Hey guys,

I don't understand MTV anymore (getting too old?) but they just ran
an advertisement showing Gum Ball footage including Kim's Merc
(www.kimble.org) and a couple of Ferraris and this is the part I
didn't understand I think they're going to air it on that
show "Jackass" on Sunday at 10am ET.

Check it out because I can't, I'm recording the F1 race and am gone
all day at an autox. I'm sure they'll replay it so I'll catch it
sometime later.

Carlos.

Subject: [uuc] E36 fuel line problems

After filling the gas tank on my E36 the past few times, i've noticed a
really strong smell of gasoline when parked. i pulled out the rear seat and
opened the fuel pump access panel. it looks like the ~10-inch rubber hose
that connects the top of the pump (or is it the tank?) to the hard fuel
lines that run along the bottom of the car is, for lack of a better word,
saturated with gasoline. i'm hoping that replacing that section of hose
will get rid of the gasoline smell. anyone else had this problem?

Thanks for the plug, Byron Hong's site IS friggin hilarious. But it would do
wonders to share the link to either my site or his <BFG> I like to think that
I share in the quest for hours of wasted time on the net. On a side note,
Anderson Consulting has noticed that since my site's debut about a year or so
ago, 318i owners' productivity levels have dropped by nearly 20%. I hope i
don't have to pay reparations! Also, I live in NJ (like some quality list
owners) and I am near NJ's answer to the trailer park Riviera - Seaside. The
Ricers there are OOC - out of Control. I could almost match all of the Rice
Boy's page with one night of cars photo'd on the "strip" cruising. I kinda
want to, but then I realize I would miss out on kwality conversations with
you fine folk.
BTW, anyone remember my SOS on my engine? I hate to complain, but I got very
few responses, most from 1st (thank you good sir) and I am in a quandry.
Anyone have an M10 from a 318i for sale?

Gruppe,
I am guessing that a weekend is not a good time for deep probing q's on the
ultimate demise of your car, so I will repost again what i posted on Sunday.
Any and all answers are appreciated. From what i understand, it is quite
possible to install both new main bearings and rod bearings with out
completely pulling the engine. Feel free to try and disuade me one way or the
other. An S-14 convo is just not in the cards right now, but Oh I
wish..........

<< I have an '88 325is track car. The car has 125k mi on it. When I
got the car, it had been poorly maintained. A lot of reconnecting
wiring and replacing sensors and it ran well. That is, until it's
first track event two weekends ago at VIR (Tarheel BMW -- great
  event!)

The car's always run a bit hot (temp would start to creep up at
idle). It lacked an aux fan when I got it, so I installed one. I
also backflushed the rad and refilled with 85% distilled water/15%
antifreeze and a bottle of water wetter. That seemed to help the
problem, but the car still ran a bit warmer than expected in traffic.
I was told this was not atypical of the M20 motor. Not sure if it's
significant to this problem or not.
  <snip> >>
 Gruppe,

They say ignorance is bliss, and this thread I have been following has
shattered my Bliss. I have been suffering the same_exact_problems. Add to
that the fact that the car has been rattling like a diesel, and I think I
might have just figured out what the prob is. Spun Bearing. The engine (this
is the beloved Dirty E30 84 318i) has ONLY 251k miles on it, still a baby! I
think I can rule out all the advice that you have been giving since
essentially all the parts you mention i have replaced. The oil pump and pan
gasket are 1 yr old, the fan clutch was replaced during my cooling fiasco
from several weeks ago (You all will be happy to know that the high temps I
noticed after the fan clutch was replaced was due to my ineptitude, I hadn't
re-checked the water level after flushing/checking the radiator, and it was
significantly low when it dawned on me to do so.) Valve lash was done in
November. So that covers what has been mentioned in the easy fix dept. Oil
pressure sender was replaced approx 2 years ago as well, could still be bad,
 but i doubt it.
BUt my problems have lessened, not abated.
Here's the recap, you give the free advice, but I am thinking I have a dead
 motor (sniff)
--Oil pressure warning light comes on after car gets to operating temp. and
sitting at idle for more than a minute or two (I blip the gas slighty to be
 safe)
--Overheating to the mark at times when sitting for too long at idle
--Rattling like a damn diesel under load, @3000-4000k rpms in any gear sans
 1st.

I know that SOMETHING was wrong but I was hoping for the best. I think I
might just bring it to the mech just in case I missed something, but I'd
appreciate some input here. And if someone has a nice (worked?) M10 B18 near
NJ, I might have a use for it. Not quite wealty enough for my stealth S14
conversion. Speaking of which, I was thinking of rebadgeing the car to 316i
when and if i do, just to add insult to injury :)

TIA for any and all input, but I think the motor may indeed be terminal.

(Damn, it's like losing a dear friend.......Thank God there are about
million of these 'friends' floating around!) >>

When Detroit was doing those tests, my '89 Taurus failed HC. Somebody (can't
remember who) told me that driving hard (and blowing out the HCs) would help it
pass. So the second time, just before the test, I got out on the highway and did
90 mph (back when that was the legal limit ;-) for 10 minutes, got off at an exit,
and same thing on the return. Came back, pulled into the garage, and passed the
test. If that doesn't work, try turning it up to 120...

what is with Carlos & TV listings ;-) Jackass is on at 10pm on Sunday _night_
when the F1 race will be long over. I believe that perhaps Johnny Knoxville &
his merry band of Jackasses somehow went along for the ride for the Gumball or
perhaps they are re-running TV footage from the UK, where the event was heavily
covered.

there is an article on the Gumball in the July issue of "Car" as well. I'll
bring it along to the wrenching session tomorrow.

also finds MTV a bit much, far too much bad music...

It's kinda funny. I'm fairly impervious to most Italian exotica, and I
know I don't fit too well in most (I'm just not fond of wearing the
windshield.) I got over my Pantera phase sometime around my college years.
The Ferrari 360 gets me kinda interested, but not enough to go out and
start shopping collapsed dot-com parking lots.

A digression: The vast majority of those of us who are happily married,
completely and totally whipped and domesticated, still have to admit that
somewhere, someplace, there's probably some woman for whom, for whatever
reason (raw physical attraction, or reminiscence, or just a sudden
emotional or intellectual synchronization) we'd do something utterly and
truly stupid and destructive to what we'd otherwise construe our lives to
be.

The Miura kinda gets there for me. Someday I may actually have to subject
myself to that level of abuse.

John.

Maybe 500,000 regular M10's but not near as many EVO II's. ;)
