You know, after looking back over your post, I noticed the tranny crooked
statement. I have a client with an 88' M3 that has the same crooked tranny.
It does not cause any problems with his car though. I wonder if the center
support bearing has had it's 6mm of pre-load. I have found that this is
critical. What you need to do is loosen the nuts on the center-support
bearing just a little, allow the bearing to find it's rest position, then
preload it forward 6mm on both sides. This may help a little.
As for the subframe mount check procedure, jack up the car using the rear
diff. as a lift point and put a set of jackstands under the drip rails
(factory lift points) on both sides so as to not interfere with the rear
subframe, then lower the car down onto the stands and remove the jack. Take
a look at the subframe where it connects right in front of the rear wheels
and see if one side is not hanging a little lower or higher than the other
side. Then you can do your wiggling and prying and you should be able to
see any problems. If the engine mounts are too tall or basically if the
engine and tranny are not riding at the same height, this will cause a bind
under a load also. You need to make sure that the engine and tranny mounts
make the engine and tranny ride at the same height. This may take some
measuring, but you will get it.
I wasn't insinuating that you have a bad car, just that in my experience it
is very hard to keep up with what works on what and what years all of that
stuff came from.
If I started to tell you all of the oddball parts that were on my 69' 1602,
it would take hours to figure it all out. Sometimes when things fail, I
really have to think about where all of the components originally came
from...but, 250HP in a 2500lb car, with massive brakes and a euro 5 speed
and a close ratio steering gear, and a fully adjustable coil over suspension
make it alot of fun. 0-60 times are a shade over 4.5 seconds but with the
gear ratio I am at 7600 RPM's at 125mph! Not the best club racer, but
untouchable at the autocrosses. Never had my time beaten by ANYONE!
Good luck with the car, and keep me posted, as I would be happy to help if I
can...

Group,

Tonight at 10pm Eastern, there is a program on about
the Autobahn. The one commercial I saw last night had
several shots of (what I believe to be) a Ruf at
speed, which in and of itself is reason enough to
plunk down for an hour.

Here's the only problem - I don't recall exactly which
channel it was on. I'm pretty sure it's just a
standard Discovery/TLC type thing, but I can't be
certain. Sorry for the vagueness, but it seems like
it'll be worth looking for.

I saw that program last time I was at home for the
weekend. I got to TiVo it and watch it once or twice
again. I can't remember which channel it was on
either, but I wanna say it was the History channel.

It was very good, included history of the Autobahn, as
well as a few shots of a Ruf Turbo flying down the
Autobahn at night.

Thanks for the heads-up, I just looked it up on
TVGUIDE.com. The Show is Modern Marvels on The
History Channel.

Check your local listings for details :)

As I have never seen an X5 with so much as a dirty alloy wheel, I never
expect to see one with a tow hitch attached to it.

Someone (Dennis?) asked about the towing capacity of the 540i. The braked
towing capacity of the 540i, quoted by BMW, is 2,075 kg, 2,000 kg for the
Touring. (Figs for the standard gearbox, which is auto, though a 6-speed is
still available as an option.) Multiply by 2.24 for lb. Sorry, BMW UK
forces metric measurements upon us. Anyway it's 4648 lb and 4480 lb,
respectively.

I asked Mr. Conforti to comment on this, kind of sort of knowing what the
answer would be. His reply is, basically, this is a resistor that connects
to the coolant temp sensor. The ECU thinks the car is colder and runs a
slightly richer mixture. Anyway, before falling for the marketing claims,
it might be beneficial to determine if there are times when a richer
mixture might be bad. Let's just say that I'm not ordering one.

I'll look mine over carefully, since unlike his, mine are painted ones

If you are going to tow get an appropriate tow vehicle. I highly recommend
the 2500HD duramax diesel. By the way, my 22ft enclosed trailer weighed
around 7K - 8K when fully loaded with race car, tools etc. There is no way
an enclosed trailer even fully Al. is going to way 1800 lbs. My featherlite
trailer weighs 1350 lbs and it is an open trailer.

X5 and 540i will not be able to tow an enclosed trailer and if you try to
please stay off the highways as you would be endangering other drivers on
the road as well.

"Under 2,000 total pounds" is the Trailex claim.

Bora, on a separate note - I'm guessing you have the
Featherlite 3110? Can you reply to me off-list and
let me know what you think of it? I'm considering
buying one in a couple months.

I am sure it is until you put in cabinets, tire rack, lining, insulation,
and a winch.

Even at 1999 lbs plus race car, plus spares, plus tires ( I carry three
sets), plus tools, you are looking at a good 6000 lbs. The trailer length vs
X5/540i's wheelbase is also an issue. Even with my 2500HD in heavy winds,
you can feel the trailer shake the truck, with an X5 it will flip it
sideways.

YMMV.
