I could see that kind of damage if he was towing an overly heavy load or
abusing the vehicle offroad, but kind of doubt that's the case. Being that
I like to screw with liars, here's what I'd do: Get them to give that list
in writing. Take it to another dealer or independent shop to see if it
still holds true. If not a quick letter with a copy of both estimates would
likely result in some heads rolling......

A BMW dealer tried to do this to me years ago. I had just had new Eibach
springs & Blistein sports shocks installed--like within a couple hundred
miles. I took the car to the dealer for a new front hub in a pinch (whole
other story of incompetence there). I knew it was a faulty wheel bearing &
they new I knew. Still, they called me telling me that I needed an entirely
new suspension, which would run me almost $5400 (I already owed $200 for
this inspection that I didn't ask for). The guy told me, "yea, I'm
surprised you even got here". I asked him if he'd done the hub--no, he
didn't have the parts that 3 separate people had promised was there. Very
angry I told him I was going to come get the car--to which he responded that
he couldn't let the car leave the dealer as the suspension was in such bad
shape it wasn't safe for me to drive--especially since the shocks were so
badly failed!!!!

I slammed down the phone & about five minutes later stormed into the service
area, which at the time was perfectly visible to a packed Saturday afternoon
sales floor. I walked in & demanded my keys--which he (and I have to admit
much to my pleasure) refused. He told me the car wasn't safe. I yelled,
"you obviously didn't even put this car on a lift, or you would have seen
that the suspension you say isn't safe is new." His face dropped. I said,
"there are brand new Yellow Bistein shocks in there, there's no way you
could've missed that." The service writer: "bu...bu....bu...." Me: "and
now you tell me that you did a $200 inspection I didn't ask for & try to
hold my car hostage for $5400 worth of work it doesn't need? How many BMW
owners do you rip off this way?" By now salespeople are scurying to get
customers out of earshot & the service manager is running with my keys
apologizing for the incident & that I can have me keys & go. That was a
good 30k before I finally decided the suspension needed to be done.

I called BMW NA about the whole thing, & they couldn't care less. The guy
on the phone told me to quit wasting his time. I guess they condone ripping
off customers. Maybe in your friend's case Toyota will care.

Hello everyone:

I was wondering if anyone has had similar problems with their vehicles. My
car is currently in the shop and they are trying to diagnose the problem.
The
symptoms are:

1) when starting cold- idle would be lower than usual, sometimes dip to
around 500rpm, causing the car to shake, almost stalling.
2) after driving for a while (either highway or local) and coming to a stop,

the idle would sometimes drop to or a bit under 500rpm, causing the car to
shake, etc. Sometimes the car would stall if I don't keep the rpm up.
3) trying to accelerate from stopping, the car would hesitate and only move
a
little, until I hit the throttle hard enough, when it would regain
"consciousness". Not fun when crossing streets where the cross traffic
doesn't have to
stop!
4) occasionally, the same hesitation would occur while the car is moving,
between 2,000-2,500 rpm.

Thank you in advance for reading!

Only 230k miles ? HOW can you even think of getting rid of her ?? Old
BMWs NEVER die ...go at once to your local wrecking yard and buy good
condition USED parts and refurbish her .
Question ..WHY does it need a 'new driveshaft '? ..sure it isnt just the
centre-bearing going bad ? There are places specialise in rebuilding
driveshafts (driveline services in Portland Ore for one
..www.driveshafts.com/bmw )and usually have replacements in stock .They
have replaceable/greaseable U-joints too !! Something BMW HATES you to
know.
You are kind-a stuck on the exhaust as it is apparently illegal for
wrecking yards to sell used cat converters (they collect them and
recycle --that way those expendy catalytic elements like platinum get
recovered )..so you'll end up buying one elsewhere . JC Whitney used to
sell cheap generics ..have local welder put it in for you .
Word of advice ..Plan and Do the exh and driveline at same time ..they
inhabit the same piece of real estate under the car so dont do
remove-replace twice

Front control arms shouldnt break the bank .lots of parts-houses stock
them ..try http://www.topendperformance.com they seem to have good
prices/delivery ....I ordered parts for my 'new' 238k mile 325e there
yesterday (incl a driveline bearing !!) .
Keep the old ones running!!

Bill & Shirley Proud,34 yrs messing with BMWs ..old ones !!
Tennessee..winters, Seattle..summers
Long commute in between .

I flew into Dusseldorf a few times in 2000.
Hertz had some 911s on the lot. I didn't have
the balls to upgrade from my Golf TDI as I was
on contract and didn't want my customer to see
me driving a 911, even if I was paying the
difference myself.

The TDI went mile after mile on the Autobahn
at 205kph. Flat on the floor.

Could be a fuel leak, too. My 528e did this before I
did the 5-speed conversion. It wasn't
transmission-related, but I replaced a lot of the fuel
lines and vacuum hoses once I did the conversion.

Definitely check for vacuum leaks. If you haven't
done it in the past few years, replace all of the fuel
lines under the hood, too. An afternoon job.

NOPD arrested 4 perps and are looking for 2 more who
had a very sophisticated operation. They would pick an
upscale vehicle, preferably GM, get the VIN, then forge
registration papers and a matching driver's license. (No
big problem with a computer - hey, people use them to
make $20 bills). Then to a GM dealership where they
would order new keys, then steal the car. They specialized
in stuff like Vettes/Escalades/loaded GMC pickups. Seems
some GM dealerships weren't too inquiring with 20-something guys getting
new keys.
