I don't entirely agree with you although I feel there is some merit in your "power" comment. After reading all of the responses, I really think it had to do with any and all four of Brett's comments. If there was zero power gain (or the same power loss from running an alternator in either location), I still think it would have been done for the other reasons (weight distribution, higher reliability).
