Subject: [uuc] E36 Coolant Temp Question

I noticed while driving our 94 325 today, that the temp gage was stuck
at the right edge of the blue band on the cold side of the scale. The
outside air temp was about 36. The air coming out of the vents seemed
warm enough. Given that the gage is OK, shouldn't it read about in the
middle? Could I have a thermostat stuck open? I would appreciate any
thoughts.

But, I agree with Jacques Villeneuvne, the new rules diminish the
importance of qualifing. Anyone can run a light fuel load and qualify
high. Or, as the back markers did, not qualify and run a different fuel
strategy. Kimi came in an refueled on the installation lap, giving up
track position and started from the pit lane, and, gee, came in second.
Your going to see this alot with the new qualifing rules, which take the
excitiment out of "searching for that exqusite lap" as quoted by David
Hobbs and Steve Matchet.

I don't see anything in your post that refutes my logic. Yes, there are
things beyond your control when driving and yes, I do sometimes ride as a
passenger (although even then I'm watching out for things in case I need to
warn the driver.) But the fact that you *do* have control over some things
when you *do* drive gives you the ability to increase your overall odds.
You have no control over *anything* when flying (unless you're a pilot,
obviously).

What part of "no spoiler" in the subject line did you not think applies to
mentioning where Kimi finished?!

Sorry for the stretch here but does anybody know a guy named Christopher
Erney? He had a business called E Design Group and produced some really
nice t shirts with different BMW's on them. The last address is Reston, VA.
If he is still in the business, please have him get in touch with me.

Subject: [uuc] <e36> o2 sensor

Hi George,

I had a similarly lit check Engine light on my wife's 94 325i a while
back.

I suspected it was the O2 sensor (since it had never been replaced - car
currently has 110K kms/66K miles)

The dealer price for part# 11 78 1 735 499 - was $130CDN and $39CDN to
install, before my 10% club discount - They confirmed the problem and
replaced the sensor - the car no longer has the annoying light on.
(Total cost $150CDN/$90US)

Incidentally - an equivalent "Bosch" sensor #13219 or 13310 or 13357 was
quoted at $126CDN. From my independent parts place. A "Walker" part
#250-2607 was quoted at $115CDN/$70US on the net - So the dealer won
hands down especially with the club discount and peace of mind knowing
they do a good job (at least my dealer does) plus the years warrantee.

YMMV
Thanks
Ike

Hey all,

I've a bent front strut housing. If I purchase the H&R Cup Kit, does anyone know
whether that will
come with replacement strut housings, or is it the shock inserts only.

Thanks!

Their kits for other cars come with the full housing. I did not know H&R
made a cup kit for the E30.

Any sources out there for custom cut headlight protective film? I've cut my
own in the past, but would prefer a custom fit one for the E46 M3.

Hi Kirk,

I have been using StonGard headlight protection. They can be found on the

From: Kurt Zimmerman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: [uuc] <E30 325is> Battery Drain

So I went away for 5 days and my lights were left on. I jumped the car
on my return and drove it home, but the next morning the battery was
dead. I went to the local NAPA store and had it fully charged and
tested. They said the battery was fine. The car sat for two days and
the battery was again dead. I took it to Autozone and again had it
fully charged and tested. They also said the battery was fine. The car
sat for two more days and the battery was again dead.

So currently I'm unhooking my battery if I don't plan on driving the
car. This is working fine, but I have to put up with the ECU
re-adapting every time I use the car and that's annoying.

So I looked for a drain. I hooked up test light between the negative
battery cable and the negative terminal. The light came on but the
trunk light was on. If I reached up and pressed the trunk light button
and both the light and the test light went out. But then something
strange happened. I disconnected the trunk light, and I was able to get
the test light to come on. Ahah!. I pulled fuses. Fuse 27 put the
light out. Great, but fuse 27 is the OBC, central locking , and radio.
Well we know that the OBC is going to cause drain, but how much? Now
I'm curious if I have an ultra-sensitive test light.

If I hook up a multi-meter between the negative battery cable and the
negative terminal, how much drain should I be seeing? If I'm reading
my multi-meter correctly it reads .3 A or 300mA. Is this a lot?

The fact that this started happening after I completely drained the
batter, makes me suspect the battery as the culprit, but if I unhook it
completely the battery holds its charge. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Kurt
