You pays yer money and you takes yer choice. Limited slip: you've got to
pay attention to where the rear of the car is going, but at least it goes.
Open diff: you don't have to worry about where it's going because it won't
go.

And if you think the current buggy-spring Lightning is trouble, the next
one reputedly gets four-valve heads, Ford's patented refrigerated
intercooler, and a tweaked version of the IRS out of the Expedition...

Now if Ford would only bother to build *cars* with bits of similar
capability. Oh wait, they do. They get real close in Australia
(http://www.fordperformancevehicles.com.au) but they won't send them to the
US.

Don't get me started...

According to the ETK, the "Short Engine" (block, head, oil canister) weighs
153kg or 337lbs.

Pardon the OT, I am assuming that someone here will be interested in
this stuff.

I was at the Hot Rod & Restoration show in Indy last week and took some
pictures: 66 Chevelle, Plymouth Roadrunner, original Shelby GT 500, etc,
etc.

Take a look if you are interested:

Also, the engine that is on the engine stand is a supercharged V-8 from
the Shelby American Series 1.

Subject: RE: [uuc] <E34> Problem with a/c

Greg -

When my E34 began switching the a/c on and off by itself just prior to
expiry of warranty, I took it to the dealer. The first visit was after
the system had reset itself and resulted in an argument -- they could
not find a defect and I felt that for warranty purposes a defect had
been discovered. Fortunately, the next time the problem occurred, I got
to the dealer while it was still active. Without shutting the engine
off, they got the car onto their computer and discovered that they could
not "see" the a/c control computer. After a shutdown and restart, the
fault corrected itself and they could "see" the computer. They replaced
the computer and the problem has not recurred.

If your other checking does not reveal the problem, have someone with
MoDIC or better have a look at the computery stuff.

Subject: [uuc] <E34> Problem with a/c

The a/c compressor on my '94 530i will occasionally switch itself on and
then constantly cycle on and off with very short time delays between
cycles.
When this happens, the a/c button in the cabin lights up and I'm unable
to
turn it off. The sound from the compressor is also abnormal - more of a
whirring sound that changes pitch with the engine rpms - very distinct
from
what I am used to hearing. I've gotten around it by pulling the #9 fuse
(disabling the horn as well). Bentley mentions an a/c control module
and an
evaporator temperature sensor...would a malfunction in one of these
cause
these symptoms?

Thanks!

Subject: [uuc] A couple of E36 problems....

Greetings all!!
Lately I have had a couple of problems with my 95 325i
159K. First of all my fule guage needle went dead on
me the other day. Just out of no where. I'm assuming
this is the infamous fuel sending unit problem. I
would like to know how difficult it is to change this
and how much these units go for approx. I haven't
done any research on this problem and I figured I
would start here.
Secondly I have also had a problem with my factory
alarm sys. It also likes to go off when ever the hell
it wants to. I noticed that it goes off more when the
car is parked on a street that has a curve to it
therefore tilting the car sideways a bit. Our streets
here aren't totally flat and I noticed when the car's
in the flat driveway it doesn't go off. I figured the
problem might be one of the trunk sensors going bad?
I say this because when I'm driving and I go over a
big dip the lights flicker on and off very quickly so
I thought the two might be related. Could I be
correct with the trunk sensor thing or is it most
likely an alarm control module problem?? TIA for your
help!!

                           HOUSE BILL 2169

_____________________________________________

State of Washington 58th Legislature
2003 Regular Session

By Representatives Lovick, Ahern, Haigh, O'Brien,
Lantz, Dunshee, Dickerson, Sullivan, Hankins,
Morris, Wood, Romero, Kenney, Simpson, Quall,
McCoy, Cooper, Edwards, Berkey, Eickmeyer, Chase,
Hudgins, Flannigan, Miloscia and Moeller

Read first time 02/28/2003. Referred to Committee
on Transportation.

AN ACT Relating to regulation of race car
driving schools; adding a new chapter to Title 18
RCW; prescribing penalties; and providing an
effective date.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF
WASHINGTON:

     {+ NEW SECTION. +} Sec. 1.
FINDINGS--INTENT--SHORT TITLE. The legislature
finds that currently in the state of Washington,
race car driving schools are not subject to any
form of licensing or regulation. The lack of
oversight and industry accountability creates a
potential for the operation of unsafe equipment
and the employment of inconsistent safety
standards. Ashley Bergman, who was sixteen years
old, was killed while learning to drive a late
model division race car at a race car driving
school in Yakima, Washington. The death of Ashley
caused many to evaluate the safety standards and
emergency preparedness of these types of schools.

It was discovered in this evaluation that no state
in the United States regulates this industry and
most of the schools in Washington state operate in
the absence of critical safety policies and
practices, such as having standby emergency care
staff on the premises, and conducting regular
safety checks of the vehicle's equipment. It is
therefore the intent of the legislature to create
a regulatory environment in which race car driving
schools must operate in order that the consumers
of this industry will be assured that steps have
been taken to create a safe environment for them
to learn in. In memory of the tragic loss of
Ashley Bergman, this act shall be known as the
"Ashley Bergman Safety Act."

     {+ NEW SECTION. +} Sec. 2. DEFINITIONS.
The definitions in this section apply throughout
this chapter unless the context clearly requires
otherwise.
     (1) "Department" means the department of
licensing.
     (2) "Director" means the director of the
department of licensing.
     (3) "School" means race car driving school.
     (4) "Most recent standard" means standards
specified by a sanctioning body no more than six
months before the date of registration or
reregistration of a school, whichever is later.

     {+ NEW SECTION. +} Sec. 3. REGISTRATION
REQUIRED. (1) All race car driving schools
operating in this state must register with the
department and obtain a license to operate in this
state. The license is valid for a period of two
years. Applications for registration and
licensing must be on forms provided by the
department.
     (2) The director may require any information
and documentation that reasonably relates to the
need to determine whether the applicant meets the
criteria for registration and licensing provided
for in this chapter.
