Grouppe,

A few more things need attention on the 5er. So, off to the UUC with an
email :)

auto tranny- never got a response about whether anyone has installed a Dinan
tranny chip, thought I would try again. And since the internet is a
wonderful source of dubious knowledge, is it worthwhile to place the
transmission in -N- during long stops (yeah I already hear you, "define
long....)? I've long removed my foot from the clutch on manuals at stop
lights, does doing the equivalent to an automatic improve the life in any
way?

side view mirror motors- I perused Bentley for some info but beyond simple
glass replacement, there does not appear to be much. My motors seem to work
in only one direction and poorly at that (jerky motion, very little actual
movement). Anyone have more info about the mechanical function of power
mirrors? I'm going to try the "clean all electrical components" thing
first.

rear passenger window switch (door mount)- are these supposed to be lit,
like the controls up front?

Thanks again. All the information over the last month and a half has been
very helpful. It's nice to not be working in the dark.

Regards,

Roland

Has anyone seen/used the new $29.95 Pelican Parts E36 jack pad advertised in
the January Roundel? Does it work as well as one would expect? I've had
their $14 jack pad for my 911 for years and never had a hint of a problem
with it. Unfortunately, I finally buckled and bought the $100 uber-pad from
Ultimate Garage a while back after looking for an alternative forever.
Looks like I should have held out a while longer. No doubt the UG pad is
fancier, but is it more functional? For a $70 premium it ought to be.
Jeez.

For the mirrors, check the switches. Dunno about Dinan tranny chips.

Yeah, just blow on the suction cups a little to get some condensation on them (i.e.,
the method people use to clean eye glasses). This works really well and I have been
using the provided suction cups in two different vehicles for most of ~8 years now
without an issue. One set of suction cups eventually gave up the ghost and didn't
stick well anymore but I replaced them with the provided spare set.

Later,

Rich - V1 believer and I don't lick the suction cups...

That's one thing I love about Pennsylvania, only the
State Police can use RADAR. So the locals who use
those cute signs are just blowing smoke, but it does
give a good indication of where they will use VASCAR
in the future.

On a side note, I picked up a Trooper on an overpass
that I have not seen used in quite a while, Thank you
V1.

Where the Arrows really come in handy is now all of
the constructions signs have RADAR and just shoot
signals out to make detector owners hit the brakes
(that's a real safe idea), I can easily use the arrows
and bogey counter to know when there is an extra
"surprise " in the same area.

to use a dinan tranny chip, your car would have to have a transmission control
unit... which it does not ;)

I like using them to see how accurate the speedo is, unfortunately, they
only display the last 2 significant digits!!!!!!

A friend of mine who lives in the Chicago area just called me. He is
looking for a M6 or an E28 M5.

He is looking for relatively low mileage cars (under 80,000 miles).

I recall a couple of bimwads running posts for cars that may fit his
criteria.

If you have one for sale (or know of one that is for sale), drop me an
email.

Thanks,

Dean

Until now, I've always just traded in my old cars at the dealership.
Now, I'm trying to sell my M5 myself, and I have a concern about potential
buyers test-driving the car.

What do you guys normally do? Let them take it out alone, or stay in the
car with them? I cringe at both options. What if they start driving like an
idiot while I'm in it? BTW, what's the expected half-life of an idiot in an
M5 for the first time?!

This reminds me of a Brett Anderson story (hi Brett, hi Kathy!) - I flew to
Cleveland one December evening to checkout the E34 M5 he was selling. He
picked me up at the airport, and we proceeded to zoom down the interstate
for a few miles, while he went zipped on/off a few exit/entrance ramps. We
stopped for something to eat, then he let me drive back to the airport.

It was evening, it had been snowing (December), and I believe some freezing
rain was falling (at least that's how I remember ;-). Anyway, I'd driven an
E28 535is - but never an ///M car. So, as I'm accelerating down the
entrance ramp to merge onto the interstate, doing around 70-80mph, Brett's
in the passengers seat saying "Comon' ya WUSS, put cha FOOT inta it!" -
LOL. He had no idea what an amauter racecar driver I was/am.

I kept it pretty slow that evening, (and Kathy should thank me for it ;^).
In fact, I remained a "WUSS" for several months! before I felt comfortable
enough to push it wide open. That evening I could have easily launched
Brett, me, and the car across the meridian or over the railing at 100+mph -
half-life = 5 minutes.

I would absolutely go with them, but ultimately, I think it's a situation you need to
evaluate with each prospective buyer. If a 55 year old gentleman and his wife arrive
in their E34 540, you're probably ok to let them go. If two 19-year old guys show up
driving anything this side of a new Range Rover, I would say you should drive them
around in it.
Alternatively, go to your state's DMV and get the name of the shop that installs their
passenger side brake pedals for driver's ed cars.
