The last time I was there was when I graduated in 1975...so I figured it would have grown by now. Sounds like not! <g>. For BMW content, I understand the Metric Mechanic shop is very near Rolla...I have a friend in KC that works there sometimes. For the life of me, I cannot ever remember seeing a BMW 2002 in the Rolla area back in the early to mid 70's....mostly saw VW Beetles..and I had an Opel GT....2002s were few are far between in the Midwest back then. You would only be able to tell which one was installed after part of the console was taken apart. Also only two were available from BMW - the other was to be flown in from Germany. Needless to say we opted to get it done by the dealer because it's his daily driver. The job (according to the mechanic) is pretty straightforward but requires a lot of time to dismantle dash/console to get at the core. You have to dump all of the coolant first to ensure that you don't get it all over the interior of the car. Job took about four hours, labor plus core and coolant flush. The core was not too expensive - approx $120CDN. (The German core was about twice that - but we were lucky) I would elect to do it myself, if I could take my time and had a heated garage to work in. Hope this helps a little. Ike You wrote: >I am beginning to smell coolant when the heater is on, I suspect the >heater core to be the culprit. How difficult is the heater core to >replace? Yes, there are things beyond your control when driving and yes, I do sometimes ride as a passenger (although even then I'm watching out for things in case I need to warn the driver.) But the fact that you *do* have control over some things when you *do* drive gives you the ability to increase your overall odds. You have no control over *anything* when flying (unless you're a pilot, obviously). - - Bill ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Mar 2003 19:36:32 -0800 From: "Brant" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Transmission Overhaul I have a transmission out of a 1988 M3 which I would like to rebuild. I would appreciate recommendations on either or both from list members. Does anyone know whether or not this transmission is well-covered on BMW's TIS CD?? The expansion/overflow tank is attached to the radiator on the driver's side. It is made of translucent plastic and contains the bleeder screw and radiator cap installed in a black plastic piece at the top. I have a slight leak that appears to be coming from the horizontal joint between the bottom of the translucent plastic tank and the black plastic of the radiator frame. I believe that there are several o-rings in this assembly (bleeder screw, cap, and connection(s) between translucent plastic and black plastic). The radiator was replaced with OEM Behr about two years ago. Can anyone tell me the logical places for the leak? I'm assuming that it is at an o-ring at the bottom joint between the translucent plastic tank and the black plastic radiator frame. Any other possibilities? Anyone had a leak at any o-rings? In the dark musty corner of my mind I recall the myth of saving 50% and Bosch makes replacements for either a 87 Ford/Mustang/Taurus 3wire and splice. I also concerned about the long term effect on the catalytic converter, which would be far more expensive than using OEM sensor. Would this be an acceptable procedure? Thanks, for any info. The car now whines. The more it revs, the louder it gets (although its not much louder midway through the rev range to redline). I hadn't driven the car much before the change, so I don't have a decent "before" frame of reference. Is it possible to over-tighten the timing belt? I didn't force anything, and rotated the crank by hand a few times before firing everything up. I let the tensioner seek out its own tension. If the timing belt is indeed too tight, can I loosen the tension, reset everything, and reuse the same belt? I've heard this is a no-no, but I've only driven the car for about 15 miles since the change. Also, someone on the E30 list mentioned the timing belt should be installed with the lettering facing the driver (i.e., if the driver were to look at the belt from in the car, he could read it). If the belt is installed the other way, it is prone to whining. I find this hard to believe, but....
