I got mine at S-G Imports. They run about $5-6 per set and install in a jiffy (peel and stick - -- except if you use your pad sensors, in which case maybe snip and peel and stick). Anyway, they're simple. I have them on my street pads and get zero squeal. Carlos Lopez tried them on the front of his 91 M3 and IIRC noticed an improvement (reduction) in squeal -- he'd have to say whether those were street or track pads. I have never tried the goo, but have to believe that the shims at least work longer, if not better. Good luck. I know someone locally who took Euro delivery of his 330xi & had the overheating issue & after some discusssion got get them (the dealer and/or BMW NA he didn't say which) to extend the warranty & service plan on the car to four years over the standard three. I would certainly have thought that they should not have let you take delivery of a car that had an outstanding recall on it or should have at least told you about it & given you the option to delay deliver until they could get parts. I suspect that BMW has a bit of egg on their face of late with the electrical fire-related recall on X5's & other cars & now the overheating issues. I think that for the last month running there has been a different BMW recall story in AutoWeek.... Leonard" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Strut bolts To remove strut top nuts, if you are going to replace the struts anyway, just grab the shaft with a giant set of channel locks through the spring coils, and loosen them a little before you compress the spring. This will damage the shaft, so only do it to struts scheduled for the trash can. Once you get them compressed, thy should be easy enough to hold with vice grips, or a small open end wrench while you remove the elastic stop nut with a box wrench. Another trick for removing the top strut retainer cap, where the shaft goes through which is usually rusted on, is to cut thru the sides of the cap with ab abrasive cutoff wheel, very carefully just going into the threads slightly, then heat, penetrating oil, and a couple of pipe wrences. I hear a vise and an impact hammer will work too. For a detailed how to on a strut job, , see the FAQ I wrote at http://www.eskimo.com/~dalus/bmw/ftp/bmw/FAQ.12 section : 12.4.5 Re: 7er struts DIY I actually found my writing on the FAQ's one day , and was amazed anybody saves this drivel I write . I wrote it back in the 1996 days of the Welty Digest. Good luck, Dave Leonard Changed struts in BMW 1602, 2002 (a few times) BMW 735i, 325i, VW Rabbit, Honda Prelude, VW Dasher, Fiat 128, and they were ALL a PITA! The 2002 can be done without removing the tire..undo the top bolts, leave everything else connected, push the top mount under the fender lip, and rock and roll! The $35.00 strut compresser has sure earned its keep in the last 20 years! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 13:30:11 -0500 From: Luis Marques <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] <E36> front strut shaft bolt You can also use a regular 1/2" drive 22mm socket. Put a vice grip real tight around it while you go at the strut shaft with an allen bit and a small extension thru the square opening in the socket. Yes.<g> They're sort of both a street/track pad but squealy as hell nonetheless. I don't see how the shims would fly off at least not on the inner pad, the shim is mounted around the clip so it would prevent them from flying off. I don't see them flying off the outer pad either, it's not like the pads are floating loose in there anyway. Street pads already have these shims installed, at least my Pagids did and so do Hawk HPS. I added them to my Hawk HP Plus (my autox pads) and cut down the squealing by about 60-70% at the least, I also use these on the street and I'm not giving them up. They still squeal when the outside temperature is high, like 85+ deg. F days, but much less than before. I wouldn't use them on strict track pads, heck if you ain't squealing you ain't sheeeeeiiitt... ;-) Carlos 91 M3 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
