It just depends on the list price. The Euro does not imply price
harmonisation across Europe, so your friend may eke out some savings by
shopping around although he should watch the VAT (goods and services tax)
which varies from country to country. Having said that, the bureaucracy
involved in registering a car for use in Spain when it was bought in e.g.
Belgium doesn't bear thinking about. An extra 12% is charged on top of the
usual 16% IVA (Spanish VAT) to register the car for use in Spain. Something
like this applies in every mainland European country, which many Pommies
don't realise, or don't want to realise, when they whinge about high car
purchase costs in the UK!

You may be interested in this

http://www.scottishsecretary.gov.uk/Publications/motor_xl.htm

which is useful for explaining the different registration costs in most EU
countries.

Your friend can enjoy low yearly road tax, but should be prepared for higher
petrol costs if he has formerly lived in e.g. the US, Canada or Oz. There
are few petrol E46s in Spain with an engine bigger than 2.0 litres, which
explains the popularity of the 318d, 320d and 330d.

AFAIK all BMW concessionaires have an approved used car scheme.

I've got a '93 325is. ETK shows both 88C and 92C
thermostats. Anyone know which on is "standard"?

In addition to Ed's comment, note that the seller will only accept cash
for the transaction. My experience on ebay is such that I will only pay
via credit card.

If anyone is looking for both a source for lighting and technically
sound advice, I have had several very satisfactory deals with Daniel
Stern. A search for "Daniel Stern Lighting" will find his site.

No association, just a contented customer.

Thanks to all who responded. In case anyone else is interested I got a lot
of recommendations for Apex Engineering in San Diego and a few for some
other miscellaneous shops. Thanks again.

>should translate into lower premiums which could translate into less revenue. Yes,
>I'm very sarcastic re: insurance companies.

Clarence, your sarcasm is affecting your logic...
Insurance companies lose money on claims, and gain it on premiums.. And
they gain only *slightly* more on surcharges to those premiums, but nowhere
near enough to offset the expense of paying for a claim. A good trend
for an insurance company is to continue to collect premiums, and have
reduced expenses on the claims side. But to make it a WIN -WIN situation,
the insurance company needs a good return on it's investments.. Like any
other entity with large sums of cash, the money from insurance premiums is
invested, and the money made from the investment income is what makes the
profit for the insurance company, as without that investment income,
most insurance companies actually run at a LOSS...

With regards to reducing the expense of claims, most insurance companies
offer their policyholders a discount on their premiums for taking an
accredited driver's education course (unfortunately not in the sense of
DE as a BMW CCA DE)... State Farm in particular offers car seat awareness
classes (how to properly install a car seat) and also bike rodeo classes
(where bicycle safety is taught to children) in an effore to reduce the
expense of claims, as well as save lives..

I agree, with the wording in the Mass policy, an adjuster *could*
interpret it narrowly and deny such a claim.
And as someone else mentioned, the expense of a legal challenge against
the insurer would be daunting :-(

The last couple years the U.S. Dealers have been selling a special edition
Disco II that looks a little like the old Disco I XD model (but all are not
yellow).

The models have all have a Land Rover Special Vehicles emblem (not a
sticker) on the rear doors.

I want to get one of these emblems for my new Yakima rack air deflector (my
old air deflector had a Special Vehicles sticker) but the dealer can't find
a part number.

Does anyone have a part number or know a mail order place that sells them?

Roland,

Not sure if you bought anything yet, but maybe 6 months ago I bought a
used set of E-code ellipsoids from munichparts.com for about $250
complete (buckets, etc). I also bought some other stuff so the shipping
was skewed, but I remember thinking it was reasonable.
In any event, I was very happy with their condition (slightly flecked,
but way better than the outgoing ellipsoids).
Of course a few months after installing them I was greeted with a stone
break (not chip) that basically took out the center section in one high
beam. New replacement (high beam) was about $50, and I think the
ellipsoid (with euros, you actually get just the glass, not the
projector) were close to that. Nice.
As Gary D pointed out, the connectors are different, so you'll need to
adapt them.

After checking the site, it appears that it is redirected to
bmwinfo.com, with no mention of parts. If you are interested, I have
the guy's email. I'm sure he'd be happy to set you up.

I've been pondering how best to repair/replace the pitted ellipsoids on
the
5er. This Ebay auction has a very attractive price for european
ellipsoids.
Price seems rather low compared to other replacement options. Can
anyone
comment on the product?

Also, has anyone bought the replacement lenses (also on Ebay)? This
might
be a cost effective interim solution until Gary D. comes up with that
Cibie
conversion :).

Having used both the E-code ellipsoids (original equipment on my
German-market E34) and the US ellipsoids back to back, I can
definitely say this is one case where the US lights are better. I
really can't figure out why, but the E-code lights has a narrower
beam and worse long-range focusing. The US ellipsoids looked like
what I _expected_ the E-code lights to look like, matching my good
experience with other chassis E-code lights.

Save the money, get the US lights, and put in HIDs.

Is anyone else but me watching the Louis Vuitton Cup race? I am really
enjoying this series. The Oracle/BMW boat lost last night by one
second, and that was because they had to execute a penalty 360 turn at
the finish line. It was some of the best racing I have seen in a long
time, and comparable to some of the saloon races last year. They were
penalized because they crashed into the rear end of the Alinghi boat on
an earlier leg. Tonight they won by 2 minutes and 13 seconds. Great
race also. The best of nine race series is now 3 to 1 favoring the
Alinghi boat.

Cheers
Steve Albrecht
