BTDT- RUN FOR YOUR LIFE! We just converted the analog phone in our '98 E38 to the CT7000 Startac. There's a lovely kit to do the job. Parts alone were $1100. Labor was initially $240, and our service advisor swore he'd never do one again. It took 10 hours and he only quoted 3. Then we actually tried to *use* the thing. It didn't work. Another 7 hours of labor later, (this time we had to pay it, $85 an hour), it turns out Pacific BMW had sent the wrong phone electronics box (sent for Verizon and an X5, not AT&T and the E38) so we had to buy that as well. Total bill second time= $700, and now I have to deal with trying to get Pac BMW to take the blasted part back, not to mention try and recoup some of that labor that I don't think I should have to pay, seeing as how I wouldn't have had to if Pac BMW had sent the right part to begin with. We originally undertook this conversion to try and lower the monthly bill on the phone, as AT&T is hideously expensive for analog- they really want to stop use of analog phones. it's about $1 a minute. yes, you read that right. digital goes for more like .25 a minute. If the idea ever enters your head to convert, just cut to the chase and buy a new CAR with the correct interface. It's not worth it. - -Felix Vicente Everglades Chapter (occasionally) '97 540/6 blk/blk, mine '98 740 wht/sand, mother's '95 525 calypso/parchment, sister's '95 332 blk/blk, brother in law's ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2001 21:35:06 +0000 From: "Dee B" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] BMW Motorcycle club? Would you not have thought it was not worth it when the parts prices were mentioned before the work even started?? are the steering wheel buttons worth that much instead of just using the phone buttons? There are several good in car kits that have the same features to a degree, just not the wheel functions and stereo mute functions. But at that price, a good installer could wire the radio to mute, play thru the speakers etc etc etc. Just wondering what the desire was to part with that kind of money for a almost outdated phone anyway? Mitsubishi does this on some of the more exotic turbo-charged cars, but a more common example is the Nissan Maxima. It has a spring loaded 'door' in the muffler that opens at revs for better flow (more hp), but is closed when the engine isn't producing enough exhaust to push it open, to aid in low-end torque. That said, the NSX didn't have this either AFAIK. Also, for the Civic the earlier VTEC on the D16 motor was both, but not separately. It was a SOHC motor, so when you change the intake timing, you necessarily change also the exhaust timing. On the DOHC VTEC motors (B16, B18C) it is intake only (like the Single VaNOS M50TU/S50 and M52/S52, obmwc!), although the B block derived S2000 motor does both (like the Doppel VaNOS S54). Fjord blue/navy vinyl interior(sheepskins on the front seats, original upholstery perfect). Silver basket-weave Rial wheels. Automatic trans., 187k miles, 12k or less since: Complete re-paint, 3 coats, replaced hood and front doors( rust around edges, cheaper to replace than fix...and better). Replaced header, engine overhaul(get details from owner). Transmission re-built. Water pump, alternator, air-conditioner compressor, replaced/rebuilt. New brakes, shocks, muffler, radiator, battery & cables, belts. All of the work is 5 years old(paint) or newer(brakes & shocks replaced a couple of months ago). My uncle never planned to sell this car, spent $15k on it in the past 5 years. It is a very nice looking driver, and I can e-mail a photo if anyone is interested. Things wrong: window motors in rear doors don't work. Haven't for some time, as my uncle didn't care: "Either the air is on, or the sunroof is open and the front windows are down." The dash cracked years ago, and there is a BMW "carpet" cover over it. The car is located in St. Augustine, FL. If you are interested, contact the owner: Paul Zucker, [EMAIL PROTECTED], or by phone at (904) 471-5427. He's been asking $4k, but if you're interested, make an offer. He's got a new VW Beetle, and would like to sell. This might be just as good a deal as used wheels, only you'd be getting new wheels. Just a thought. Scott Miller GGC BMW CCA >Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2001 16:51:24 -0400 >From: "Mark A. I have an '88 325is track car. The car has 125k mi on it. When I got the car, it had been poorly maintained. A lot of reconnecting wiring and replacing sensors and it ran well. That is, until it's first track event two weekends ago at VIR (Tarheel BMW -- great event!) The car's always run a bit hot (temp would start to creep up at idle). It lacked an aux fan when I got it, so I installed one. I also backflushed the rad and refilled with 85% distilled water/15% antifreeze and a bottle of water wetter. That seemed to help the problem, but the car still ran a bit warmer than expected in traffic. I was told this was not atypical of the M20 motor. Not sure if it's significant to this problem or not. <snip> >> Gruppe, They say ignorance is bliss, and this thread I have been following has shattered my Bliss. I have been suffering the same_exact_problems. Add to that the fact that the car has been rattling like a diesel, and I think I might have just figured out what the prob is. Spun Bearing. The engine (this is the beloved Dirty E30 84 318i) has ONLY 251k miles on it, still a baby! I think I can rule out all the advice that you have been giving since essentially all the parts you mention i have replaced. The oil pump and pan gasket are 1 yr old, the fan clutch was replaced during my cooling fiasco from several weeks ago (You all will be happy to know that the high temps I noticed after the fan clutch was replaced was due to my ineptitude, I hadn't re-checked the water level after flushing/checking the radiator, and it was significantly low when it dawned on me to do so.) Valve lash was done in November. So that covers what has been mentioned in the easy fix dept. Oil pressure sender was replaced approx 2 years ago as well, could still be bad, but i doubt it. BUt my problems have lessened, not abated. Here's the recap, you give the free advice, but I am thinking I have a dead motor (sniff) - --Oil pressure warning light comes on after car gets to operating temp. and sitting at idle for more than a minute or two (I blip the gas slighty to be safe) - --Overheating to the mark at times when sitting for too long at idle - --Rattling like a damn diesel under load, @3000-4000k rpms in any gear sans 1st. I know that SOMETHING was wrong but I was hoping for the best. I think I might just bring it to the mech just in case I missed something, but I'd appreciate some input here. And if someone has a nice (worked?) M10 B18 near NJ, I might have a use for it. Not quite wealty enough for my stealth S14 conversion. Speaking of which, I was thinking of rebadgeing the car to 316i when and if i do, just to add insult to injury :) TIA for any and all input, but I think the motor may indeed be terminal. (Damn, it's like losing a dear friend.......Thank God there are about million of these 'friends' floating around!)
