Kevin, a friend found out the hard way that the Orange County police use laser. Friend was using a Passport 8500, and when it went off, the officer had already recorded his speed. He actually had a pretty friendly chat with the cop because the cop was curious to see if his Passport detected laser, and said friend got to try out the laser system. It apparently requires some amount of skill to use because you have to hold it steady enough, and have good aim to get a good reading off a shiny part of the car.. The cop was apparently quite good with it, and could tag cars very quickly. - --Andre ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2003 19:44:42 -0500 From: "Christian Bernhardt" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Driver Humor or Car Owner Stereotype -- You Decide Thought I pass this on to the group. Hi Steve, The switch for the lights as well as the door window glass seal is integrated into the door strike - hence your problem with the lights staying on. I suspect that the catch on the door itself froze and wouldn't latch onto the strike to close the switch, thereby causing the lights to stay on. If you look carefully you can see the switch on the center pin of the strike. Very common in cold climates - the grease on the door catch freezes solid and prevents the catch from latching completely or not at all. Warm weather or a hairdryer on the catch solves the problem Hope this helps. Ike You wrote: >We had heavy rain here yesterday, followed by a large temperature >drop. When this happens, the a/c button in the cabin lights up and I'm unable to turn it off. The sound from the compressor is also abnormal - more of a whirring sound that changes pitch with the engine rpms - very distinct from what I am used to hearing. I've gotten around it by pulling the #9 fuse (disabling the horn as well). Bentley mentions an a/c control module and an evaporator temperature sensor...would a malfunction in one of these cause these symptoms? Thanks! James is not being malicious in any way, what he's laying out are the facts cold and hard though they be. To even begin the journey there are a lot of things you'll have to catch up on, such as knowing the CPU instruction codes cold , the cpu's register architecture, memory functions and microcode... that's even before you can begin to disassemble the high level code which implies you've gotten throught the eprom hard and soft locks. Can it be done, tup with time and determination but I got news for you even Jim had help when he first started on the Siemen's processor and that's with his innate intellegence and experience already in the mix. In the "old days" you could get a hobby kit and learn about the inner workings of a Z8 or 8051 and be on a par with most engineers using these devices. I would suggest two things for you since you clearly have the desire. 1) Take a few courses in a JC or college. 2) after that team up with a couple or more engineer's who've done it before but not necessarily the application you're thinking of. They'll put you way ahead of the game while they enjoy a new challenge. - -Kevin P.s. I've been out of the country so I apologize for coming into the discussion so late. It'll be interesting to see the upcoming stream. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2003 21:22:01 -0800 (PST) From: igor koruga <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Weird (?) Idle Problem Prior to yesterday my 86 325 was idling fairly ok, around 800 rpm. Sometimes it would go up or down by ~75 RPM or so while at the stop light. So I figured I would clean ICV. So I did. Yesterday I took it off, sprayed some carb cleaner, shook it for a while, now balck-ish carb cleaner came out. I thought I cleaned it and put it back. Now it idles at ~1400 RPM !!! When I started the car at work I noticed that it started to idle at ~ 1200 rpm and within few minutes slowly got up to ~ 1400. So, when I came home today I checked resistance across Coolant Temp. Sensor: 320 Ohm. So far so good ( I think) since I just parked the car and resistance corresponds to about 176F (per Bentley). So I check resistance at Coolant Temp Switch terminals (on the radiator inlet, second sensor from the top?) and it shows NO CONTINUITY. (Bentley says that at this temp there should be continuity - switch closed). Thinking that it is the problem I put a jumper on the wire leads for CT switch (to fool it into loop closed i.e. switch closed). I start the car and idle is still high. So one of the two, sensor or switch, is perhaps laying to me. I am not sure how to diagnose witch. Afterwards I also disconnected the ICV and with jumpers applied voltage to its terminals it closes. Then I put it back on, withy valve still exposed, and turned ignition on it hums and vibrates, but it closed ( I guess because car is still worm?). I think that Bentley says that it should be half open. I am not sure what to do next. Since I have a ICV with adjustable screw I was thinking to try playing with that, even though I am not sure if that would lower the idle ( I think it would lower the baseline)(P.S. I just tried screwing it all the way in and idle dropped 200 RPM but thats about it). Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks, Igor __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
