I must appologize for any confusion I may have caused. I was not previously
aware that there was a DoT5.1 fluid and assumed that we were still talking
about DoT5. The site Vic mentioned explains the differences very well.

True, however, there is a multitude of web sites that refer to them as zeus fasteners.
Perhaps this is a generic equivalent of a name-brand product?

I got the same error code on my brand new Club Sport back in November
1995-three days after taking delivery. The dealer reset the SRS light
and the problem has nor recurred in over seven years and 78000 miles of

the E46 M3 runs 0-60 in 4.8ish. the best I recall the US car magazines ever
getting out of the E36 M3 was 5.5ish, but I may be wrong.

the E36 had 3.23 (3.0l) or 3.15 (most 3.2l but I'm not an E36 expert) rear ends.

the E46 has a 3.64 diff, plus it is a very specialized sort of diff with features
which I believe specifically improve acceleration & overall traction.

that's not the real topic of discussion here (I don't think) as the original
question was about M roadsters wasn't it ?

the 240hp roadsters & coupes (as noted, no significant differences between them
over their life other than the addition of ASC for the '99 & '00 cars) had a 3.23
diff. these cars ran 0-60 in 5.0 flat in several tests & were for a while (until
the E39 M5 came out I believe) the "fastest BMW ever".

the very limited number of '01 & '02 roadsters & coupes (the coupes are likely
among the rarest of all BMW's ever produced) w/ the 315hp S54 motor are rated at
less power due to "restrictions in the exhaust system due to the different
packaging of the Z3 platform" officially, but likely due to the lower rev limit vs
the M3 application. they were given a 3.15 diff (same as the euro S50B32 315hp
motors from '98-'00 in Europe & the rest of the world) which reduces their
potential for M3-beating acceleration with ~300 lbs less weight & the same power.
several people on the M coupe message board put in 3.46 diffs and reported
massively improved acceleration (duh). the S54 coupes did not get the trick diff
from the M3 either.

there are tons of mods for the S52 car & I suspect that with cams, intake & JimC
programming you can get the motor to ~290hp & with a shorter diff & bigger rear
tires you might end up with E46 M3-baiting acceleration, but it's an incredibly
fun car stock. if you go crazy for power, the Dinan or other forced induction
options would likely work fine. but unless you're tracking the car heavily, all
the power is wasted on the street anyway.

if you want a unique, rare car with a very cool motor, get the S54. if you want
to save a huge pile of money (I bet it's still $10k if not more) & get a car which
will have lower running costs (simpler engine, esp the valvetrain) & suffer
massively less depreciation, get an S52 car.

I loved my M coupe for the 39 months the lease lasted, but it was too expensive
(even at the reduced residual I ended up with - around $25k) to make into a track
car & not quite practical either. given that you should be able to get a '99 or
'00 for right at $20k, they're a whole lot of car for that kind of money. I
figure I'll end up getting one again someday, perhaps when they've become a $15k
proposistion.

Tammer -

Check your brake fluid level. Many systems will cause the brake lining
warning light to come on dim when the brake fluid is low.

. . . .
Brake lining warning light started flickering during a
250-mile trip this weekend. Should it flicker or just
"come on" and stay on? I thought that once the wire was
tripped, that's that and the dummy light stays on.

Subject: [uuc] re: M roadster questions

Jay,

Let me first preface this by saying that I owned a '98 M
Roadster, 2 E36 M3's and several other BMWs prior to those.
I dumped my M roadster in favor of a new '01 Boxster S 2
years ago for several reasons. I am not here to bash BMW, in
fact a recent family addition will soon bring me back to
BMW. However, with the exception of straight line
acceleration, the Boxster S is greatly superior to the M.
Used '00 Boxster S's can now be had for as little as the mid
to upper 30's, it is something you should consider. Drive
one if that is within your price range and decide for
yourself. That being said....Short of forced induction you
will not get 'significant' HP/Torque boosts on the pre-'01 M
engines in the aftermarket. Feel free to e-mail me privately
if you would like me to elaborate on my opinion and the
reasons I switched from an MZ3 to a P-car.

Of course, I may just be a raging baboon....

The E46 M3 really does accelerate impressively fast above 60 mph. (For 0-60
times, launch technique and traction count for a lot.) My student's E46 was
absolutely leaving E36 M3s for dead on the back straight at Mid Ohio last
fall.

On the other hand for a real acceleration rush, nothing beat the
track-prepped Viper of my A group "student" - there wasn't much I could
teach him.
