Sounds like it is time to upgrade to euro ellipsoids. You will be much
happier you spent the money ($300-$400 for both). Here is a link to
pictures/article of the ellipsoids,
http://www.eurospeedperformance.com/Articles/ellipsoiddebate.htm .
These will provide superior lighting and never fog up like the plastic
ones. It is one of the better upgrades I have done to my car.

Need to replace the driver's side headlight cover. Dealer says sold
only as the whole assembly and offers two replacement options: 1)
Assembly minus new bulbs and large bracket around back of entire unit -
$91.00 2) Assembly with bulbs (don't need them) and large bracket -
$165. Dealer says option 1) is a PITA to install, 2) is much easier.
Any thoughts/suggestions from anyone who has done this before? Is now
the time to upgrade to something better? Thanks!

Richard

Have you tried "Deinstall" in the ETK menu of Sysadmin? Or Install for that
matter, as this will usually delete any database it finds and reinstall it.

Subject: [uuc] E36 M3 Headlight Covers

Hi Richard,

I swapped out both complete headlight units on my son's 1994 325is last
week.
They were very easy to take out and to replace. Less than one hour -
total.

The rear frame on one of them was cracked and we also swapped that out
from another unit - just four long Phillips head self tapping type
screws. Make sure the plastic frame is properly seated onto the unit
when you screw the two pieces together.

Admittedly the unit part numbers differ from those of the M3 but there
should be great similarities between these two models.

The 325is uses 63-12-1-387-861 and 862 for right and left.

The M3 uses 63-12-8-363-493 and 494 for right and left. (I think)

Check out:

http://www.logun.org/ellipsoidinstall.htm

For a very good description (with pictures) on how to replace stock
headlights on the E36 with factory ellipsoids.

Perhaps someone else can chime in for a solution for a "better upgrade"

I hope this helps.

Ike

Actually - might be bigger - it is older (about 10 years now)
and LOTS of activity and interaction between the people (in person
nose to nose..)

It's the Internet BMW Riders (a virtual club, where everyone
is President)

Send him to: http://www.ibmwr.org - he can find out how to sign
up, plus browse the 'Marketplace'.. tell him to plan on spending
a few hours - there is lots to find on the site.

We get a number of HD converts a year.. so he won't be alone.

Can we get a vote on this one? I'm still wary!

Okay Rob, so how much running will it need? Are the
few minutes between dyno runs enough time to allow a
new Basic Motronic ECU to adapt? If it's plenty of
time, then chip comparisons we shall make! (not quite
Yoda, but getting there)

Will ya settle for a 6500 RPM eta engine with no
modifications but an i cam, valve springs, and 3 extra
holes in the head? : -)

I've got to pipe up for The Braddler here - a 528e with a 5-speed
(not to mention his stump-puller diff) will get out of its own way.
Within the limited rpm range, there is a fair amount of torque.

Ask me how I know... ;-)

Damned if I can remember - it's been a few years since I pulled an
E28 DME... although I might again soon.

Have to stick with Brad on this one. I ran a 325es on the track for
2 years and I ran down porsches, M3s, and many other more heavily
endowed vehicles. Eta's can be quick little beasties.... Besides..
it's a great learning car, you have to do everything right to keep
from getting run over.

I mean, if you don't have to worry about throttle modulation, that's
that much more attention that can be used to drift through the corner
more gracefully :)

Instructor: OK, you can give it more throttle, more throttle, more throttle...

Me: What? Did you think I ever let off the accelerator?

Rob.

Proud owner of an 89 325-I-s

Would have kept the eta, cept it and I ended up at the bottom of a
creek bed one icy winter night.
