I put PIAA Platinum Super White bulbs in the race car, and I'm happy with
them. Brighter and more white than the stock bulbs (I drive the car to/from
the track).

Bob,
I'm not sure about your radiator nipples, but the plastic radiator's upper
neck will crack and fall off over time. It's only a question of time. I'm
in hot Dallas TX and my radiator went south at around 55K miles on track.
My wife's commuter E36 lost hers at 45K on an autoX course. YMMV.
I'm continuously amazed at some dealers managing to get away with $700+
radiator replacement bills. OEM Behr or LR (I have both and they are
indistinguishable) can be had for $135-150 (www.bimmerparts.com) but will
probably crack as well. There are all aluminum alternatives out there for
$350+.
I've heard of people cracking the plastic thermostat housing as well. So
consider replacing yours with a $20 aluminum one. I did, even though both
mine and my wife's were fine. Than again my 50K mile plastic water pump
also looked as good as new when I took it out.

> I suspect Alex will say shocks/struts, but they actually feel quite
> tight.

So did mine. Upon until the moment I took them out, pressed them in with
the pinky finger and observed that one of the two shock pistons never
rebounded. The other took 30 seconds to extend.
I can not explain why the car continued to ride well with dead shocks,
even though it had gotten floaty in slalom transitions. I remember my old
ex-E30s getting soft and bouncy on dead shocks, but not the E36 M3.
When the time comes, the simplest replacement are Koni SAs (DAs if money
is no object) that mate wonderfully with stock springs 1/4-3/4 turn
stiffer from full soft. Or one of the multitude of coil over kits.

Have fun,

What is the offset on the Kosei wheels? Also, do you expect that they would hold up
to the rigors of the One Lap of America? TIA.

Brett says:

That would be toe, and it sounds like she bent a tie rod. Must've been one
hell of an impact 'cause as small as they are, they're strong.
- ------------------------------

If it is indeed the tie rods, that would be great. Well maybe not great,
but based on the age of the car and shimmy issues, the idler arms, center
rod and outer tie rods were on the hot list for replacement. My wife just
yesterday mentioned that the steering has been hunting since my thrust arm
replacement. The recent hit has made it "really bad". More proof of tire
rods?

Since I'm describing this in words, my remaining concern is that I missed
something. Is there any way to check/inspect the steering rack? Someone
suggested that the adjustment mechanism on the rack could be broken.
Anything like this on BMWs?

And since you and Geeze are curious, she managed to contact the inside edge
of the left wheel against the rear passenger bumper of the other car. The
impact force was directed against the inside of the wheel. How? Well, it
was one of those "there's a better spot there" things. She was trying to
avoid a loop around the lot (angled parking) and attempted to execute a full
180 turn.

Thanks for the analysis.

Cheers,

Roland

I'd also suggest looking at Philips Vision Plus bulbs..
available from:

http://www.powerbulbs.com (they're in the UK - but shipping
is free - I haven't been able to find a US distributor.. mine
are on order as of today.)

In a good test I saw - these were superior to all the other
"50% more light" bulbs, and have the advantage of drawing
no more current than the stock bulb - something to consider
if you look at the size of the wiring going to the bulb sockets.

Hella's came out very poorly in the tests, as did Bosch (go
figure!).. The Sylvania Silver Star is undoubtedly the same
bulb Powerbulbs has listed as the Osram Silver Star - it also
got a good rating, but not as good as the Philips.

Eric do you have spacers up front or did you roll the fenders?
What size tire do you use at the track?

If she did that, the steering arm could be bent, not to mention the wheel.
The arm is the part bolted to the bottom of the strut. She is still driving
it with the steering wheel 90 deg off? You may want to add 2 front tires to
your list.

Ed,

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I don't have a good one and I'm about
800 miles from Baltimore (St. Louis). Running the rear defroster has no
effect.

I'll check connections in the rear tonight.

Cheers,

Geoff

The antenna booster is in the rear sail panel near the rear window. A
thump to the dash should have little affect on it.

I'd check my antenna connections at the rear of the radio, and swap the
radio with a known good unit. I have one, if you are near Baltimore.

Does using the rear window defrost have any effect?

Geoff,

The cold failure strongly suggests a solder joint crack. Diging into the radio
would probably show it (concentrate on the output xsistars). Taking these things
apart (at least on older units) is not simple (like a rubics).

Two answers, one email:

I run the Kosei K1 Racing 17x8.5 wheels with 235/40/17 Kumho Ecsta V700
tires
Did not have to use spacers or roll the fenders.

I believe they are a perfect e40. I'd have to double check to make sure.
They are very strong. I don't think you'd have a problem.

Geoff, humor me here - when the car is cold, as you say, are you running
the rear window defroster? Isn't the E36's antenna in the rear window?
Correlation?

It appears to be a cup holder/armrest/junk bin. Perhaps not so much an
armrest.

BMW calls it a Stowage tray, it's for all E36 except convertible, WITHOUT
factory arm rest.

I own a 95 540i and find the steering wheel rather large. I am trying

the airbag from my 4 spoke sport (non M wheel) fit in the 3 spoke M3
wheel? Any one know the price of a new airbag fro the 3 spoke?
