Any advice on how to mount an RD shift knob on to my E30 M3
would be appreciated. The sleeve is already inside the ball and
I can't get it off.

Thanks

Rob,

I understand what you said...UMR is a great school, but Rolla is still a
small rural "nothing to do" town....at least from what you say. The last
time I was there was when I graduated in 1975...so I figured it would have
grown by now. Sounds like not! <g>.

For BMW content, I understand the Metric Mechanic shop is very near Rolla...I
have a friend in KC that works there sometimes.

For the life of me, I cannot ever remember seeing a BMW 2002 in the Rolla
area back in the early to mid 70's....mostly saw VW Beetles..and I had an
Opel GT....2002s were few are far between in the Midwest back then.

Subject: [uuc] [E36 M3] Heater core

Hi William,

My son just had his heater core replaced on his 94 325is - we were going
to do it ourselves however:

There was a possible of THREE core types installed by the factory on his
car - I think Behr, Siemens and one other which I cannot recall offhand.

You would only be able to tell which one was installed after part of the
console was taken apart. Also only two were available from BMW - the
other was to be flown in from Germany. Needless to say we opted to get
it done by the dealer because it's his daily driver.

The job (according to the mechanic) is pretty straightforward but
requires a lot of time to dismantle dash/console to get at the core. You
have to dump all of the coolant first to ensure that you don't get it
all over the interior of the car.

Job took about four hours, labor plus core and coolant flush. The core
was not too expensive - approx $120CDN. (The German core was about twice
that - but we were lucky)

I would elect to do it myself, if I could take my time and had a heated
garage to work in.

Hope this helps a little.

Ike

I don't see anything in your post that refutes my logic. Yes, there are
things beyond your control when driving and yes, I do sometimes ride as a
passenger (although even then I'm watching out for things in case I need to
warn the driver.) But the fact that you *do* have control over some things
when you *do* drive gives you the ability to increase your overall odds.
You have no control over *anything* when flying (unless you're a pilot,
obviously).

Subject: [uuc] Transmission Overhaul

I have a transmission out of a 1988 M3 which I would like to rebuild.
It is a Getrag. All Data indicates it is a Getrag 265/6. I need
sources for parts and technical information, and maybe for specialty
tools. I would appreciate recommendations on either or both from list
members.

Does anyone know whether or not this transmission is well-covered on
BMW's TIS CD??

The 265/6 is the overdrive unit that has a detachable bell housing. It was
the standard transmission in the US E30 M3.

The TIS CD does NOT cover this trans. It has torque specs, at best.

Rebuild instructions are likely in the Factory Service Manual. You can
order a CD copy (thru the end of this month only) via
www.centrallettershop.com

Tranny rebuilding looks like half black art and half special tools. Good
luck!

Subject: [uuc] FW: (E34) 525i radiator leak

My '94 E34 525i has a radiator unlike any I've had in other cars. The
expansion/overflow tank is attached to the radiator on the driver's side. It
is made of translucent plastic and contains the bleeder screw and radiator
cap installed in a black plastic piece at the top. I have a slight leak that
appears to be coming from the horizontal joint between the bottom of the
translucent plastic tank and the black plastic of the radiator frame. I
believe that there are several o-rings in this assembly (bleeder screw, cap,
and connection(s) between translucent plastic and black plastic).

The radiator was replaced with OEM Behr about two years ago. Can anyone tell
me the logical places for the leak? I'm assuming that it is at an o-ring at
the bottom joint between the translucent plastic tank and the black plastic
radiator frame. Any other possibilities? Anyone had a leak at any o-rings?

Thanks for the help.

Dear fellow digesters,

I finally got to 64K on the odometer 1994 325ISA. CE coded 1221 oxygen
sensor, and I'll be in need of a 4 wire o2 sensor. In the dark musty corner
of my mind I recall the myth of saving 50% and Bosch makes replacements for
either a 87 Ford/Mustang/Taurus 3wire and splice. I also concerned about
the long term effect on the catalytic converter, which would be far more
expensive than using OEM sensor. Would this be an acceptable procedure?
Thanks, for any info.

For Sale:

Four 18" x 8.0" BBS RX rims, mounted with BF Goodrich street tires
235/40R18. One tire needs replacing (leak) the others are fine with 80%
tread remaining. Rims are $319 each plus shipping from tirerack, I'll sell
the set of wheels and tires for $1100 plus shipping. This set would cost
more than $2000 new!

Eight Kuhmo Ecsta V700 tires (two sets), never mounted, never used, size
235/40WR17, heat cycled by tirerack. Tirerack price $149 apiece plus (total
$624), I'll sell them for $500 per set of four plus shipping.

Subject: [uuc] Whine after changing timing and V-belts

I recently changed the all the belts on my '89 325is. The car now whines. The
more it revs, the louder it gets (although its not much louder midway through
the rev range to redline). I hadn't driven the car much before the change, so
I don't have a decent "before" frame of reference.

Is it possible to over-tighten the timing belt? I didn't force anything, and
rotated the crank by hand a few times before firing everything up. I let the
tensioner seek out its own tension.

If the timing belt is indeed too tight, can I loosen the tension, reset
everything, and reuse the same belt? I've heard this is a no-no, but I've
only driven the car for about 15 miles since the change.

Also, someone on the E30 list mentioned the timing belt should be installed
with the lettering facing the driver (i.e., if the driver were to look at the
belt from in the car, he could read it). If the belt is installed the other
way, it is prone to whining. I find this hard to believe, but....
