..depends on what you like it to feel like. A short shift kit isn't
"high performance" in that it won't make your car faster, or even make
you shift faster. It's all in the feel. If you love a super precise
shifter feel, and can deal with slightly higher shifting force, then
get the SS kit.
If you just want it to feel ok, like it did when it was new, then
rebuild with OE parts.

Steve, even just for street driving, you won't believe how much more
enjoyable it is to shift with a "short shift kit". The favorite source for
UUC Digest members is (are you ready for this?): UUC Motorwerks. They got
their start by creating shifter kits using shift levers from different BMW
models. You can't in good conscience be a member of the Digest without
using their shift kit. Check out:

http://www.uucmotorwerks.com

Having said that, I'll publically admit that I cheated (yes my conscience
still bothers me) and didn't follow my own advice. I had an E36 M3 shift
lever installed in my E30 325i. Even without the trick bushings and effort
reduction parts from the UUC kit, it made a huge difference in the feel and
operation of the shifter. My car is much more fun to drive with the short
throw lever.

I just bought a used V1 (1996 version ) that came without a power cord of
any kind .
I realise they arent very expensive ('bout $10 from Mr V ) but wunnert if
anyone out there has some to unload ? Prefer an uncoiled (flat )one.
Eventually I'll hard-wire it into OTA the TOY that thinks it's a
transcontinental truck but for now I just want a wire to get it up and
running while searching for the best mounting spot .

Subject: [uuc] Glad to be back and some "EML" questions...

Hello UUC-land,

Well, after signing off over a year ago, I have decided to
re-join the list with the purchase of a new-to-me '92 535i
5-speed. I have already put over 1000 miles on it, including
a drive up to the White Mountains in NH and a nice blast over
the Kancamagus Highway and on Bear Notch Rd. I recall this
run being the subject of some posts here in the past. It
is a classic run for New Englanders, as long as you don't
encounter much traffic.

Unfortunately, this drive was on the 4th of July, so I was
pretty badly spudded on the way up ("spud" is a word an old
friend has always used for slow drivers...). However, I
did manage to enjoy some of it, and I must say that third
gear from 50-90 mph is a real hoot. After passing a couple
of spuds on a long straight and pulling back over, I stayed
on it until my wife says something to the effect of "you
ARE past those cars, you know...". I eased up and smiled
at her, at which point she checks out the speedo and she
couldn't believe we were doing almost 90. "It sure doesn't
feel like it..."

On the way back home, it was raining pretty heavily and it
was dark, but at least there were fewer cars and those I
encountered were quickly and easily dispatched. Passing
on a two-laner in this car is so much easier than I am used
to. I was impressed how easily this car dealt with those
less than optimal conditions and how I was still able to
carve over the Kancamagus at a decent clip without my wife
getting overly nervous. She commented after this longish
drive on how darned comfortable this car is for her as
passenger. Believe me, having a car for long trips that
I can actually enjoy driving while at the same time doesn't
put my wife on edge is a VERY good thing!

Can you tell that I'm falling in love with this car? It is
so much nicer to have a 5-speed in these things -- my
'88 535is has the Auto. Also, for my needs the surprising
amount of refinement in this car over the '88 is welcome,
even though it is a couple of hundred pounds heavier. The
'88 is now up for sale, by the way.

Now, I had originally thought that this would be the simple
"Hello" message ending here, but alas, I actually have
questions to pose regarding this car...

The car has Traction Control, and as such, the electronic
throttle, and with that the "EML" warning light on the panel.
Well, this light has come on several times now for no
apparent reason, and the only real effect I can discern is
that the cruise control will refuse to work. The first time
it happened, I found a safe place to pull over and shut the
car off. I then checked out the owner's manual, which
basically said "drive at low speeds and get it checked out
at the dealer". Not very helpful... I decided to try
again, and the car started fine, the warning was off and
the car drove fine until it happened again many trips later.
It's been about three times, now. Each time, shutting the
car off and restarting clears it. I haven't yet gotten the
Bentley for this car, and I poked around on the net a bit
with little success, so I figured I'd bring it up here.

So, the questions are:

Is my practice of "rebooting" the system alright?

Is this a sign of impending doom?

Assuming the worse, that parts of this system
(sensors/motors/etc.) will need replacement, are the
     parts really expensive?

Is this system something a reasonably competent shadetree
     mechanic can diagnose and repair?

Any net resources anyone can point me to?

Thanks,
Mike Kohlbrenner

IIRC, 'RJ11' is the phone *connector*, not the cable designation. If that's
right, then 'RJ45' would be the ethernet *connector*. If somebody needs a
phone wire with RJ11 ends or CAT5 cable with RJ45 ends, let me know. I'll
send 'em an extra from my stash for the cost of the shipping, the packaging,
gas for the trip to the P.O... ;-)

Bill,

Do what I did when the plug came off my V1 cord while I was away from home:
stop at a drugstore or K-Mart and buy a phone cord. You choice of colour or
length, cheap.

Hi Gang,
Need to replace an aging battery in my '95 325 and I need to know where I
can get one in the East Bay Area. What's the consensus about Interstate
batteries? Is there any other good ones out there? Any help would be
appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Ugh

Looks like I'll be adding a few more items to my check
list. Checking the ground wires and for other loose or
discontinuous wires. Replacing the o2 sensor. More
closely examing for air leaks. Possibly swapping ECUs
between the '85 and '86.

Hopefully this is a plain text file acceptible from to the list.

G'day.......

I remember hearing a discussion on the group some time ago about a
particulat type of ECU on 325's that is a bit of a dud (159??) and another
that swaps in (179??) and solves the problem. Anyone done this and can
confirm a good result?

When y'all are doing this be aware that phones run in AC mode vice the DC
you need to power your V1. If the maker of the cord doesn't care about
polarity you can fry something.
