My .02 worth. The Polks are exellent for the money. I have heard the Kappa's and they don't have the range you need in an IC at highway speed. I replaced all the spaeker in the wife's car. (88 325ica) and it made a HUGE difference. Well of course it would with those old dried out paper speakers. I spent around a grand for all of them and am quite happy. I was one of the original charter buyers of the JTD shield, but I gave up using it a long time ago. It's simple and well enough made but: - - Can't use the stock porkchops without problematic modifications - - Poor fit on my car (had to redrill several holes) - - Doesn't have the aero profile of the original (assumption is that BMW made it that way for a purpose) - - Sometimes clangs against the radiator - - Expensive for what it is at $160. I ended up running with no shield for quite a while. Now that I've figured out how to keep the stock part from blowing off I've reverted to that. For the $160 cost of the JTD shield you could buy all new BMW plastic parts plus the tools and supplies needed to eliminate the problem once and for all. But feel free to show the sincerity of your disagreement by buying mine! FOR SALE: JTD under-radiator aluminum shield for E36 M3 coupe. New cost from ECIS is $160 plus shipping. Yours for $100, shipped via UPS ground anywhere in lower 48. Keep track of everything here: http://www.americanlemans.com/ The victory at Portland puts BMW on top of the manufacturer standings. They are very slow on updating the standings part of the ALMS site, but otherwise it's the best way to keep current, as Speedvision sometimes delays broadcasts of the races. scott - -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2001 3:48 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [uuc] Said/Stuck win Hey everyone, How come I haven't seen anything about the Portland win in the Milner PTG M3 this past weekend?...ok to "crow" by now I hope<g>. There may be a slight reduction in hydroplaning resistance. Asymetric tires will loose some dry handling. Some tires, specifically the special ones for the Acura NSX are built with carcass ply steer specific for each corner of the car. Here, putting the wrong tires on may cause a slight pull, or a steering offset, but again, no damage. Over the weekend on Sunday, I and my family were stranded outside Austin, TX (in 106 degree weather) over the weekend when the circlip that holds the shift linkage to the transmission gave up the ghost.. I was able to post a plea for help to the bimmer.org list and Ritter Vonalli, John (?) and Jeff Adolph in Austin all came to my aid with calls for assistance in less than three hours.. At Ritter's suggestion I had the car towed to Terry Sayther's shop in Austin on Monday morning. Terry et al replaced the knuckle that attaches the linkage to the transmission (it was destroyed when the shifter rod flew out) and got the car back to me Monday evening so that I and my family could make the 3 hour drive home.. I have recently had some miserable experiences with independents and dealers (John Roberts BMW in particular) that are in my opinion not qualified to work on the E30 M3. I am happy to report that Terry and his gang are top notch!! The E30 M3 owners in Austin should be ecstatic to be able to go to a shop where the owner and another employee (Chris) own our rare machine. A hearty thanks goes to Terry and his crew for their assistance for getting me on the road so quickly.... Here's what I learned. No converter required on my system - I have preamp outputs. I used the lowest-cost Monster Cable patch cables (Interlink Jr?). I have two preamp outputs from the head unit (Blaupunkt Nashville). I have an Alpine 35 watt*4 power amp for the main speakers. A cheapo 50 watt*2 amp(Phase Linear PL-200) for my subwoofer (Coustic DR-326 - dual 6"). With 3 innies on the amps, and two outies on the head units I needed to split one of the outies. If I split the front channel to the main amp AND the sub amp (low pass set to ON @ 120 Hz) the front speakers sounded like poo-poo. I ended up splitting the rear-channel outputs to the for the front and rear speakers on the main amp and balancing the speakers with the gain controls on the amp (no fader control anymore). The Sub amp needed to be on it's own outputs. Since I don't have a real crossover - only a low pass on the sub amp, the lower midrange/upper bass was real boomy. I ended up adding a second low-pass on the sub amp ($20 from Radioshack) 'cuz I already had it. I think I have that one set on 90 Hz also, but the combined cutoff is a nice balance for my system. The lower power sub amp works OK for moderate volumes because the subwoofer is mounted to the rear deck and fires into the cabin instead of being isolated in the trunk and having to transmit sound through steel and insulation. If your amp is being used for a subwoofer, you want the LOW PASS filter on. The frequency will depend on your other speakers and your personal taste. If you want to do the job right (my wife hates spending money on tunes, so I had to go cheap) get an active crossover with high and low pass for all the speakers. I think these are in the $75-$100 range. Considering any high-end car stereo will run preamp-level through patch cables from the head unit to the trunk I have to believe that you should be able to achieve good sound with that setup - and you already have the cables. Hope that helps. - -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Fuerst, Robert C. (Chris) Sent: Tuesday, August 07, 2001 8:05 AM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Cc: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: [uuc] stereos in general - conversion theory While Ofest is in progress I thought I'd ask another stereo question. I still have not put in my alpine unit, speakers, amps, etc. I have a California Profile amp for my sub. It's rated at 600W RMS at .07% THD. (bridged) http://profileusa.com/calamps.htm http://profileusa.com/calamps.htm#spec2 The last time I installed it never seemed anywhere near what I felt it should have sounded like. My sub is a 15" - I know it's rated at 450 RMS (I can get the specs) The main problem is that my Alpine head unit only has speaker outputs So I have to run them through a converter by audiolink. http://www.linkmeup.com/pl2.html So, if your with me, should I run the speaker wires all the way to the trunk and "convert" them near the amp. Or, convert them to RCA as soon as possible and run RCA to the trunk. The latter route is what I did on the last install and I was not happy with the results. And yes I have 2 - 20' patch cables. Good ones too. I forget the price (thank god). I think the first route may be better since the higher speaker outputs are less prone to degradation over a long distance? Another question is, should I turn the high-pass/low-pass switch to high, low, or off. (high pass passes along the highs?) And should I set the variable crossover freq. to the highest setting (130HZ) or the lowest (40HZ) or somewhere in the middle depending on how it sounds?
