Sorry Kevin (and others). Let me clarify. The adjuster probably hasn't even been contacted, much less gone out there to look at the car. For all we know, the insurance company may think the car just has a broken headlight or something. The reason I think it's a total is that the frame rails are SHOT. There's no repairing them. If the car gets fixed, they better be prepared to find a good front clip from somewhere. I'm talking A-pillar forward. If they do that, they'll have to pull the engine, tranny, and EVERYTHING under the hood. Talk about $$$$$$ in labor. Even if the ins. co. thought my car was worth $7k, they'd probably still total it. A few weeks ago a guy showed up for an open track day with a 325eS wearing a different size tire on one front wheel. Said he had just bought the car a week before, had heard the track was a good place to see what it could do. (I encouraged him to come out to a CCA driving school, properly shod of course.) He said the only symptom of the mismatched tire was on the freeway above 80mph, he could hear the ABS cycling. He was expecting to get a new set of wheels and tires real soon... - -- Bob Sutterfield '87 E30 325iS http://bmwe30.net #1129 DAS KAR '88 E28 535iS http://m535i.org #154 IHR FUNF '93 T4 EV MV Weekender BELUGA BMWCCA #169277 Rocky Mountain Chapter ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Apr 2003 21:42:29 -0800 From: "T WALROD" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] ABS question Any idea what the allowable % difference in circumference might be? It would have to be large enough to not disable ABS due to wheel speed difference in a corner - or perhaps the ABS computer compares wheel speed side to side - actually if the concern of the ABS computer is only that a wheel speed not go to zero relative to it's fellows it would seem that the allowable sensor wheel speed difference, and thus allowable tire circumference difference could be fairly gross. Or you could push your luck and make your trip more interesting. I have a friend that seem to always go off on a trip to some other state, but to end with some sort of car trouble. Even though he usually doesnt get to his destinations, he always ends up making some sort of friend in some small town out in the middle of no where. I think he actually enjoys breaking down. Occasionally the cheapskate would rent a car if it was important for him to get wherever. For a shadetree wrench working with only a set of jackstands, it's going to make some sort of mess no matter what you do. I've found that just yanking the plug is probably the worst thing to do because the shape of the opening and the volume of liquid contained in the block will cause it to gush out in an irregular and uncontrolled stream that will elude any catch container you have underneath. However, you can loosen the plug, then hold it against the port as a means to control the flow of coolant coming out. This can result in a somewhat manageable stream that can be caught with a bucket. I did this last time and was able to catch most of the coolant with the bucket instead of the garage floor! Your arms may get tired if the drain takes a long time, but any stray coolant should be confined to small streams that may run down your arm or the block. Much preferable to a coolant dousing. They were NOT imported to Canada or the USA. When BMW switched from the E30 to E36 in late '90, they continued to make the E30 touring & cabrio for a few more years until the respective versions of the E36 were manufactured. I live in Switzerland and have a '90 325i Touring, great to have a "wagon that hauls". The touring benefits from many of the updates to the E30 (shadow line trim, lithium boards in the instruments, elipsoid headlights, later style electrical connectors, body color bumpers & outside mirrors, illuminated electric window switches, etc.). >From the standpoint of bringing one to the US as a grey market car, it would be possible. Some advantages: 1) All gasoline engine tourings were catalyzed cars from the factory. 2) The engine & rest of the car is essentially the same mechanically as their equivalent US verions (318iS, 325i & 325iX). 3) Most Federalizing parts would be "plug & play" such as speedo, headlights, etc. Door beams were not (yet) in European cars of this vintage, they became law around the mid-1990's. Practically you may not have all the options on a Euro car compared to a US car. For a car up to 1989, you don't need driver side air bag (optional in Europe). From 1990 and later, you MUST have this. Retrofits are possible but expensive. To import, you will still need a registered importer (RI)/ federalizer A/C is not always on the cars as well. Depending on what you want, you have lots of choice in Switzerland. I was trying for the ultimate, 325iX touring with low miles, settled for a 325i with only 72.000 km on the clock. It literally DID belong to an old guy. There is a 325iX touring with A/C and sunroof at a garage near the house, can't recall year. 250.000 km on it, but it just passed the Swiss tech visit, even tougher than German TV. I would look for a 325i touring (pre 90 with any options) or (90 & later with air bag). The later years (91-93) tended to more loaded as BMW was "clearing out their parts bins". Let me know if I can help or anwer more questions, Greg in Geneva _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: smart spam protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ------------------------------ End of [uucdigest] V3 #6271 *************************** | | In memory of Michel Potheau - friend, enthusiast, founder of the BMW CCA. |________________________________________ | Please visit these UUC-approved BMW parts vendors/service providers: | (listed alphabetically) | | Autoscope-Motorsports - http://www.autoscope-motorsports.com | |==================================================== | | Koala MotorSport .
