Last year I got five different estimates to do the "same" paint work (no body work required) on my 1990 325i w/ Delphin gray metallic (2 stage) paint. The estimates included: Repaint the trunk lid (paint peeling) Repaint the front bumper cover (paint coming off) Repaint the front lower valence (paint sand blasted off) The estimates ran from a low of about $1,300 to a high of about $2,500, and there was absolutely no agreement among the shops on how these various jobs should be done. Options for the trunk lid included: Paint the trunk lid only, no blending. Blend the paint onto the quarter panels Blend the paint onto the quarter panels and up the C pillars into the roof Blend the paint onto the quarter panels and up the C pillars into the roof and down the A pillars On the bumper, some would take it off the car, some would leave it on. On the valence, some would re-apply the chip coat to the existing panel, others would replace the panel. Ultimately, I bought a used trunk lid for $125 (with an "is" spoiler already attached) and have done nothing at the front, since nothing is about to rust. But my point is, ask 5 different professionals and you'll get 5 different opinions. Good luck with your decisions, Scott Miller GGC BMW CCA >Date: Fri, 21 Feb 2003 15:56:16 -0500 >From: "Beaudette, Roland" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: [uuc] accident repair question > >Grouppe, > >You may recall that my wife dinged up our E34 and damaged the front >suspension. SHEEEEEZ, is this a *stupid* design. WTF. I mean, this is dumb. I cleaned it all out... but now that I've seen this, I'm going to freak every time I drive through a heavy rain. I have one question for the list... has anybody ever put a fine screen beneath the plenum grill (to keep foreign material out)? I'm thinking that keeping the dirt out would help keep the drain from plugging? I can see drilling more drain holes too, but I can't imagine how to get in there (maybe a dremel with a gooseneck?). - - Kevin Jay '96 328is, red/tan, 72K ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Feb 2003 18:03:26 -0800 (PST) From: david kroth <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] 850 CSI You 8 series fans will prolly appreciate this car: <http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2404631533&category=6130> ===== David Kroth [EMAIL PROTECTED] __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Therefore the former is for sale in Toronto. It can be seen at www.trader.ca at the online dealer Prestige Toys who is consigning it for me. I'm looking for about 20K Canadian. It has a Jim Conforti Chip, uuc short shifter and two sets of wheels. Recent major inspection (the big one), rebuilt front suspension but stock springs and shocks. It's much better than average shape. All service records from myself and the first owner are with the car. With your box of stuff, were the containers ever opened? I would think that dessication would be a problem. This car is a 325iX, which does add one wrinkle, but is essentially the same. The ABS light comes on at start up and never goes out. The ABS system is not working (this is not a faulty warning light). Here is what I know: Wheel sensors: Normally, when a wheel sensor fails, the ABS light does not come on until the car has been driven 20-200 feet. Based on my situation, I have assumed a wheel sensor is not the problem. Hub sensor: I would guess that a hub sensor failure would not show up until the car started moving, just as a wheel sensor failure. I have tentatively assumed this is not the problem. Relay(s) under the black plastic cover over the ABS pump: I don't recall whether there is one relay or two here, but I have swapped in working relay(s), so this is not the problem. ABS pump: Know idea how to diagnose, hope it isn't this. iX extra sensor located near the fusebox: My recollection is that this sensor is needed so the ABS system can detect when the car is moving. I believe the ABS system on a 2WD 325 utilizes the front wheel sensors to determine whether the car is moving. Since the front wheels are driven on a 325iX, the front wheel sensors cannot be used for this purpose. Hence the additional sensor. I would assume that like the wheel and hub sensors this module would not cause a fault until the car is moving. ABS control box/brain located under the driver's side kick panel: Swapping this is my next planned step. Thanks in advance for any advice, Stan ------------------------------ End of [uucdigest] V3 #6136 *************************** | | In memory of Michel Potheau - friend, enthusiast, founder of the BMW CCA. |________________________________________ | Please visit these UUC-approved BMW parts vendors/service providers: | (listed alphabetically) | | Autoscope-Motorsports - http://www.autoscope-motorsports.com | |==================================================== | | Koala MotorSport .
