Avis, Hertz, Dollar, National, etc., are all represented in Germany but finding a BMW from them is more difficult. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Try Dan Chrisman at the above address. He is slow to communicate but he always comes through with very "interesting cars" to rent. He supplies the summer CCA driving school at the Nuerburgring, for example. Prices are very good too. This is not his main business, so be patient and contact him early. Otherwise, the AutoEurope agency is a very good option to the big American companies. They are everywhere in Europe and have access to luxo/sporty cars (pricey). http://www.autoeurope.com/luxury.cfm You might want to keep an open mind about renting a BMW. I have had a lot of fun driving cars we would never see in the States such as Peugeot, Renault, a diesel Golf 6sp (pulls like a train), but especially Alfa. Alfas are available at a much better price than BMWs and they offer some really nice handling cars in hatch or sport sedan format. The V6s are particularly desirable. They would pick an upscale vehicle, preferably GM, get the VIN, then forge registration papers and a matching driver's license. (No big problem with a computer - hey, people use them to make $20 bills). Then to a GM dealership where they would order new keys, then steal the car. They specialized in stuff like Vettes/Escalades/loaded GMC pickups. Seems some GM dealerships weren't too inquiring with 20-something guys getting new keys. Matt, you didn't mention which part of the exhaust is cracked, or whether you need upper or lower control arms. But let's add it up: Drive shaft: $300 to have rebuilt, 1 hour labor to replace AFTER the exhaust is out. Flex disc: $70 parts including bolts and nuts, labor included in driveshaft (could be cheaper, there are 2 sizes) Center support bearing: $75 (guess) part, $20 to get it pressed on the drive shaft, labor included in driveshaft Upper Control arms: $270 parts including bushings ($135 each), not sure about labor, guessing 2 hours (1 each) Lower Control arms: $152 parts incl bushings (65 per arm, 11 per bushing), not sure about labor, guessing 2 hours (1 each) Down pipes: $100 parts assumed, can't find in Bav Auto web site, guessing 1.5 hours to replace Cat: $490 parts including installation kit, guessing 1 hour to replace Muffler: $150 parts including installation kit, guessing 1 hour to replace (Assuming you have a couple of gallons of Liquid Wrench on hand for removing the exhaust...) (I bet if you had to do the whole exhaust system, it could be done in 2.5 hours total.) If you're able to do your own labor, total parts and services is $1,627. If you have to hire it out, 7.5 hours labor, assuming $90 per hour labor, total labor is $675. (Adjust for your local labor rate.) Total parts and labor would be $2,302. Ouch! Kelley Blue Book private party value for a 1986 528e 5 speed (?) with 230K miles is $1,935, assuming excellent condition and zip code 94583 (mine). Alternatives: You might be able to have the old exhaust welded up for maybe $100? That would save you $740 in parts and $125 in labor. Now let's talk about the emotional part. Do you really love the car? Can you see yourself driving it for at least another 3 years? How is the engine? How is the paint? If this is your dream car and you think it is a keeper, then it might be worth spending more than its current value to fix it up. On the other hand, wouldn't you really rather put the money towards, oh, say, a 1988 535is with 200K miles for, oh, say, $2,840 (KBB again)? I would. And you should be able to recover at least $500 by parting out your 528e, not to mention that it will be your new hobby. Kind of like the monster garage when they take the car apart, before putting the new parts in to convert it into the monster du jour. Hey, if all else fails, just flip a coin. Oops, wait. You asked for advice from a wise sage. Sorry, never mind, just ignore this. Chris, the E31/E34 wheels will be hubcentric on your E24. But I'm not sure what your 75/72mm measurememts represent. That is almost 3 inches. It is too much to be offset, and too little to be the wheel's rim width. I ran 15x7 E32/E34 wheels on my E28 535i - same hub opening and bolt pattern as your E24.
