Good observations, John. Mark's car is really prepared to club racing
level, and his investment in the car is a tiny fraction of what the rest
of GT field spends. And yes, it is registered - he drives it to all the
events he runs, including his Speedvision debut.

While I don't pretend to understand his thing re: the eR*m stuff (which
even he admits is dead), he's actually a pretty good driver.

I'm going to steal another lister's thunder and pass along the nugget he
presented me:

Next time you are talking to someone who is in their car on a cell phone,
yell, "Cop!"

A dollar says they slow down . Many even ask where. Some never understand.

Cheers,

Christian

Kim,

I wonder about that too, I wonder if it has something to do with closer
tolerances on the crank journals and the need to keep oil in the narrow gaps
under high load and heat. I wonder if there's a tie in to the early M3 motor
failures?????or something about the cylinder/oil rings are different. Brett?

Actually, the Winston guys would LOVE to run the Carousel. But the track
owner won't let them. You cannot build grandstands along that section of
the track, so he contructed the NASCAR Bypass from 4 to 7 so they could
build bleachers along it.

He wants a spectators track. Sheesh. The carousel is BY FAR the most fun
section of that track.

someone

Also, without the Carousel, it's a shorter track, so the spectators get to
see the cars pass them more times (assuming the same length race).

It's OK to laugh at ourselves, right?

So a guy in a BMW is in a parking lot getting into his car. As soon as he
opens the door, someone in another car drives by and knocks his door clean
off. He starts sobbing next to his car. "My car! I've only had it for a
month!"

A passer-by saw what happened and said, "Man- All you BMW drivers are the
same! You're so materialistic!! You care so much about your car... and you
didn't even notice that your left arm got ripped off!"

The guy replied, "Oh my god!! My Rolex!!!!"

Subject: [uuc] <E34> Chain Tensioner Woes!

Gruppe:

I have just finished replacing the chain tensioner on
my E34 M5. I primed the tensioner with Vaseline
(Thanks to Gary Derian for that suggestion), primed
the diaphragm with oil before installation, primed the
tensioner again after install by loosening the end
plug and bleeding it.

All to no avail. After 20 mins of idling the car
sounds the same. Rattly as Hell. I idled it again
after the end-plug bleed (as above) for 15 mins and
still no difference. I did notice that loosening the
end plug while the engine was running did change the
chain noise a bit (louder).

If any of you have had this problem, let me know how
long it took for your tensioners to bleed. I'm out of
ideas. Any other ideas would be welcome too.

I'd guess it is in the entry to turn 6, the Carosel. You do crest a hill
just before you turn in. The wheels on the M3 are pointed straight ahead,
so it would not be turn 2. If you're used to watching the NASCAR boys at
Sears Point, you don't ever see turn 6, since that part of the track was
replaced by the Chute for NASCAR racing.

Um, John, there's no way you can discuss the Duke brothers and be serious.
And I thought they were cousins.

Dukes of Hazard. Stoopid '70s TV show about good ol' boys from the South
who drive a bit more aggressively than most, sideways a lot, many jumps.
Catherine Bach (did I get the right Bach babe?) was the best part of the
show. Some good stunt driving too. Easier to stomach if you turned the
sound all the way down so you didn't have to listen to the idiotic dialog.
They didn't drive a BMW (OBMWC).

NOTE; THIS IS A 'TRIAL BALLOON' ONLY !!

I have a chance to buy (for resale here ) a set of Alpina wheels with offset
in the 5/6/7/8 series range (NOT E36 folks !!) .
They have been exposed to the gentle-braille method of touch-the-kerb
driving on at least one corner so have lost their virginity appearance-wise
.
Anyone interested in them for TRACK WHEELS ?
I can get them to you from Germany for about $1,100 which I recognise is NOT
cheap ...but a new set runs about $2200 so there IS value there .A $40 each
repaint may make them into great road-wheels .
YOUR call . Didnt want to let them pass if someone can use them......
Write if you find a job or are SERIOUSLY interested .Pix are avail

Subject: [uuc] re:lambo miura

My first encounter with a true exotic was with the Miura as well. I was a
teenager and it was in the late 70's at my friend Tony's body shop. Tony
has passed on, but was an absolute master at what I guess has become a
completely lost art. He would perfectly restore a body panel using only a
torch, dolly, and a few handmade tools. He didn't use filler -- not even
lead. It was truly amazing to see. Tony worked mostly on exotics, although
he took pity on me and fixed my Toyota when I crashed it. This he did at a
heavily discounted rate, the kind soul, in part because I helped with the
R&R. Tony was an interesting guy. I saw him once turn a person away because
his car was untidy. But I digress.

The Miura was in was in pieces when I first saw it, having recently caught
on fire (I think while being tracked). Even burned and in pieces it was
beautiful. Over several months I got to see it take shape, panel by panel.
Seeing that car come together is an enduring memory. Perhaps the Diablo and
Countach are embarrassments, but the Miura was (and is) a work of art. So
what if they occasionally catch fire and burn to the ground.

Subject: Re: [uuc] Lambo Miuras

Back in my college days, I installed turbocharger kits. The shop owner knew
a guy with a Lambo Miura that had an engine fire. I replaced the carbs and
synchronized everything, plus re-wired the dash and instruments. The
throttle cable was cracked and full of water so it would freeze open when I
drove the car (winter). I reversed the cable so the cracked end was in the
console. When I got it started, it seemed to run a bit slower than I
expected, but was still pretty fast. Some diagnostics with a volt meter
showed that one whole bank of the V-12 was not firing. It turns out the
breaker point spring was broken (two distributors, one for each bank).
After fixing that, the car was much faster.
