Some pistons are pretty dished. Other than fluid lock, I was also concerned that any gunk that might be put into solution would simply now be deposited in and around the top rings and lands as the fluid drains into the oil pan. Just doesn't seem like a good technique unless the solvents are drained. - -Kevin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2003 13:50:33 -0400 From: TR <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] [E34] M5 won't start Mike, possible starter motor. How many/how big are the kids? :^) Cool, that sounds less expensive then a timing chain! I've replaced starters before - in Fords, though. I suppose I need a 'special tool' to do this on a BMW .... I guess it's time to get a repair manual. I was just told that Bentley's does not make one specifically for the M5 - what's the next best thing? > (Disclaimer: I have no idea if push-starting an M5 is a good idea.) For the tracks you know, grade them on an A,B,C,D, F scale (where A=best and F=failing) for: 1. Overall Course Layout 2. Course Safety 3. Overall Course Condition 4. Facility amenities 5. Overall facility condition I will make the overall average report-card scores available to those that want (but will remove individual names and specific scores). Hope you find this interesting. rtb ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2003 14:19:05 -0400 From: "Felix Vicente" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] Survey - used lease car v. used "rental' car I've been naughty with some rental cars, but I've been so good to some too. I rented a Volvo S70, 8k miles, in San Fran. First few times I turned it off I would get some dieseling, knocking, whatever you wanna call it. Odd, I thought. Did it stop me from driving the thing? noooo. So then the oil pressure light starts coming on during right hand turns. All right, let's pop the hood....dipstick didn't even register oil. Had to put 5 quarts of oil in that puppy. Did I stiff the rental co with the oil bill? no. Then there was the poor Discovery I got in New Jersey, 1k miles on it, 2 days before the first true snowstorm I had ever been in (Atlanta snow doesn't really count- always <6" and it's gone by the next AM.) Car was slower than molasses- until we got 9" of snow. Suddenly I was in the fastest car around, just because no one else could really take off from a red light. <evil grin>. My boss and I were having serious fun in the parking lot late one night until I made the mistake of letting him drive. Next thing I know, we side swipe a tree. Luckily, no body damage, just a lot of scratches. $10 for rubbing compound and some of that "black" wax, drive it around for a few days to get it nice and slushy to cover it all up, and the rental company didn't even notice. Some rental companies do maintenance, or at least used to. The first car my parents bought in the states was an '81 Olds Cutlass Supreme, from Avis. Handed it down to a great uncle, and the car ran just fine until 1999. Granted, they don't make GMs like they used to (poor gas tank design notwithstanding), but still, sometimes you just get lucky. Every rental car I've been in with more than 20k miles had at least one issue. 40k and they're ready for the junk heap. Owning a car is no guarantee you'll maintain it. My current boss bought a Sequoia in Jan. 2002 with about 25k miles on it. He has not changed, or even CHECKED, the oil to date. And yes, he owns it. but seriously, guys, when are you gonna come across a BMW ex-rental car? just stay away from the 5-10k mile "executive demos" (read: ex-service loaners and ultimate drive cars) and you'll be fine. <OBMWC> :) - -felix miami,fl 97 540/6 driven hard but not put away wet 98 740 I'm the only one that takes it over 3k rpm 95 525 garage queen ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2003 13:22:04 -0500 From: Dennis Wynne <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] has your V1 ever.... Rich's finding match my own. My V1s have gone off when I was being "lased" or while travelling in a pack where they got someone else. I have seen them on the side of the road and warning did not go off as well. I don't know if they were shooting and the V1 missed it or if he was just aiming. It truly is an evil weapon :-) I too think the V1 is the only way to go. I've heard before that CPOing a car doesn't mean sh!t. I've even heard this from guy who work at dealers (not just BMW either). I think they prolly throw the car through a basic inspection, add $1500+ to the price & throw it on the lot. I think maybe you could use Gary D's lake test on a leased/rented car with great success..... When I returned the cars I leased, they were only looking for wrecks & tire tread depth. After all, what are they going to find? If they have a modern car with 36k on it & it was redlined for 2 minutes at cold start everyday think they'll notice? What about an abused clutch or a munched gearbox? I like Gary's idea of meeting the wife & kids... What we ended up with was a Pathfinder that was absolutely miserable but I digress. When we stopped to get provisions for the race (about 300 miles from home), we were bored and opened the hood. To our surprise, the oil filler cap was off and lying in the fenderwell. Dutifully, we placed the filler cap in it's correct postion and continued on our journey. You rented an S70 with 8K miles? That's awfully high miles for one of the "heritage" collection cars, IMHO. You should have charged them for the oil - it's the rental agency's responsiblity to maintain the vehicle. Either charge them for the oil or don't add any and let the motor eat. - --- Felix Vicente <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I've been naughty with some rental cars, but I've been so good to > some too. > > I rented a Volvo S70, 8k miles, in San Fran. He was selling it to buy a new M5. It might have all been a setup, but the car was and is great.
