Group,
I'd like to rebuild my 1994 325is' brake calipers this spring before the track season,
but the Bentley manual doesn't contain any information on this procedure. Does anyone
know where I can find this information?
I'd like to tidy them up a bit too to remove some of the surface corrosion, perhaps
paint them flat black. What are the no-no's for sanding these things down? Anywhere
to be particularly careful?
Also, this will be my first time removing the caliper entirely, and the Bentley says
to just unscrew the caliper from the brake hose. Will that cause complete brake fluid
drainage out of the hose?
Is it advisable to completely bleed the system dry, and is that necessary to change
the master cylinder? How difficult a job is a master cylinder change?
Thanks in advance,
Neil

Anyone successfully repainted their gray (and probably fading) E36 rocker panels? My
car is black, so I'm not terribly concerned with color matching, but a lot of the jobs
I've seen are chipping and flaking away. What would the best type of paint be for
this - spray lacquer or enamel? Should I apply a clearcoat as well? I'm not looking
for a perfect result, but it should look passable at 5 feet.
Thanks for the help,
Neil, 1994 325is

Subject: [uuc] Rumbling under acceleration

Morning everyone (afternoon for those across the pond),

Car is an 88 M3. I have a problem with the car making a noise. There is a
rumbling that occurs between 4000-5000 rpms under acceleration. This only
occurs in 1st gear & only at full or near full throttle. Sounds like 3-5
quick, low pitched bangs that can be physically felt thought the car. I
can't get this to last for any period of time to figure it out because as
soon as I get off throttle or get over abour 5000 rpm, it goes away.

There is a breif history for this. Before I left for Thailand, there was a
much more violent rumble under acceleration in the lower gears. I left the
car with Tim Ng, & he helped facilitate the installation of a new
driveshaft. One of the ones from Portland (I think) with greasable
U-joints. There was no noise for a while. This was in October. In
December, the rumbling at 4-5k in 1st only started. We drove the car around
& came to the conclusion that the center support bearing had failed. I took
the car to the shop that did the work, & they concluded the same thing.
Since the DS went in less than 1100 miles ago, the center support was
replaced free. I picked the car up last night. I didn't run the car hard
because it was sooooo cold, so I didn't notice until I got home that the
problem wasn't corrected.

Where should I look now? Like I said, this only occurs very breifly between
4000-5000 rpms (around the torque peak, I guess)under heavy throttle. I'm
assuming that I probably shouldn't drive the car too much either....

Any help would, as always, be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lee

I've been watching when I can. The first two races made it look like a
cakewalk for Alinghi, but the last two suggest Oracle/BMW might have a
chance. The popular opinion seems to be, though, that no matter who wins
the LV Cup, they won't have a chance against the Kiwis and their
double-hulled boat.

It has also been funny reading the ridiculously premature speculation as
to, if Alinghi actually wins the America's Cup, where the next Cup races
will be held. It couldn't be held in Alinghi's home country since
Switzerland is landlocked. Of course, most of the Alinghi's crew are
Kiwis, so you could almost consider New Zealand to be their "second home
country."

Is anyone else but me watching the Louis Vuitton Cup race? I am really
enjoying this series. The Oracle/BMW boat lost last night by one
second, and that was because they had to execute a penalty 360 turn at
the finish line. It was some of the best racing I have seen in a long
time, and comparable to some of the saloon races last year. They were
penalized because they crashed into the rear end of the Alinghi boat on
an earlier leg. Tonight they won by 2 minutes and 13 seconds. Great
race also. The best of nine race series is now 3 to 1 favoring the
Alinghi boat.

Cheers

Is the flex disc new? Can you tell where these bangs are coming from?
(front, rear, etc.)

Is there any accel. loss when these bangs occur? Could it be a
combustion problem?

Could it be the torsion of the engine is clacking broken motor mounts
?

These are just shots in the dark, obviously. There is so little to go
on...

Subject: [uuc] <E34> engine question

Just acquired a high mileage '93 w/the M50 engine. Very smooth and quiet except
on a cold start after sitting overnight. Engine clatters like all the lifters are w/o
oil in
them. Which brings me to my first question (haven't had the chance to pick up
Bentley yet). Do these engines have hydraulic lifters? Is this common or sign of a
needed repair?

TIA

Griot's Garage sells a kit that is better than the factory and is incredibly
easy to apply.
Personally, I would have the rockers painted to match the car, to update the
look of the car a few years...

This engine does have hydraulic lifters, and those lifters have been updated 4
times since this car was produced.

Lifter bleed down is common on the older cars, you can try using thinner, or
thicker, oil to see if the problem goes away, or you might want to think about
rebuilding the cylinder head at your "high mileage" and replacing the lifters.

Earlier this week I described a lazy clutch pedal (needing help getting off the
floor).
Thanks to all who responded.

As much as I wanted to do it myself, reality (hi temps in the low 20's, no space in
the
garage, work schedule) forced me to take it to the shop. They found a wet master
and seepage on the slave. Both units will be replaced.
