Funny correlary to that story...

There is a used-car dealer on ebay whose auctions look just like
personal car auctions; phrases like "must sell our baby" and "we will
miss this gem" are accompanied by pictures of the car in the driveway
of a beautiful McMansion in a Virginia suburb.

The ruse is revealed when you click "view sellers other auctions" and
see several cars... all of which will be missied greatly, all
photographed in the same driveway.

Brilliant and slimy at the same time.

I don't think Gary bought his M5 from this particular dealer.

Group,

Anyone know of a good procedure to check out a differential that has
already been removed from a vehicle? Aside from rotating freely and
clean oil is there a way to check gear lash, input bearing condition
etc.? I assume that you can check the LSD breakaway torque by holding
one flange steady and using a torque wrench on the other? Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

Next time you find yourself in that predicament, call me. I bought
my last V1 used, so I have money for drinks. I promise to tell you
how it worked out in the morning.

No kidding! I bought an original Escort from Dean B. on this list
for sentimentality's sake. These days, it looks like a prop from an
original Frankenstein movie - both in size and the lab-equipment
needle gauge. I have it on top of my monitor, it lets me know when I

I did the Bondurant 3 day school two years ago in Phoenix. Ran Mustang
Cobras, one with instrumentation and had Darren Law as an instructor
(currently running a BMW powered Pichio (sp?) in Grand Am). Got six hours of
track time each day. Darren would ride with you when you needed the feedback
and run against you when he was not coaching someone.

By the same token it is much more difficult to use because it has to be

There is a very, very small but real chance that you'll pick up the laser
when the car right in front of you gets hit with the beam. And you might
get lucky that the officer just focuses on the car in front and fails to
notice that you were going the same speed directly behind. So I wouldn't
say that a laser detector is useless. But close.

Ah the old what is a Coupe arguement. The standard definition is a two door
car with two seats and a solid roof. No mention of pillars, but two seats is
usually specified but not always. Actually there is no standard definition.
Your definition fits what in the US used to be called a hardtop, available
in the 50s and 60s in two and four door models.

coup (ku-pa')
n.
A closed four-wheel carriage with two seats inside and one outside.
also coupe (kup). A closed two-door automobile.

03 W209 - 2 door, B pillarlesss 4 passenger car, The manufacturerr calls it
a coupe but they called the preceding W208 model a coupe too and it had B
pillars. I don't call either a coupe I call 'em 2 door sedans or hardtops
but what do I know.............

I went to this show on Sunday and was in awe. Anyone else go? There was a
57 BMW 507 there! I've never seen one anywhere before. I couldn't walk away
from it. Incredible car. BMW did a fantastic job with making the Z8 a
kickback to that car. Fantastic job, I'm telling you...the damn thing was so
similar I couldn't believe it. There was also a 320 Turbo with all the body
cladding....M stripe paint...beautiful. Lots of other beauty's
there....ferrari's, bugatti's, aston martin's, and on and on. I'll try to
post some of the photos on a URL so ya'll can see the 507.

Subject: [uuc] Survey - used lease car v. used "rental' car

When I bought my 1995 M3 in May 1999 (slippery slope since), it was my first BMW,
furthermore, it was my first used car since my very first car (which I bought off my
brother-in-law and knew the entire history) when I was 16 and I had never even driven
a BMW let alone rear wheel drive (other than trucks) but I knew I had lusted after the
E36 M3 since 1994 and that cover of Car & Driver with the yellow M3. So, I knew
basically nothing. But, it was a CPO car at a reputable BMW dealer and the minute I
saw it I wanted it. The car was flawless, in, out, underneath, etc. While test
driving it, I looked in the glove box when I was in the parking lot and found the
prior owner's info in the manual including their home phone and address. So, I called
them and talked to them about the car. Turned out, it was there third car and his
wife had a 318ti slushbox that she drove out of convenience and he had a new 7 series
and didn't like the stiff ride of the M3 so it primarily sat whi!
ch explains why it had 12k miles in a four year lease. They liked the car but didn't
care to drive manual and didn't like the stiffer ride. Also, the maintenance that was
recorded (as little as it was), was all proper.

So, during the test drive, I got a little excited at an inserection where I was
stopped and punched the gas a little when pulling away in a right turn. The rear end
dutifully stepped out as I went intersection the turn, I straightened her up as I
gained momentum and quickly saw the blue/red lights in my rear view. The cop was
hiding under a bridge nearby and was watching me closely as I had driven down the
street to the stop sign.

After telling the cop what the situation was (test driving the car, etc.) and he was
back in his car doing his thing, I told myself that if I didn't get a ticket, I was
putting a down payment on the car that night, if I got a ticket, it was bad juju and I
would walk away. I ended up putting down a deposit that night.

I then drove past the old owners house in Hudson, Ohio (a very nice area in Ohio) on
my way home. Sure enough, the story of the prior owner checked out and they lived in
a very nice home and their cars in the driveway were immaculate.

So that is the boring story of my first step off the slippery slope of BMW ownership.

Later,

Rich
