It's interesting if you have a bit of patience. It's not worth it if
you just need to get out & race. I like the idea about taking a cocky
buddy who needs a lesson. :)
Keep in mind that the car responds slowly accelerator & tranny-wise.
I shifted manually from 1-2 well before redline and yet it was
bouncing off the rev limiter before it finally shifted into 2. Also,
oversteer is pretty much out of the question. Not at all like my e30.
I didn't see anyone spin all day.

My shop is in my back yard. It's 80' from the house, so fire code is not a
requirement.

All walls are done in 3/8" ply. Why? Convenience. Stupid? Maybe. Just
don't burn shit near the walls. Main advanges are; no accidental holes and
no looking for studs when you want to hang a hook or shelf, just screw on
in.

All wiring is BX, less likely to get eaten by mice and short. Gas lines are
restricted to one corner. Welder is used in the open centre of the shop,
away from the walls, NO INCANDESCENT BULBS in the shop. No smoking in the
shop. No problem.

Hell, if it burns down, I'll take the opportunity to go get a real job and
earn some money for once.

But that's because you don't have the solenoid in place. The 328i with M3
exhaust will have the entire system in place, except the flap. You have
NONE of the system in place.

Brad... so sorry to hear about your car! Glad to hear that you are ok!
For grins, there is a speed calculator here...

 http://www.harristechnical.com/skid33.htm

It estimates your speed at 47-50mph .. but it probably has
some inaccuracies... ... looking at the damage, I agree,
impact was probably 20 mph or so... Reparing the car is
indeed probably not a good option, but parting it may be...

Posting the p/r online should not be a problem, it *is*
a matter of public record, and anyone with your name and
$3-10 can obtain it.. I do think it would be in good
taste to white out some of the personal data however.

Good luck with the car search, let me know offline if you
have any claims related issues..

I'll bet it is more accurate than you might think. The speed of impact
was probably 20 mph, after the speed was scrubbed off by the locked up
brakes. What's up with that, anyway. Why aren't there breaks in the
rubber streaks where the ABS took over?

Btw, since this thread has come up again, what is a fair price for a
good nearly new //M3 takeoff exhaust system? (~15k miles)?

For Sale: E36 //M3 factory exhaust, ~15 k miles, nice upgrade for
smaller E36 6 cyl engines. Factory fit and quality.
Does $225. sound reasonable? For pickup or delivery in SF Bay area.
 Installation or workspace available.

A pretty slim budget leaves me with no choice other than to buy factory
look-alikes. I've found this place on eBay (www.highlinewheels.com) and
wondered if any of you group members had any experience with them.

Anyone?

Except the 4 ft. shop lights are junk. They buzz and burn up in a few
months. Plus they don't work in the cold.

I must have missed a post. 100ft skid, then a 20 mph crash means you
applied the brakes at 54 mph. If this was in a 35, you will get the ticket
not the guy that pulled out. The reconstructionist (if one gets hired) will
likely opine that the other guy would have missed you if you had been
driving at the limits. Ask me how I know this.

The tire calculator assumes there was some form of
tread on the tire to help scrub off speed. Imagine
the friction of an ice cube on asphalt, and you'll be
pretty close to the friction coefficient of my front
left tire.

Of course, I know nothing about tires and am suffering
from a neck injury, so what do I know.

Well,

Couldn't get everything sorting out after replacing the radiator and looked
at the t-stat (among other things). Lots of oil in the coolant. So I'll be
doing some tear down and evaluation in the next few weeks. I'll be
optimistic and shoot for just rebuilding the cylinder head. If any of you
have advice, recommendations, parts feel free to drop me a line.

And if anyone in central MS wants to participate in a cylinder head
teardown....

Cheers,

Roland

I know practically nothing about your crash, I'm merely playing devil's
advocate. I do reconstruction like this for a living. If your skid was
made by a single tire, the calculations will be different. Tread does not
improve traction on dry pavement.
