Clutch kit should cost $229. Labour should be between 6 and 8 hours. Additional work that should be done at the same time consists of engine rear main seal, trans input, output and selector shaft seals and guibo. Perhaps shifter bushings too. Seals and guibo would add about $125 in parts and 1.5 hours. Finally, if your flywheel is bad, add about $400. - ----------------------------------------------------- BMW Special Tool Rentals Pay per incident tech support - ----------------------------------------------------- Brett Anderson KMS (440) 338 1650 www.koalamotorsport.com OSS committee member - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Olivia Simantob" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Does anyone know how much it should cost to replace the clutch in a '93 > 325ic? This defective sensor should be replaced for free at a dealer, I believe regardless of the age or miles on the car. There might also be an ECU remap to accompany it, as there was one for the //M3. The remap did improve driveability bit so its worth having done. Any dealer service guys on the list who could provide BMW's exact age / mileage policy on this? It took BMW three years to debug the model. -John '96 318is ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2003 15:16:36 -0800 From: "Scott & Charlotte Miller" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Re: Buying older 3 series Neil, the E30 3 series cars are fairly durable. If your son is responsible enough to handle a car with a little power, an '89 or '90 325is, or a '91 325i Sport Package (same thing) would be a nice sporty choice. The '90s and '91s have a driver's side air bag. If you don't want to trust him with that much power, a '90 or '91 318is has similar handling (a little better, actually) and will also get better fuel economy. Both years have the driver's side air bag. All of these have ABS brakes. Some of the early E36 cars (1992 through 1995) are fun and fall within your budget range, but from what I've read here and in the Roundel, they have more maintenance issues than the E30. HTH. The oil can get into the spring mechanism, but that may just lubricate the mechanicals. Hi Olivia, one way to estimate the correct cost is to figure out the parts price, then add labor and mark up the parts cost. Bavarian Autosport (I'm not recommending them, just using their web site as a convient source) lists 2 kinds of replacement clutches for your car: Bav Auto complete replacement clutch kit = $234.95. Sachs Power Clutch complete kit (handles 25% more power, not that you need this) = $429.95. Let's assume you don't need to handle 25% more power. I don't know how much your shop marks up the parts, but lets assume 25%, bringing the parts cost to about $300, rounded up to include a few $$$ for the brake fluid that they'll have to bleed through the clutch hydraulic line. Assuming no surprises or extra work, figure 6 to 8 hours of labor. They have to drop the exhaust system and drive shaft and then remove the transmission before they even see the clutch. Assuming high at 8 hours at a labor rate of $80, that's $640. (Bill Arnold in San Rafael charges $80 per hour; Bavarian Professionals in Berkeley charges $90 per, but gives BMW Car Club members a 10% discount on the labor.) So, $1000 is not out of line. What might drive up the price? Flex disc (rubber donut between the transmission and drive shaft Drive shaft center support bearing Transmission rear seal Shifter selector shaft seal Shifter bushings and bearings Shift detent cover Transmission mount Finally, the surface of your flywheel could need resurfacing, or if worn too far, could need replacing. If they had to do ALL of those things, I suppose they could be north of $1500. As to why the clutch needs replacing, it is usually due to excessive clutch slippage. If not due to your driving, perhaps it was due to the driving of the previous owner. And the stiffness can sometimes be due to the clutch breaking (not just a wear issue), but it can be from other things too. After all of the above work is done, it should no longer be too stiff. IIRC, all smog-related components need to be warranted for at least 50K miles (sometimes more, although I'm not clear when it is "more"). Anything that will set a check engine light is smog-related. Have your friend look into this before paying for sensor replacement. Or else I'm just completely wrong.
