Besides a 24k mile odometer fraud being suspected, it had a salvage/junk title. Now, that being said, if anyone is looking for a cheap ($19k) 1997 4 door M3, check out <www.ecocar.com>. Perhaps they don't make it clear on their website anymore, but Ecocar.com has always (?) specialized in totaled, flooded, rebuildable, repossessed, or otherwise abnormal vehicles. Not all of them have salvage titles, but many do. Be sure to investigate the dealer you're shopping. Stan _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? First mark a circle. Drive slowly and mark the top of the steering wheel with a piece of tape. This is the Ackermann steering angle and represents zero slip angle. Speed up, mark wheel at this new speed which should be more steering angle. Get lap times. Speed up some more, mark wheel, get lap times. Repeat until driving at the maximum. Knowing the steering ratio, divide into the steering wheel angle to get front wheel angle. Plot front wheel angle vs. lateral g's for each speed. Connect the dots and draw a line. This technique does not measure the actual slip angle, and ignores any deflection or roll steer at the rear, but is accurate enough to provide an objective measure of a car's understeer. When dealing with a particular car, steering wheel angle vs. lateral g's is all you really need. Once you make a few plots, you will be able to figure out how fast to go at the intermediate points to make a good graph. Skidpad work is very tough on tires, so don't do this continuously. 1 or 2 laps is all you need at each speed. I've seen the car three times while driving around town. The first was a Sunday morning, and he was out for an early morning drive. The second time, the car was on a flat bed. The third time, the car was pulled off on a side street, and was being loaded onto a flat bed. This all within a span of maybe three months. Hmmmmm. Oh, and one of my neighbors has a Diablo. It has yet to emerge from the garage. He works on it all the time, but I have never seen him drive it. The doors are both up and the engine bay is open. Doesn't look good. I don't know him, and we have different schedules (He owns several, uh, clothing optional night clubs) so I have not had the chance to ask him about the car. I'm sure there's a "BMW-approved" procedure, but here's what I do: - - Pull up REALLY HARD on the headrests (75% of the time the posts come out too). - - If a post remains in the rear shelf after headrest removal, rotating the post 1/4 turn in toward the center of where the headrest was, will release it. So far, this has worked the half-dozen times or so I've removed the rear headrests. Scott Staewen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] synth oil query Hello All: I have a question for you -- particularly you techie (sp?) types and those knowledgable about BMW politics. There is a great deal of confusion out there regarding the proper viscosity oil for the new M cars. My understanding is that BMW specified Castrol 10W60 synthetic for US production E39 M5's prior to March '00. In March '00 the recommendation changed to 5W30, which I believe is the same time frame as a change in piston rings on the S62 engine. 5W30 is specified for my car as well, a 4/01 build M5. There is a sticker on the engine to this effect, and 5W30 is what the US dealers seem to insist on. The confusing thing is that this recommendation is apparently for the US market only. I have read that in Europe 10W60 is recommended, and European dealers are equally adamant about using 10W60. Given that I live in a blastfurnace (Houston, TX) I feel that 10W60 may afford a bit more protection to the engine, and am considering changing to the higher viscosity oil. I am a bit uncomfortable going against BMW NA, however, without knowing exactly *why* 5W30 is recommended on US cars. So, does anyone out there know? Is this merely a CAFE standards issue or is there a basis other than political for specifying lower viscosity oil for US cars? TIA.
