At low speed, the engine power is quite low so there is essentially no exhaust backpressure anyway. The flaps and such are there for noise control during cruise conditions. On my '88 528e, I found that the 225/50-16 tires sapped way too much power for my tastes. It made the car seem heavy and slower, although the cornering improved tremendously. For daily driving chores, I would recommend either the 205/55-16 or I would some 205/60-15 tires on E34 or E39 15" wheels. Of course this is more personal preference than anything else. Well, now that you have finally asked :), my dealer's parts manager doesn't think there is much difference between the Bosch and ZKW E36 headlights. He is probably not biased toward one or the other as he sells both to support what's already in a customer's car - for the same price, and I expect, the same markup. I have it on hearsay that one magazine found the Bosch headlights tested better. I may have the review somewhere in the archives. Usually about 300-400 mins a month. at $1/min vs. $.25/min, that's $225-$300 savings a month using rough numbers. Phone will pay for itself (assuming I can get Pac BMW to refund at least some of that 2nd wave of labor) within a year, easy. Since we plan on this car being a long-term proposition (ie it stays until it is no longer feasible to keep it running) the savings will add up. When I bought the 7000, BMW was not promising any adapter kits for the older E38s on the 8000. Thus I bought the 7000 before they ran out. In theory their accuracy is also a function of the emissivity of the object being measured - black emits more energy for the same temperature than white or shiny - but in practice I haven't seen much difference when measuring lighter or darker parts of the same object. Other than the ability to read in the range you want (some don't read high enough to measure brake or exhaust temperatures, you want a top end of at least 750 deg F for that), the only really essential feature in my view is a built-in laser aiming device. Otherwise it's hard to tell just where you're measuring. For the same reason, a reasonably narrow field of view is helpful. A while back I got a one-time great deal on a Fluke 65 with memory which normally retails for over $250, but I note that Griots Garage is offering a decent seeming 0-500 deg F unit with laser aiming for just $99. BTW, although a probe-type thermometer is said to be the device of choice for measuring tire temps at the track, I've done a side-by-side comparison with my IR pyrometer and found little difference between the two methods.
