I have the same model, and I think my OE straps aren't up to the task
anymore. I have to make sure the top folds correctly now as it stows.
It never does it quite correctly on its own like it did 7 years ago.
Replace them.
While your attention is back there, lube the arms that rub against
each other atop the motor (underneath the sheet metal shield). Check
all the fasteners around there as well. No sense having the thing
tear itself apart now!

Just remove both nuts. Unplug the AFM. Undo the clamp to the intake
hose. Undo the finger-fasteners on the rear that hold the electrical
harness and coolant hoses. Wiggle the whole box up out of there.
Disassemble on the bench to replace the filter. Wiggle back into
place, minding the position of both intake & output hoses as you do.
Easy once you've done it a few times.

This statement is correct in the context of the original discussion
and for other modern BMWs. But wheels for 2002, E21, and many older
models are not hubcentric. I mention that because '02 owners
sometimes fret unnecessarily over not being able to find centering
rings when fitting E30 wheels to their cars.

Nick,

My E39 came with two master keys and a valet key. I'm assuming your
nonfunctioning key isn't the valet key :)
Actually, if it wasn't originally a valet key, it may be now. I'll be
interested to hear from others if these keys are ever repairable, as I have
one master key that's nonfunctional as well. BMW does keep extras in Germany
(five of them if I remember correctly), which can be had for something like
$100-150. Once all the spares are gone you're sol -- re-keying is $$$.

Manuals for all current bmw models are available online in pdf format at
bmwusa.com -- owners circle. I think you only have to provide a vin to
register. If you have trouble logging on, let me know and I'll download and
send you the file.

>I just purchased a 98 528i. It came with two keys - the one key works
fine, opens the doors remotely etc., the other key will open the doors
manually and start the car but will not open doors etc., electrically. I am
lacking the owner's manual (on order) but have recharged the key by driving
with it in the ignition. Is there some way of re-activating this key - any
help is appreciated.
______________

I find myself in something of a similar position; I have a partial answer to
Nick's question but one of my own. I just bought a 2000 E-39 529iT sport
package for my wife to haul around the new baby and the dog. It came with
only one key, so I ordered a new one from the dealer (by the way, it's not
true that there are only a few ever made for your car; you can order as many
as you want). The key is cut to fit your car, via the VIN. The alarm code
is unique; the ***CAR*** must be programmed to learn the key.

The following worked to program my new spare key -- get in the car and close
the door. Insert key in ignition, turn it on, turn it off, take the key
out. Hold the key up, so the sensor can detect it, and push and hold the
LOCK button on the key. WHILE HOLDING IT DOWN, simultaneously press the
UNLOCK button THREE (3) times. The doors should lock and unlock. Voila.
NOTE: you need to do this with ALL YOUR KEYS at this time (or so I was
told). NOTE, though, I used this technique to reprogram a new key I ordered
for my 740iL at the same time, Nick, and so I may have it backword - you may
need to hold the unlock button down and press the lock button three times;
but it DOES WORK. Both my E-39 keys will lock/unlock the car.
============

HERE'S MY QUESTION.

The manual references some functions that can be programmed by the
dealership -- some are just programmable functions, others are keyed (no pun
intended) to the key itself, so that if you have two keys for two drivers,
the car can automatically adjust itself to each driver's preferences.

The manual is silent on exactly what functions are programmable; it suggests
that you consult with your dealership. Arggh.

>From what I've read in the manual, the "key memory" can be programmed to
run:
1. seat position
2. mirror position
3. steering wheel position

Does anyone know how to use this feature? And what other things can be
programmed???

Specifically:

how do I DISABLE the daytime running lights?
how do I DISABLE the automatic locking feature (the doors lock when we drive
off; have to manually unlock later)?
how do I DISABLE the automatic steering wheel "comfort ease/exit" feature?

Greetings all!

I just wanted to get some feed back on a good clay bar
kit. There is a Mothers "California Gold" kit at Pep

good results on a black car. If not, Can you
recommend a good clay kit?? Thanks!!

For all you wannabe racers out there, there's a fun opportunity to run in BMW
CCA Club Racing's Race School at Nelson Ledges the last weekend in July. I
think it's actually Friday and Saturday, while the chapter's drivers school
will run Saturday-Sunday. This is a great time with lots of wheel-to-wheel
lapping, practice starts (which are a blast) and a short race to conclude the
school. Lots of track time for the money and no point-bys! Contact Scott
Hughes at [EMAIL PROTECTED] for all the details.

It will work fine. They all work real good. Just clean
the car real good first (duh!) Then use plenty of
lube. (don't even go there) Turn and fold the clay
often. If you drop it you have to pitch it, so don't
drop it. If you run out of lube, any of the mist
- -and-shine spray will work too. You can do about 5-6
cars with one bar before it gets too contaminated to
use. you don't need a lot of pressure either. Just do
it until there is no dragging. Follow with a good
polish and wax.

Hi all,

I know Felix is right as I did just that (put E34 M5 wheels on a '97
E39)...successfully too...by paying a machine shop $50/wheel to machine the
center bore out. The offset was about, if not exactly, the same.

I believe these features are programmed via the diagnostic computer at the
dealership. The TIS has some information on programming those functions, as
well as one touch up/down windows and perhaps other stuff.

Subject: [uuc] Re: Air Filter Replacement

Sid, you have formatting issues, change the settings on your e-mail program.

Unplug the connector on the air flow meter (AFM). Use a screwdriver to
loosen the hose clamp that holds the AFM to the bellows (leading to the
throttle body). Pull the bellows back off of the AFM. Now wiggle the air
filter box/AFM assembly out. You'll see that the intake snorkel mates up
with the headlight back cover, which will give you a clue how to line it up
when you put it all back.

Once the filter box/AFM assembly is out of the car, THEN un-do the spring
clips. Note that there is a correct way and an incorrect way to install the
air filter. After you've done it a few times, it becomes second nature.
The thing I most often forget when re-assembling is the electrical connector
on the AFM.
