As such, I'm looking for a good radar detector to *ahem* speed up the cross-country trip. Unfortunately, I don't feel comfortable dropping $400 on a Valentine 1, even though I am fully convinced of its superiority. Is there a detector at $200 or less that is the "next best thing"? It must have X, Ka, laser, and front/rear capabilities. Once I get settled (physically and financially), I'll probably sell it on eBay and go for the V1. OTOH, perhaps I could borrow a lonely V1 (for a modest fee) for a few weeks? OBMWC - I won't be able to bring my E30 with me to California. It will be handed over to my 15yo brother as his first car. It's one month younger than he is! I will miss it. Thanks for your help! In my case, I replaced both the clutch master and slave (and brake MC while I was in there!). Upon disassembling the old MC and slave, it came to light that the rod which actuates the clutch had disassociated itself from the piston in the slave cylinder. This is an additional failure mode to the blown seal one... If you blow a seal on the slave, you'll get leaking brake fluid down in the bellhousing (should be visible from the outside). If you blow a seal in the MC, you won't necessarily see fluid (inside or out). E-mail if you want detailed R&R instructions. I was convinced of the superiority of the V1 a few years ago when I was in a convoy with two other guys with V1s. We all had radios. I was the first guy in line. The last guy who must have been 1/2 mile behind me picked up moving radar a full 20 seconds before I did. Luckily I had slowed down on his warning. Otherwise I'd have been busted. My parents had one and miss it (they replaced with a Civic), particularly my mother. Overall, it was a competent vehicle without any problems in the four years (50,000 miles) that they owned it. The motor has been improved since which was it's biggest drawback (had to be really revved to find any power...typical Honda) and the auto tranny was programmed with this in mind. Also, the plastic components were nice in that they avoided the typical paint damage that would occur but they scratched easily. I would think the latest model is a solid little vehicle (for you SUV lovers). The new Element....well, I haven't had a chance to inspect one closely and probably won't. One of the ugliest cars I have seen (not quite as ugly as an Aztek) but as ugly as I would have ever expected a Honda. I also not a fan of the door configuration or it's prodigious use of the black plastic. It also depends on your driving style a bit. I've had a cheap Whistler detector that I pull out for long trips for six years now (I do 15-20 kmiles/year, 1/2 city & 1/2 highway). Never got a ticket in that span. I don't want to start a road speed pissing match, but I will say it's not because I keep to the posted limits religiously. There have been plenty of occasions the Whistler bailed me out. I've been toying w/ picking up a V1, but I freely acknowledge it's because I do RF/uwave work and like its gizmo factor. This isn't like some other car mods where incremental performance gains can be realized. Given your driving style, a radar detector (and how well you keep your head up), you either get tickets or you don't. I have to conclude that for my purposes, the V1 offers vastly more performance than is useful. Some BMWs have a hose, and some have hard tubing from master to slave. I can't remember what kind of car this was, and I'm too lazy to search the archives for the original message. But if all else fails and there is a hose, check to see if it has gotten weak.
