I've got a 95 540iA with an open differential and no traction control. I live in Michigan. I'd like to get LSD to at least make winter and wet driving a little more predictable. What's involved in swapping out the differential with one from a 750 3.15 to add a little more low-end oomph? I've read you have to replace the output flange with the one from your differential (and have a shop do it so it's loaded/torqued properly. If that's done, can I do the rest of the swap myself (with at least one assistant and a couple good floor jacks)? Thanks. Chris, Depending on which Hella horns you are interested in, AutoZone or Advanced Auto might be able to save you some $. I bought Hella air horns from A-Z for less than Griot's price. Easy to check as its the only small white plug attached to the outside of the differential. All the rest of the cluster works. Under load the gauge is at zero and occaisionally when lifting off the gas the gauge will swing to infinity but back to zero instantly with the application of the gas pedal. Any ideas? The cruise is non-functional also. This is the worst aspect of the E34. I think the E28 can be as bad, or at least the E28 M5 I drove was. If you have adjusted the box and replaced the linkages, you are left only with the column itself. Apparently there is some slop in the lower section of the column. Gary Derian, from whom I learnt of this problem, replaced his and reported an improvement. I found his car quite good in the steering department. If your box is worn, I think ZF in CA sells replacements for around $650. Neil Deshpande - steering box adjustment soon *** "TOM DOTZLER" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> "Before I pursue this further let me ask if the e34 is generally more sloppy feeling than the e28 in the steering or is it just this one. I have replaced the front upper and lower arms and tie rods and shocks. I have had several alignments done. I tightened the adjustment nut on top of the box which increased the drag on the wheel but did not remedy the problem. Is the box worn out? Would replacement with stock box make a significant improvement. Any other e34 owners with steering gripes? Mine almost doesn't feel like a BMW, does yours? This one is waay different than my previous and current other Bimmers. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2003 05:44:51 -0800 From: "Kevin Kelly" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Valentine One Windshield Mount John Pease wrote: >How do you like your V1 windshield mount? The V1 windshield mount works great, but if possible I like to mount the detector higher to get it off the windshield. It is actually on my new Range Rover that I'm using the V1 windshield mount. On my old Range Rover and most BMWs I am able to clip the V1 to the leading edge of the headliner or mount it up high back from the window. I removed the V1 but left the remote display (in the ashtray). During the work on the car they fried the remote display. I called and got an RMA and shipped it back with a check for the repairs (I was way out of warranty). I got the display back - or a new one - right away and my check was in the return box. A class act for sure. I recently upgraded my V1s from the larger ones to the new smaller ones. I noticed the new detectors came with 2 sizes of cups. I assume that the smaller ones will work in most cases with the lighter detector and be less noticeable from outside the car. I have been hit several times with LIDAR and the V1 went off each time. Lucky for me I saw the cop ahead of time or was not speeding because I had about 0 warning each time. To be fair, the cops around here are USUALLY standing right on the side of the road in plain view. If you are paying attention and scanning you will see them before they hit you. I think everyone with a detector is hating those new GM SUV brake lights. I also get falses at the new sign at Arbys near the house and occasionally those generator driven roadside info-signs (i.e. "right lane closed 1/2 mile").
