Compression has very little effect on emissions. A hotter cam will increase HC at idle, but if your catalyst is newish and at operating temperature, and the EGO and EFI is in top condition, there should be no problem. Currently backordered. Thanks to the replies on my E36 stereo installation questions yesterday. I finally got the connector off the old fashioned way - more force. Now that I see how it actually functions, it all makes sense. Consensus seems to be that I didn't need the converter, but it's in there and everything is working properly. The amazing part is that I was able to stuff everything behind the stereo. Can anybody tell me how to identify my factory head unit, now that it is out and powerless? The car's use will be both short trips in our Dorf as well as several 50 minute commutes to the big city each week. Kinda like an auto but stick is fine if it works like it should. I know they're very different cars, but other than size and fuel economy are the 2 somewhat comparable?. Would a 7er be more maintenance? I know this requires very subjective opinions, but would appreciate some thoughts on this. Also, it seems most of these are located in Texas or the Durham/Charlotte area. Frankly, usually anything from the years mentioned from my area (Wisconsin) already has the onset of rust. Would like to avoid this. There is no memorial service planned. The family has asked that we tell anyone wishing to do something in Michel's memory to please make a contribution to the BMW CCA Foundation Driving School Program. Both Margot, Michel's ex-wife, and Danielle indicated that the Club was such an enormous part of Michel's life, they feel it most appropriate that his memory live on through contributions to a program having a primary goal of saving lives. There's problably 80lb in weight difference between the two. The last 3 digits of the BMW designation, 560 or 440, are the Nm (x10) of torque that the trans can reliably handle. BMW decided that the 5HP30 (560) was over kill for the V8, so replaced it with the 5HP24 (440) >> Do the two transmissions look alike from the outside? Everything I read says my car ('97 740iL) should have the 5HP24, but all the pictures I see of the 5HP30 are identical to the one in my car. (I already have the bently manual but I'm looking for more of a >walk through ho-to). Check out Racepad.com. There's a tech article on brake pad changing; changing rotors isn't too much more involved beyond that. >And, if I need to re-do the brakes... should I just (as Mike Miller suggests >in the last roundel) upgrade to euro M3 rotors (cross drilled) and quality >pads? or something else? Well, I disagree with Mike Miller. I don't think the extra cost of Euro cross-drilled rotors is justified for street driving (even debatable for track driving). But they do look nice :-) I'd recommend a set of OEM Brembo rotors. They can be had relatively inexpensively from a variety of online sources (I usually get mine from Steve D'G at The Ultimate Garage). I don't mind brake dust, so I run stock Jurid pads. If dust is a concern, others can probably offer suggestions. Just remember, there are 3 aspects to brake pads: 1. Stopping ability 2. Noise/quietness 3. Dust Pick any 2 :-) Hope that helps, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 JP/A5 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Jan 2003 14:29:16 -0500 From: "Eurowerks" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] Alternator placement... Has anyone found yellow H1 bulbs or replacement lenses (either from Bosch, BMW, or aftermarket) that would change my 1998 328i sendan's driving lights into true fog lights. I know Phillips makes a yellow H1 bulb but it is only 55w. 2. Last week there was a thread on ABS vs. Traction Control and one post talked about disabling the TC butterfly so only rear breaking would take place. Is this easy to disable temporarily to test the differences and put back if necessary? Any tips or comments is appreciated. I know Phillips makes a yellow H1 >bulb but it is only 55w. Last time I checked, the difference between a fog light and a driving light was the shape of the pattern, not the color of the bulb. As far as I know, the US E36s that came with auxiliary lights all came with fog lights, not driving lights. The light pattern is wider and more diffuse than a driving light. NO change in bulb color or wattage is going to change that. Also, going to a much brighter light sounds like it's going to just produce more light for the fog to reflect back into the driver's eyes. Of course, all of this is moot if you're just doing this for appearance. In fact, even Brett (whom you quote) noted - getting better efficiency is no reason to move the alternator to the back; you can do that with different pulleys. The other reasons, taken together, which you claim are unimportant, indicate an advantage.
