With the '91 your client is looking at, I really doubt there is much of a difference at all. Diagnosis of anything electronic requiring a MODIC or aftermarket scan tool is not a problem. The biggest problem would be finding a shop or tech not scared of a "strange" car. Every single part on the car can be ordered through any BMW dealer just like a US M5's parts. Everything is on the dealer's ETK parts CD and they can put it on their next parts order. Actually, besides the motor and a couple of accessory parts and other small details, all of the brakes, suspension, and drivetrain components are available on US cars (particularly the later 540i). Emissions: Federalizing these cars regarding emissions is still somewhat of a closely-guarded secret. Supposedly a place out in Ohio is doing it decently with a simple cold-start lean-out module (otherwise the emissions are fine), but beware any car with the wrong catalytic converter or hacked-up exhaust. Worth: Considering that most of the Euro models brought in are the 3.8l models, the Euro cars offer more motor, more options, alternate (usually better) interior materials, and colors not seen on US M5s. Generally a clean Euro car will sell for 50% - 100% more than an equivalent condition US car. US 3.6l M5s were only brought in from '91-'93, and the Euro 3.8l models were '93-'95, so this skews direct-year price comparisons slightly. Nevertheless, clean US M5s sell from $17K - $27K. Clean (and some not so clean!) Euro M5s sell from $30K - $40K. WARNING: I would never buy any car without inspecting it in person. This is particularly true of Euro cars. From how a European explained it to me, over there many people view cars as disposable. They get the ever-lovin' snot beat out of them in a very short time from being driven very hard. The result is cars that look beautiful but are mechanically ragged-out. A good mechanical inspection (including compression test) can seperate the good from the bad and save you a lot of headaches. Another reason to do a personal inspection is so you know you're not buying a total rat. You hear horror stories of individuals buying cars advertised as "perfect", getting them shipped over, and then discovering the "perfect" parts are limited to the ashtray and the replacement radiator from the major front-end accident. Ignore the three colors of paint, there's no extra charge... - - Rob Levinson '94 M5 Touring 3.8 http://www.robertlevinson.com > From: "Alex Cagann" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: [uuc] <E34 M5> questions re: euro vs US > > I am gathering information for a client regarding the E34 M5 cars. I've driven when too tired before, as I'm sure we all have at one time or another. I find that changing the CD works in a pinch, but best is to find a rest area, crack a window, and doze. Your body won't let you fall fast asleep in that sort of situation. A 10-minute, light snooze can keep you awake and alert for several hours of driving. Driving by sleeping truckers is scary. Don't be one of them. Getting there alive and well is worth a 10-minute penalty. If the emissions are correctly dealth with during federalization, you should have zero problems even in CA. 3. The value of these cars is perceived by such a small group of people that you should have no trouble.
