Now that the weather has broken (finally) in Boston,
I'm thinking of a different suspension setup for my
E34 (92 535i). What's the ticket (cost is a factor)
for sporting street use in an area with LOTS of
potholes and frost heaves? Also, I'd like to consider
changing to 17" wheels, sticking with BMW OE if
possible. These would be summer use only. Idees?
Anybody have a good deal on parts?
Jon

I agree with Kathy Lyle (BTW, hi Kathy....bet you don't remember me from
Bavarian Motor days) that Just BMW in Fairfax is a good bet as is the "new"
Bavarian Motors on Reading Rd. near downtown. Both do quality work at
reasonable rates. Its a shame that Montgomery Motorsport went out of biz
(they were great). If you need telephone numbers, let me know.

I would use factory MTechnic springs, Koni shocks and M5 wheels. Also use
M5 thrust arm bushings or 750i ones for a little more cushion. A front
strut bar and factory camber compensating strut mounts are good upgrades.
245/45R17 tires are popular for Mustangs and have good selection. If you
prefer 16 inch, a set of E38 16x8 wheels is a good fit also, use 225/55R16
tires.

Note: 225/55 and 245/45 tires are the same width. 45 and lower tires are
measured on wider rims so one must add 25mm (for this comparison) to 35mm
(for wider tires such as 245/50 to 275/40) to compare.

Speaking of the Sparco bar, I bought one for my E30 325i cabrio, and
it looks like it will fit fine between the towers, but I'm a little worried
about interference with the throttle/cruise cables, which seem to be
routed right through where the bar would be (not an issue in my M3).
Has anyone installed one of these, and if so, how did you deal with
the cables?

Thanks,
John

The Sparco web site shows four part numbers for E30 bars, 3674, 3675,
3676 and 3677. The first three are aluminum and the last is the steel
one most folks on this forum think of when they hear of a Sparco bar. It
only is shown as fitting the M3.

I am trying to find out why there are all these numbers. Racer's prices
from the web site range from $96 for the steel to $275 for the most
expensive of the aluminums.

I installed the ~$100 steel bar in my '89 325is. I tried to bend the
cruise control cable housing very carefully while it was still
connected. Bad idea, as I didn't have as good a grip as I thought and
ended up putting pressure on the 13 year old plastic that snaps into the
metal support. The plastic broke instantly. I bought a new CC cable
and pre-bent the metal housing before installation. I was very careful
to make sure that the metal did not crimp anywhere. I also rotated
cable 90 degrees downward and rerouted the cable. I now have about 1/8"
of clearance.

I have read claims that all this effort should not have been necessary,
but it was the only way to make it work on my car.

I have a 1989 E34 535i that many people say is the best handling limo
they've had the pleasure of driving in. Its got Eibach Pro-Kit springs,
Bilstein HD shocks, KMAC camber plates back and front, adjustable sway bars
and a real trick 3 point strut tower brace. Even with stock 15" wheels and
tyres there are very few cars that turn in and maintain corner speed as well
as this old girl........ :-)

Their tire rep claimed their A032R lookalike (which I think the event cars
were running) had been on the market outside the US before the A032R, but a
treadwear rating of 200 seems a little too high for a really sticky tire.

The karting was IMO about the best part of the whole event. Another $10
for 4 minutes, but the karts were fairly quick for a clutch-kart, the track
was short but fun, and the airport concrete surface was WAY grippy.

I ran something in the low-36s with the transmission in 'drive' (in that
flavor it was always one gear higher than I wanted it to be) didn't bother
waiting for the second run - they were well behind schedule and it just
wasn't worth waiting in line for an hour.

. coasting with the engine off is illegal in many states.

The biggest secret is to jack up the rear suspension so the car always
drives downhill and stop watching so much NASCAR.

Gary Derian

Ahh Hah. Knew there had to be a secret technique. Jacking up the rear end
has resulted in much greater fuel economy per speedo indicated miles,
probably due to the effect of gravity pulling it down hill, but also because
of the reduced air resistance as the car sits in the garage doing 30mph. As
a bonus it allows one to go in the house for a cup of coffee and to check
the latest race-to-Baghdad results while running the rally. Thanks Mr.

my car has gc camber plates, so adjustment isn't a big deal. with the race
springs and the car on jackstands, there is no load whatsoever on the strut
top. even with the adjusters, the least amount of camber i can get on the
right side is 3 deg, so pushing the strut back out is a good thing.

brett is likely right. this car probably should have had a bar earlier in
its race life, or maybe it took a hit on the right side when it was a street
car. brett, you know this car, it use to be geeze's rustoleum yellow
special! (hey, i can hear you laughing!)

i am letting the car hang for a while and may try ed's bumper jack idea.
will check out the ireland shorty bar to see how much shorter it is. hoping
to avoid the hassle of sending this bar back to evosport and ordering
another one.

Hi Charlie! I didn't know you were on this list. Of course I remember you,
but it's your brother whose name I can't recall. Note to all: he can get you
out of a traffic ticket if you get caught speeding through Cincinnati, while
Charlie will prosecute you for your other crimes!

Kim, I haven't ridden or driven your car so I can't evaluate it, but in my
experience, Bilstein sport struts bottom out all the time when used with a
lowered E34. Your HDs, which are longer, must be worse. Bilstein bump
stops can be fixed, but their damping is too weak for stiffer than stock
springs. Nearly perfect for stock springs though.
