I have not been following the thread closely enough to know which BMW you
are speaking of.

On E38s and E39s, they sometimes have false alarms due to the motion
detector. An easy way to avoid this is to activate the alarm but not the
motion detector.

On an E38, one would hit the lock button twice on the remote. The first one
will lock the doors, and turn on the alarm and motion detector. The second
click will turn off the motion detector (the red light on the dash will stay
on for about 10 seconds).

I had asked him if the rear bump stops were the same as the E36 M3 and he hadn't even
looked
that them yet. So, yeah, I was talking about the E36 M3 rears as you suggested. I did
not know
that the M Coupe rears were different. That's good to know.

Subject: [uuc] V1 laser experience

Kevin Kelly asked:

>>Does anyone know if California cops are using Laser?

I haven't detected any laser guns with my V1 in the SF bay region.

>>I've heard that even if they are all the laser detector feature does is tell you
>>that you
>>are about to get a ticket.

On my summer trip to the midwest last year, the Wisconsin State Patrol was using
laser. I think
the laser beams divergence combined with scatter off a target car ahead of you give
the V1 enough
signal to work with. I only had about 1/8 mile(650 feet!) warning to crank the Z06
down from
- -ahem- somewhat illegal speed. If the state patrol officier had directly target me
instead of the
guy ahead of me I would have been nailed.

I really like how they do it in Nevada and Wyoming. In those states they blast
on-comming traffic
with Ka band while they are driving. You get plenty of warning.

Now a question for Kevin:
How do you like your V1 windshield mount?
I have been working on a windshield mount that I think is better. No suction cups,
excellent
adjustability, rock solid stability, easy to remove and install the V1, can also
optionally mount
and power a hand-held GPS. It does require the attachment of a mounting shoe to the
windshield
usually out of sight behind the rear view mirror.

Cheers,
John Pease

Folks:
This guy is working from a work address at AT&T within the

somebody found out that he is using company network to scam people.

Are we supposed to feel sorry if he/she gets fired for using the company
network to scam people?

Christian,

you should forward the email to ebay so they can apply some pressure from
their end.

Alpine alarms of that vintage had the glass breakage microphone
installed inside the control unit. The case clicked and popped due to
heat expansion/contraction and that would set off the false alarm. The
fix is a new control unit with a green dot(indicating the new improved
part). There is a TSB on the problem.

Subject: [uuc] E34 steering

Gary and Brett,
Thanks for the input on e34 535i-M5 steering box swap. Before I pursue
this further let me ask if the e34 is generally more sloppy feeling than
the e28 in the steering or is it just this one. I have replaced the
front upper and lower arms and tie rods and shocks. I have had several
alignments done. On the last two I asked the technician to increase the
toe-out which he reluctantly did and the feel improved. He said if we
went further tire wear would increase drastically. The steering response
feels delayed and causes one to over-correct resulting in the car
tending to "dive" in the direction one is turning. At rest or in moving
the steering wheel back and forth in small increments there does not
seem to be a lot of slack. I tightened the adjustment nut on top of the
box which increased the drag on the wheel but did not remedy the
problem. Is the box worn out? Would replacement with stock box make a
significant improvement. Any other e34 owners with steering gripes? Mine
almost doesn't feel like a BMW, does yours? This one is waay different
than my previous and current other Bimmers.

Subject: [uuc] e34 Window Switch Cluster

My window switch cluster doesn't seem to be illuminating properly. When
I'm driving with the lights on, the switches are very dim. I thought
this was normal, but I've noticed lately that when I unlock the doors at
night, the cluster lights up bright and when I release the key it goes
back to dimly lit. Another concern is that it seems to stay lit too
long after I lock the doors. I haven't timed it out exactly, but my
good battery went dead for no apparent reason and I'm afraid it's the
switch cluster lights staying on. It's definitely longer than a few
minutes. The cluster itself is fairly new, so I've ruled that out. Any
ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
