I left Canada somewhat before home computers, (38 years next month), and two questions come to mind. 1) When you are sending an email from Canada to the UUC (Underlining, Umlauts, & Commas) Digest, do you use a Spellchequer? 2) When that light goes bright on your Canadian BMW's,xxx,BMWs',xxx,on the dash of your BMW from Canada, is it called an Engine Cheque Light? Hmmmmmm!!! Enquring minds want to know. What the heck is an Umlaut? I know! I know! White: To which I can only add E. B. White's, "Get the little book! Get the little book! Get the little book!" That should also answer Tamir's question about punctuation when a quotation falls at the end of a sentence. Three things are worthy of note: Strunk claims that the pronominal possessives (whaa?) hers, its, theirs, yours, and oneself have no apostrophe. He also states that Burns's poems and Charles's friend is correct. Perhaps the most important thing Strunk says is "It is an old observation that the best writers sometimes disregard the rules of rhetoric. When they do so, however, the reader will usually find in the sentence some compensating merit, attained at the cost of the violation. Unless he is certain of doing as well, he will probably do best to follow the rules." Thanks, Rob, for getting me to find my copy and open it again. Now, can I, will I, - perhaps - relax my sphincter and drift unconsionably back into my slovenly ways? Probably. Until someone adjusting their breaks is directed to Neil's most excellent cite. Sight? Here is an example illustrating my point: "Hopefully, this thread will end soon" means that this thread will be hopeful as it ends (nonsense). "This thread will end, hopefully soon" means one is hopeful of a quick end to this thread. - -- Ron Katona - hopeful ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 00:53:31 -0400 From: Ken Weingold <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Re: <rant> apostrophe abuse Rob Levinson wote: > b) Possessive plurals: When talking about a possession shared by many > of the same thing, we run into a little bit of confusion. I said "yes". - -Ken '91 M3 - -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] AIM: ScopusFest ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 01:22:33 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [uuc] Re: [uucdigest] V3 #4102 In a message dated 8/5/01 10:33:26 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: << Hi a while ago, I found that my 328ic with Pirelli Pilot 235 40 17's (of 3 months age/5,000 mostly hwy mileage..hey, doesn't everybody say that on Ebay?) had very little rear tread left when I did a rear to front rotation. Sorry for the cross post. I don't remember which list I read this on. Someone was looking for a cheap E30? This might be the one. I looked at it today. I saw the car listed in News On Wheels here in Baton Rouge, La. I just tried to pull it up on a search though and couldn't find it? It's listed last week and this week? The car is a 1990 325i. It's a four door, 5spd, grey w/ grey leather interior. The owner is the second owner. The car has 102K miles on it. It's had the right front fender replaced. It has not had any maintenance done on it in a while from what I could tell. They are asking $3700 for it. The phone number is 225-928-4551 The sign on it says it was used in some movie or other. I didn't really pay any attention to it. It needs work, I have neither the time, tools, or place to work on it so I passed. Since I'm cross posting already I'd like to plug an MGB that I'm listing on EBay for a friend. This is a nice car, but I'm not into MG's. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=593929956 Thanks for looking, Jacob...looking for a cheap E30 himself. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 05 Aug 2001 23:02:31 -1000 From: Jay G <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] my track experience, well not really... hey gruppe...i attended what i thought was going to be my first actual track event, as opposed to my usual autocrosses...it was an event hosted by a local subaru dealership at the local track (for new WRXs)...and volunteers would get track time at the end of the day...i thought (along with others) that the track would be "open" at the end of the day, but we were running an autocross on the track...if that makes any sense...well, the subies ran it that way...then volunteers had their crack at it...cones were set up to slow the drivers down, as well as insurance costs...there were lane changes and slaloms on the straights...and there was no passing or continuous runs...just a single timed lap...anywhoo, on my last run, a newbie comes up to me and asks for a ride...so i tell him okay...out of the gate, i accelerate with my 97 M3 and we go towards a slalom...next thing i know, we're sideways facing a guardrail...so i correct, and we end up facing the guardrail on the other side...it all happened really fast, and my buddies told me later that they couldnt believe that it was me who did that...i ask the newbie if he's okay and he says he's fine..so i continue on the run, and take it easy on the corners... i neglected to take into consideration the weight of my passenger on my run...i didnt think that it was going to affect the handling of my car to any significant extent, but it did...i was sooo thankful that it happened on the WIDE straight, b/c if i was pushing it thru a turn, i am certain i would've crashed into a wall...on the rest of the run, i slowed way more than i usually would have, and i could feel the car start to rotate way more easier...the passenger was a pretty big dude, i'm guessing about 250 lbs...i know, i know...some of you guys are saying, "how can you forget to consider that that amount of weight wont affect your handling?" but i didnt think of him as 250lbs, i thought of him as passenger...so PLEASE learn from my experience, that when you add a passenger, the dynamics of the car changes, so take it a little more easier out there...on a side note, a regular autocrosser did smack his less-than-1-month-old WRX into a wall :( he was okay, but his car suffered significant damage to the right rear... jay <- extremely happy with my unscathed M3... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 06:57:42 -0500 From: "Karl Zemlin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RE: [uuc] Oh Gawd it's the dad-blamed languidge police I'm sure you meant to say "dad-burned".
