift kit.
Just a few small items from the dealer.

That can't possibly happen, everyone knows Japanese cars are more reliable
than German ones :-).

All cars have electronic speedometers these days. There must be a problem
with the sensor, wires, or some processing that happens. Look for the
sensor and follow the wires. Check the output. Maybe an experienced
Infiniti mechanic know a particular weak point.

List,
My 535i lightly pulses at constant speed.
I have done everything listed below and more, including plugs, wires, cap ,
rotor, vapor purge diaphragm, *all* vacuum lines and fuel lines. These all
were worn out and needed refreshed but I still have the surge...it drives me
nuts!! It is even worse right after cold start...feels like I am on and off
the gas pedal slightly. Could this be a sign of leaky fuel injector
o-rings? or maybe a funny fuel pressure regulator?

This big six should be smooth!! (except at idle of course)

I KNOW, I KNOW!!
<snip>
He immediately said, "lean surge." He also suggested I change the O2
sensor. What? I thought a bad O2 sensor made the car run rich.
<snip>
Voila! Instant fix. Better acceration, smoother everything.
<snip>
Just for kicks change the fuel filter, and run some Techron, Red
Line, or BMW fuel injector cleaner through, too. Change your oil
afterwards. Also check for vacuum leaks and missing/popped off
vacuum hoses, esp underneath the plenum.

Matt,

(Hopefully this post will be more useful to the list than "all your base," which
I heard about from the uuc list in April and was sending to *Ulrik*... but
apparently misfired on the mouse-click.)

Is it any any particular speed, RPM, or throttle position? If it's constant or
specific throttle...
I had an '89 Taurus that pulsed at constant speed/RPM/*throttle*
(65mph/2000rpm/moderate throttle) when cruising on the highway. Replacing the
worn throttle position sensor fixed it.
My '93 325is exhibited similarly odd behavior at around 1000 rpm/light load. I
found this was due to someone, for whatever reason, leaving the TPS unplugged
entirely.
Throttle position sensor for a Ford Taurus: $60.
Plugging in a perfectly good E36 3-er TPS: $0.
Cars that don't pulse or surge: priceless.
Good luck with your gremlins.
