Bear in mind, if wind conditions exist they do not allow you to tow a car or boat. No exceptions. Then you get to discover Rt. 130 and the Old US 1. Take 95 to 287 to 684 (did they rename it)? You want to be on I 84 going across CT. There are some nasty hills for towing, live with it. The other alternative is taking I95 to 91. That sucks because there is plenty of night time paving and road repair going on. If humanly possible, you want to leave the Metro NY area by 3PM. This gets you past Hartford at a decent time slot. In the Metro Boston area take the old Rt. 128. They've renamed so many sections of it I forget what it is called from the Mass Pike north. This area is murder from 3PM-7PM. Then take I93 and you're almost there. I just made the trip from Boston-Key West a week ago (1630 miles, 27 hrs20 minutes, including a rest stop plus fuel). in a Ryder Truck. This info is pretty current. And all the tie ups were on the North Bound side. Lets start with race oils. As correctly stated by James, mono grade race oils are devoid of "thickening" additive packages so a 30wt race oil is simply a 30wt base stock with no additive package. However, any 60wt oil IS heavy - even in a true sythetic like Red Line - and typically specified for extreme applications such as alcohol fuelled drag cars. In race applications oil is selected to complement other particular engine components and build specifications - particularly bearing clearances. The tighter the clearance, the thinner the oil specified. There is ABSOLUTELY no truth in the suggestion that "American engine builders use the thickest oils they can buy (usually Kendall SAE30W) on their pushrod V-8 engines to compensate for stiff springs and heavy valvetrains (lifters, pushrods, rockers, big valves)". There are a number of factors that influence oil selection, including internal clearances, expected operating temperatures and expected shear loads. Kendall 30wt is not a particulaly "heavy" oil - many long time pushrod builders still specifiy 50wt minerals from Pennzoil and others in the mistaken belief that heavy oil always = protection. Ask the many Red Line race users about the difference a true sythetic makes to protection, longevity and internal friction. Now, on to Mobil 1. Did you know that this oil is NOT made from a true synthetic base stock?? It is actually dino oil in disguise!! Which is one of the reasons why Mobil was involved in a court case in the not-too-distant past in which it was LEGALLY determined that they are allowed to market a number of their products as "sythetic" - because they have undergone an elaborate transformation. However, the truth is that the base material is still crude oil. From my limited understanding of chemistry I believe what they do is turn the base stock into a gas then turn it back into a liquid - ask a chemist how, not me. The point is, a duck is still a duck even after its been roasted. Having said what I have, and read what everyone else has, I'm still none the wiser as to why BMW would specify "glue" for these engine...... - ----- Original Message ----- From: James Muskopf <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, July 28, 2001 12:47 AM Subject: Re: [uuc] synth oil query > > From: "Kim Henshaw" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > Subject: Re: [uuc] Re: synth oil query > > > > Any reason why BMW would specify glue for these engines??? > > 10W60 isn't that thick. Plus, you get a very in depth view into how young female minds continuously malfunctions. Who needs a lambo to impress chicks anyway. Most chicks wouldn't know the differnece anywho. Most I know can't tell the difference between a 4-banger z3 or a 1st gen boxter, but they're impressed. Can't tell you how many times I've been asked why I would spend more on a 13yr old (emphasis on OLD) M3 than I could've bought a z3 for, or why I would keep the m3 after buying (a soooo nice to chicks) new SAAB. Oh well, just have to keep fun stuff separate from women anywho..... hehe, somebody's going to be offened. and why would anyone buy a lambo anyway. Ferrari'ss are better built, better performers and so much more classy. i would choose a 355spider over a diablo. chicks dig convertibles....
