I have a 1990 e34 535I WITH ~100,000 miles on it, just
about 3-4 days ago my speedometer quit working,
everything else on the dash board works perfectly
fine, RPM, temp, and oil all works as normal, no
service or unusual lights on, just the speedometer
failed. i have seen signs of life, but usually quits
10 min into the drive when it does come back alive. i
live in Portland Oregon, the temp here in the summer
is ~80-90 but just this week is ~60-70, so i'm
thinking that COULD be a possibility...

Subject: [uuc] <E34> M5 No Start. Puzzling Sparks?

Gruppe:

I removed and replaced the chain tensioner on the 92
M5 again today. There was some unmelted Vaseline in
there that I cleaned out. I also corrected the
orientation of the spring. The only electrical things
I removed were three spark plug wires. When I put it
all back together the car did not start. Here are my
observations:

1. Car cranks very easily and smootly. Seems not to
have any load, but I have not experienced prolonged
no-start cranking before so this could be normal.
Timing marks on cams still line up. No chain noise
while cranking. Very nice and smooth.

2. I pulled the plugs and they were flooded with gas
so the fuel is definitely getting there. The gaps had
gas in them when I pulled the plugs. Cleaned and put
them back.

3. Cranked with plugs out and Don Udel found both
intake and exhaust pulses. No compression gauge, but
they 'felt' about the same. Crappy test, I know, but
that was the best I could do.

4. Put timing light on spark plug wires and found the
1 and 2 wires were firing really slow (1-2 Hz) while 6
was firing rapidly (4-6 Hz). Guess frequencies
obviously. Very funky indeed! I am totally
puzzled by this to be honest. Any ideas? Certainly,
the spark is getting to the cylinders. If cranking is
about 300 RPM, the frequency of spark should be 2.5 Hz
(1/2 revs). Could the timing light pickup have caught
interference from other wires on 1 and 2 as there are
a lot of wires there and not on 5, 6 and there are
just the 5 and 6 wires at the end? If so, why were
they slower and not faster for having picked up more
pulses? Can you explain this to me? I only removed
and replaced 3 spark plug wires and did nothing else
electrical to the car.

5. I though the alarm system may somehow be
responsible, but the alarm lamp does go out when I
shut the hood and crank and the still does not start.

6. The crank position sensor, etc., are all connected
OK. Obviously, I had to remove and reconnect the
plugs to get the valve cover off so that is rechecked
too.

Any comments, suggestions, BTDT, etc., are welcome.

Subject: [uuc] E36M3 running rich.....O2 sensor?

My 95 M3(7/94 build date ) has performed flawlessly for 5 yrs with only tune
ups and oilchange things done to it .....'til tonight . I note a sudden
shift in the color/appearance of the exh pipes at rear of car .
Went from always clean and dry-looking to having wooly black deposits
....which have already been deposited onto rear of car as small flecks in
the 10mile drive home .NO indication on the OBC..no numbers flashing , no
virgins singing ,no significant change on the famous miles-per meter.

Am I looking at the 'classic' O2 sensor failure here ? Didnt feel any
different driving home -but plugged highways preclude redlining it anyway .

What's the Ford Mustang/Bosch O2 sensor-part number I need ? Got it round
heah someplace but not to hand right now .

LoL!

Ok, Ok. This weekend, I'm going to try to locate my GTech and do some real
testing of my own.

0-60 and 1/4 mile. Two runs each way, maybe three.

First with the intake & chip.
Second with just the chip (minus intake).
Third returned to stock (minus chip, minus intake).

I'll try to second the data, one way or another.

At least, if my etaBeast doesn't blow up first :)

Subject: [uuc] brake problem...again

I posted this a few days ago....and got zero response. I did forget
to mention one thing so maybe you were confused. My work resulted
in absolutely no change in braking performance.

Here's what I posted:

Hello all....hoping somebody can shed some light on my brake
concerns. My car is an 88 325iX. My problem consists of a
mushy pedal on the first couple pumps. This is accompanied
by a quick pull to the right before the things even out.

This led me to believe I had some air in addition to a sticking
piston on the front left. I spent a good portion of the day today
taking everthing apart to pop the pistons out and clean things up.
To my surprise there was no rust or corrosion on either side up
front. The pads have roughly half their life left. Once everything
was put back together I bled the fluid without the aid of a power
bleeder.

I fear that my master cylinder is going bad....although I don't think
it would maintain pressure as it does after a couple pumps if that
were the case. Maybe I need to use a pressure bleeder? Could
there be air in the ABS??

Thanks again.

<Subject: [uuc] Kumho tires

Gang,

Does anybody have any real-life experiences with Kumho tires? I've been
researching them and they appear to be the deal of the decade in terms
of
price/performance. 205 55 ZR16 are $72/tire at Tirerack, as opposed to
$160/tire for the Yokohama AVS Sports that are on my car now. I have
absolutely LOVED the Yokos, but the Kumhos, at less than half the price,
are
just too hard to pass up. Any opinions?

Thanks,
Jim Davis>

I have in the past two months bought two sets, one for my '90 325is and
one for my '95 540i/6. I love them. In the wet they are really good,
and dry traction is pretty good as well. They don't squeal around
corners either. I can't say about tread life yet, but otherwise I am
glad I bought them.

I am didn't notice any dieefence in mine when it let go... other than that
blasted check engine light blazing away at night.

I am using a Bosch 13275 for my four wire sensor. I paid about 40 bucks for
it at the local AutoZone. Cut and splice your way to a cleaner car!

This is a suggestion -
BUT MAYBE NOT FOR THOSE WHO ARE TOWING:
If you are planning to go through Hartford, my route:
North from Hartford on I-91 through Massachusets into
Vermont to Parlee, then east on NH 25 to I-93, then
north on I-93 to exit 28, then east on NH 49 to
Waterville Valley.
This avoids the Mass Pike, the approach to Boston, I-495,
route 128, etc. Get a good map - my guess is that it
a) is faster, even though the NH 25 route runs ESE, and
b) is a few miles shorter. I've never been on NH 25, but I
would guess that it's fun.

I've been considering going to Oktoberfest. Several
things are making me think twice:

First and foremost: Can my baby (the car) make it?!!!
2) Can I get off work (from a job I haven't even
started yet, lol)?
3) Will I have the money to stay in a hotel over
there?
4) Will I be able to get a hotel over there?
5) Will I be able to find someone to go with me?

And maybe one or two other things that I can't think
off the top of my head. Now, to the point. . .

Since I'm considering going, and since fellow Cajun
Harmon Fischer jumped into the conversation, I figure
I'll ask. . .

Is there anyone in:

a) North Louisiana or a surrounding area that would
like to caravan?
or
b) Louisiana or a surrounding area that would like to
meet me somewhere not very far from Louisiana to
caravan?

I'm bringing the V1. We'll have to keep the speeds
below 100; I have a 528e ;-)

Peace,

Quarter Million Miles on an auto tranny?

I just rolled 261,000 and still shifting as good as it
did when it rolled out of the factory. Same engine, too.

Now if I can find some wood to knock on, otherwise it
will start slipping tomorrow! :-)

Mike, my guess is that the transmission will fail. I've never heard anyone
say that their BMW automatic transmission lasted a quarter million miles,
but they say that about the engines all the time.

Subject: [uuc] <E30> Mysterious Stalling

I would appreciate some troubleshooting advice. Our 1988 325iC has some
sort of intermittent problem that occurs every couple of weeks. My
SWMBO has lost faith in the car and won't drive it any more. I
experienced the problem first-hand today for the first time. I was
driving the car and suddenly you have no power, the engine is totally
dead. The tach goes to 0 (with the clutch out and the engine turning
over), the idiot lights all come on, the engine cranks fine, but no
fire. Wait five minutes and it starts and runs fine. Doesn't seem to
be load, heat, or RPM dependent. The last time it happened to her, I
arrived to rescue her, jumped in the car, started it and drove it home.
I found the situation much more amusing than she did. Any ideas where
to start looking? It is hard to troubleshoot something which occurs so
infrequently. Thanks for any and all ideas.
