I guess the presence of a car like that in World Challenge is kinda at the
discretion of the organizers; if they don't have a field jam-packed with
high-buck teams anyone with a competition license and a car not too far
outside the class rules can get in.

So, when are YOU going to be running WC GT? ;) I'm waiting for Griggs to
finish my damn cage so I can run AI next year - I'm not sure yet whether
I'm going to end up as the last of the low-buck cars in AI or the first of
the high-buck cars...

He put one foot wrong, locking his brakes into Two early in the session.
Otherwise, from what I saw he ran a really clean event.

Then there was the blue C4 who was apexing Two seemingly about halfway up
the hill, correcting with a big stomp on the right pedal, a dose of
opposite lock and a hearty HiYo Silver on the way to Three. Whosoever that
was, I'm amazed that individual stayed on the track for the entire event.

Subject: [uuc] <E30> Major Work. Done!

Gruppe:

I finished up quite a bit of work on the 88 iS.

1. New gas tank. Used. $95. Fixed the leak. The
drain plug needed quite a bit of torque to stop
dripping, but the original tank plug was pretty tight
too so I think that is fine.

2. New brake hard lines. $60. All rear parts
including t-connection. Makes me wonder if we have
3-channel ABS, since the rear brake line is just one,
branching to both wheels even though there are four
sensors.

3. New parking brakes (cables and shoes). Used. $60.
At last I have them after 3 years.

4. New rotors. I painted the hats! $40.

5. New SS brake lines. BMP Earl's with the sheaths.
$130.

6. New brake fluid. Castrol LMA. I like it. I think
I'll stick with that over ATE Super Blue. I used the
Jim Powell brake bleeder and that thing rocks! Don
Udel was kind enough to come around with his.

7. New semi-trailing arm bushings. Can't remember how
much I paid as I bought them 2 years ago and only put
them in now. This made a HUGE difference even though
the old ones _looked_ OK. The car is very tight now.
I really like it. I'm going to do this to the iC as
well to take up the slack it has.

8. New ICV. $85. Idle is as it should be. Temp
sensitive and then steady at around 600 RPM.

9. New oil - Castrol 20W50. In the GA heat this
should be fine.

I'm up to ears in car work, but eventually all this
will get to my WWW page, along with some more stuff
I'm doing to the car. Many thanks to George Cole and
Don Udel for continuous assistance during the 4 weeks
the car was up on stands.

Don't know about the mains, but Jim Powell had the rod
bearings on his E30 325i done w/o removing the engine
or anything. If the engine does blow up, you could go
the M20 route or even the Z3 route. The Z3 engine is
the same weight as the S14 with the all aluminium
block and could be made to produce 200 HP.

How's this. Look at the hinges on the front of your hood when it's up. It
pivots around a pair of hollow tubes flared at the ends. Drill out one end
of each and you can press them out easily - replace those with a clevis pin
of appropriate length and girth. Cut the hose to your windshield washer
jets and buy a connector for that. Slip the clip for the hood support strut
at the hood (throw away the plastic buffer parts). Now with that
disconnected and pushed back down to it's closed position (it'll stay there)
lower the hood back down. Pull the clevis pins you put in and lift the hood
off.

To replace the hood just set it on in that laying down position and replace
the clevis pins, raise it and clip the hood strut back on, and connect the
two parts of your windshield washer hose.

With the hood off it's a simple matter to get to things. Pulling the entire
engine is very straightforward with the tranny still attached. I had to
raise my car onto jackstands so there'd be enough room to swing the tranny
down then up and out. Ooohh. Look at all that nice access to things to be
cleaned, removed, replaced, uprated... You get the picture.

Neil,

How closely did you inspect the chain and sprockets? It's possible the
chain is stretched or has a broken link on one side of that double row.
Perhaps you've tossed a tooth or two from a sprocket? I hope not but that's
cheaper than the next set of options on an S38.

Jay,

My 73 Volvo 1800ES recently failed on high HC at idle on the Delaware test.
The tester (an actual State of Delaware DMV employee) had me hold it at
2,000 rpm for about a minute and then retest at idle. No problem passing.

Been there done that on my 318ti. It is a long story and involves removing
the sunroof panel and lots of cusing. Basically it is a couple of small
plastic parts that grab each other in a different way depending on if you
tilt or open. I may be able to find my note, I had a computer crash. You
will need a good manual too.

The sunroof on my E36 M3 (9/95 build) has developed a problem that I'm
hoping someone will be able to help me with. The black fabric coved
panel/liner no longer is attached to the metal sliding roof panel. At
times, it will not move forward when the sunroof is closed. If I then push
it forward by hand and then tilt the roof up and then back down, the fabric
liner will move forward and backward with the metal roof correctly. All is
fine until the roof is tilted again, and then the fabric panel disconnects
itself again.

I know this is an akward explanation of my situation. I hope someone has
had some sort of similar experience that they can share.

Thanks in advance!

Rob

Subject: [uuc] [E36] Valentine 1 Remote Hard Wire

I'm thinking of mounting and hard wiring my V1's remote display module in
the instrument cluster area, or possibly on top of the steering column trim
immediately behind the wheel. The V1 itself will be clipped on to the
passenger sun visor, with power coming from the sunroof control panel.

Wiring into the sunroof panel is well documented, but I'd also need to fish
wiring under the headliner and down the driver side A-pillar to get to the
instrument cluster area.

Has anyone done this on an E36, and/or have useful advice about taking off
the A-pillar trim and fishing the wire?

TIA,

Neil
